BIO: At just 19-years-old, New York City native rapper and actress, Imani Lewis, aka Mocha Bands, is already making waves across the media. She was recently crowned the winner of New York City’s “Mic Is Open” talent showcase, “Pancakes & Poetry,†and is excited to announce her new single/video, “Longevity.
A follow up to her debut, The Year of Mocha (August 2017), produced by Sonny Carson from S5Everything Studios, “Longevity†is the next step in Mocha Bands’ exciting past few years. After her “Faces In The Crowd†performance at SOB’s in NYC, a 15-year-old Mocha attracted a talent agent from Innovative Artists in NYC who immediately brought Mocha into the acting spotlight. In turn, she landed roles in acclaimed TV shows.
At age 13, Mocha displayed such a desire to become a rapper that she auditioned for the Apollo Theatre. She performed by herself and won over the crowd. She made a second appearance at the Apollo the following year, jumpstarting a loyal fan following. Known for her deep and hard hitting lyrics, she found herself fast out-performing adult competition. In the Summer of 2015 she won 2 showcases in the adult category at the Non-Stop Entertainment showcase, which was judged by highly respected alumni, such as Jayzzy Joyce, Styles P of The LOX, DJ Cocoa Channelle and Steph Lova.
Now, Mocha continues to pave her own way in the NY music scene, showing no signs of slowing down. The new single, “Longevity†is dedicated to the importance and hardship of longevity in the music industry. She cites Jay-Z as an important influence, who inspires her to “continue to push her pen,†to never forget the importance of what is said, and to capture the true essence of Hip-Hop.
Mocha Bands also stars in Netflix’s The Get Down as a Zulu Queen, and the hit series, “STAR,†on Fox, which was directed by Lee Daniels.
