Welcome to VICELAND: A New TV Channel by VICE (Teaser)

Dear VICE fans,

Over the past several years we’ve been making tons (thousands) of videos and documentaries for you, devoted to the topics and the subjects that you find most important, weird, or just plain funny.

Today we are thrilled to announce our latest venture – VICELAND – a 24-hour cable channel featuring hundreds of hours of new programming. We’ve been shooting and cutting for months, and we can’t wait to share with you our vision of what television should look like. The new shows are awesome. When we started making them, collaborating with our friends in the extended VICE family, we really didn’t know how they would come together to create a TV channel. But when we saw what we had, we knew we were on to something really special.

Sports: Kristaps Porzingis Was Ready To Be ‘Booed’ But His Goal Was Always To Be Great (Video)

I wasn’t too sure about the Knicks draft pick, but in this first few games he’s proven to not be shook. Hoping to see more great things from this kid in the NBA. Word to “Godzingis.”

Kristaps Porzingis is a smash hit as a high-flying rookie for the New York Knicks. But it wasn’t too long ago that he was mercilessly booed by Knicks’ fans on draft night. We sit passenger side with Kristaps as he explains how he blocks out the negativity and the optimal methods for getting into your opponents head.

Stay Melo: Carmelo Anthony Goes To Rikers Island (Video)

Great stuff! VICE is keeping the heat on the prison industry by taking the cameras back inside. First President Obama does a special at a Federal prison; now Carmelo Anthony visits Rikers Island for this episode of “Stay Melo.” Impactful, especially for Melo, touring the jail facility and meeting a group of young prisoners. Growing up, he knew folks who’d done time and came back home. But being inside like this, even knowing he would eventually leave, was very different.

I’m not sure what I expected. I knew it wasn’t going to be pleasant. And, it wasn’t. At all. It was extremely disturbing.
Carmelo Anthony

Trying To ‘Stay Melo’ In New York: Speaking On The State Of The Knicks and The NY State Of Mind (Video)

“New York is the greatest city on the planet, I think. But you’re not a New Yorker if you don’t wake up some days and be like ‘man, f#ck this place.’”

Toto Melo, we’re not in Kansas Cuba Puerto Rico anymore. We’re back in the NYC for this ep; and we may as well get used to it…

In the third episode of Stay Melo we stick around New York City and hit Melo’s personal gym at Terminal 23 to see him get ready for the season with former teammate Iman Shumpert. Then we head to Red Hook, Brooklyn to track down Melo’s childhood home and visit the studio of street artist Swoon. Along the way Melo dishes on his relationship with New York and struggles with the media.

The Dangerous Rise of K2: America’s Cheapest High (Video)

K2 is a baaaad trip. Just watch this VICE News video on this whack marijuana substitute; comprised of plant matter sprayed with synthetic chemicals (designed to mimic the effects of marijuana’s active ingredient).

Weed is already lower-priced than most all illegal or controlled substances. However, VICE News reports (above) that K2 is currently America’s cheapest way to get high. The drug is often sold at corner stores, labeled as potpourri and unfit for human consumption. A bag of K2 sells for $5 to $10, while a joint goes for just $1.

The drug’s dangerous side effects have taken a toll on a wide variety of communities across the country, particularly in New York City. US poison control centers received more than 6,000 K2 calls in the first nine months of 2015, around a quarter of those calls came from NYC.

VICE News’ Nilo Tabrizy takes us to take a look a glimpse of the challenges New York City is facing with K2 through the lens of volunteer ambulance corps and harm reduction specialists in its outer boroughs.

Carmelo Anthony Goes To Puerto Rico, To ‘Stay Melo’ In The Hood To Do Some Good And More (Video)

New Stay Melo ep on VICE Sports for y’all. Last one was about Cuba. This time it’s Puerto Rico.

Carmelo Anthony recognizes, like most looking outside in, that Puerto Rico is currently in economic decline. But to Melo it’s a place of family, opportunity and a growing sports culture. He goes to chill (Melo out, if you will) but also to do some goodwill and good work. Spent a few days training with a group of fellow Knicks, seeing the stadium that will house his Puerto Rico FC NASL team, riding out to La Perla (one of Puerto Rico’s most notorious hoods), hanging out with reggaeton legend Tempo (home after a 12 year prison bid) at one of the b-ball courts Melo has refurbished for the community and more stuff.

Sure, ballers are in the League…balling. But with all that wealth, if you aren’t doing something…you got nothing! Just saying. Now, watch and listen as Melo does something; and shares and wrestles with his vision for what he’d like to accomplish in PR.

The Land of No Men: Inside Kenya’s Women-Only Village (Video)

Where the foothills of Mount Kenya merge into the desert, the people of Samburu have maintained a strict patriarchy for over 500 years in northern Kenya. That is, until 25 years ago, when Rebecca Lolosoli founded Umoja village as a safe haven for the region’s women. Umoja, which means “unity” in Swahili, is quite literally a no man’s land, and the matriarchal refuge is now home to the Samburu women who no longer want to suffer abuses, like genital mutilation and forced marriages, at the hands of men.

