Black Star Addresses ‘Palestinian Freedom’ On Stage and Backstage (Video)
During Black Star’s performance in Los Angeles on September 22nd, 2012, Talib Kweli and Yasiin Bey (formerly known as Mos Def) diverted from the original lyrics of “RE: DEFinition” and chose to rap in unison, “Let’s get free just like the Palestinians!” After the show, Yasiin spoke candidly (albeit carefully) about the significance of the lyric change and Black Star’s stance on justice and peace in Palestine; and elsewhere for all people.
We’ll leave further interpretations and implications for the lyric change to you, the reader. For reference, eLyrics and RapGenius both document the original lyric in “RE:Definition” going like:
Son I’m way past the minimum, it’s a verb millennium
My rap’s hold a gat to your back, like Palestinians
Very very sorry to hear that “Mos-Def” is also about this crap…. Maybe he eats all that false propaganda, my guess is, that he dosen’t know a thing about the palestinian-Israeli conflict. their are dozens of little details that will change his mind. MOS is out of my playlist for sure…
If you really care about human rights, why don’t you boycott Hamas? Hamas is a terrorist organization that kills its own people and uses them as human shields. Or perhaps you should boycott Syria where hundreds of thousands of people have been murdered in the past 2 years. Or, you could choose to boycott the USA and England for killing “innocent civilians” in Iraq and Afghanistan (which by the way, I don’t blame them for, because unfortunately civilians die when countries are at war with terrorists).
The hypocrisy….