VICE Broadly’s Michelle De Swarte visited Umoja (and the villages it inspired to also start their own women-only societies) to meet with the women who were fed up with living in a violent patriarchy.

Carmelo Anthony Goes To Cuba To Cover Soccer, Soak In The Culture and Scoop Some Cigars (Video)

Very dope. And the time is right. Soccer (e.g. football, futbol) being the world sport it is, America being a leading sports nation, and Melo being a leading sportsman from America…

Throughout the NBA off-season VICE Sports and Carmelo Anthony are exploring street sport cultures around the world. In our premiere episode, Melo travels to Cuba to explore the rise of soccer in a nation synonymous with baseball, ride a 1950s drop top in the rain, and grab some fresh rolled Cuban cigars along the way.

Carmelo was a good choice for a correspondent, too. This VICE Sports piece felt more like interesting leisure than intense learning; enriching experience captured on video either way.

eSports Is Real, Really Big, And Serious Business Worldwide (Video)

Okay, so we thought we were talking big sporting with the earlier post on ‘Fantasy Football’ but DAMN…

Today, there are more people in the world who play the online multiplayer battle game League of Legends than there are people who live in France.
– VICE

Wowwww. More folks playing one game than the number of folks that live in a country! We have slept; but VICE is going to wake us up and hip us to the world of competitive gaming — also known as eSports. So real, and really exciting. Really lucrative, too… but really brutal at times.

Start with Part 1 above. Continue after the jump. A deep, multi-part story from VICE.

Cube couldn’t see ANYONE other than his son, O’Shea Jackson, Jr., play him in the new N.W.A. biopic, “Straight Outta Compton.” And Jr. came to realize that if he didn’t, he was risking another actor messing up his father’s story on the big screen. “The Grass Is Greener” (Documentary)

VICE sent another cute reporter (hey, just saying) to get another story traditional news media is simply not covering. Though the Marijuana Movement has had coverage, the travails of the business side, post-legalization, have not. Above is the story of an industry that continues to grow – in spite of limited bank backing for businesses, risks associated with having to do high-volume cash business (um…STRONG ARM ROBBERY on dat azz regularly), and very limited government support (dare we say opposition, as weed is still an illegal drug at the federal level).

BUT…

Still weed biz strives. Look, they’re having conventions and luring investors. Not to mention sending major tax revenue to the state of Colorado. Watch the report above.

Rashida Jones Talks About Her Documentary ‘Hot Girls Wanted’ (Video)

Let it be known then: Rashida Jones has NO problem with porn. Aaaand thank you and good night! Ha! But of course, there’s more to the story than that revelation if VICE is on the case. See above the sit down with Jones regarding the documentary she recently produced on Miami’s amateur porn industry entitled “Hot Girls Wanted.” Lots of insights on the up and down side of the industry; and society at-large influencing and being influenced by it.

Anybody saying they are not interested by now… is lying! Stop playing and press play.

Dominican Baseball Players (Video)

Interesting. Major League Baseball-affiliated programming that emphasizes literacy and a high school education for players; whether they get to play at a high level or not.

Over the last few decades, the Dominican Republic has changed the face of American baseball by churning out talented players whose humble beginnings have helped cultivate a unique passion for the game. That passion is often due to dire circumstances that drive all focus to the diamond instead of the classroom. The result is thousands of young Dominican men sacrificing their education and formative years for a 2% chance of making it to the big leagues.

We sent Jaimie Sanchez to Boca Chica, a small, rural town that is home to the MLB’s training camps to visit Junior Noboa. Junior is the head of Latin American Affairs for the Arizona Diamondbacks and has helped develop a digital education program for their young players. We also see Boca Chica through the eyes of two players who were forced to adjust to life back home after their dreams of major league glory never became a reality.

– VICE SPORTS

So, with a program that insists on some level of education, the theory is that would be players would have something to fall back on; even if the fall from potential glory is a hard one. VICE SPORTS with yet another compelling story-behind-the-story.

MIT Scientists Develop A Robotic Cheetah That Can Run & Jump (Video)

Robotics meet zoology at MIT: Scientists have nearly perfected designs for a robot cheetah.

Wait, wait! Doesn’t anybody over at MIT watch any sci-fi featuring enhanced robo-tech and/or animals? The Matrix, Planet Of The Apes…HELLO???!! So, cheetahs being high enough on the food chain to be sniffing our armpits, it’d be cool to make robo-cheetahs equipped with A.I. enabling them to run and jump without fatigue, right? No way, we’d have actual PREDATOR drones that could hunt and kill humans. Oh wait, we already do, huh?

Okay, so they’ll just come up with another name for the seek-and-eat cat-bots. Sigh. Talk about not knowing when to quit. Thanks for the sweet nightmares MIT… and VICE!
