Do You Know Mindfulness Coach George Mumford? Michael Jordan And Kobe Bryant Do (Video)

The best way to score is not to try to score… You form an intention and then you have to allow it to happen.
George Mumford

Not too far a stretch for two players coached by Phil Jackson to be into meditation. Jackson was known as ‘The Zen Master’ of course. However, this Daily VICE video is going to adjust the spotlight so it shines on the guy that really helped Air and The Heir Apparent to get their minds right, meditation guru George Mumford.

Watch Action Bronson Make the World’s Best Sandwich (Video)

Though he’s high out of his mind, fresh out the studio, Bronson is not touting this as a ‘stoner sandwich’… slathered with a lot of that classic f#cking ‘old Chevy oil sludge’ sauce (joking, but so is Bronson through most of this)!

Action Bronson stopped by the MUNCHIES Test Kitchen to show us how to make his version of a simple butcher’s sandwich. While a regular butcher’s sandwich usually consists of some meat on bread with very little garnish, this version is as over-the-top as the man showing you how to make it. First, we start with some good Italian bread, a juicy rib-eye, and some olive oil. The second realm of this beast consists of ricotta salata and Calabrian chiles, and as if that weren’t enough, a smear of grape must from the 1989 vintage of Paolo Bea Winery’s top red wine. Enjoy!
– Munchies

Best part, beyond the sammich itself, is Bronson busting that ricotta salata nut. Bwaaahahaaa!

‘Ride Along’ with NBA Icon & Former Philadelphia 76’er Julius ‘Dr J.’ Erving (Video)

Yooooo! Two of the hoop game’s greatest getting to the pawing, furious with the fisticuff stuff, on the floor back in the day. Different kind of b-ball Hall Of Fame moment to be certain!

We met up with Julius Erving at All-Star Weekend to discuss the ABA, his infamous fight with Larry Bird and the evolution of dunking from the free throw line.

Plus we get Dr. J speaking about ‘The Rucker.’ Good interview. All that and a pair of Converse. Philly!

Black Women’s Defense League (Video)

Something about that U.S. Army Oath Of Allegiance comes to mind: ‘support and defend… against all enemies foreign and domestic.’ The documentary above starts off getting right into the range of threats posed to the Black woman by a myria of factions, all the way down to Black men. In the tradition of the Black Panthers, and holding to their radical activist philosophical underpinnings in many ways, the Black Women’s Defense League (BWDL) is all about Black women fighting against the oppressor for each other.

VICE’s Wilbert L. Cooper meets the Black Women’s Defense League, a Dallas-based womanist organization notable for its pro-gun stance. As he follows them from their political education classes to their firearms training, he sees how they fight against White supremacy and patriarchal violence.

On ‘support and defend’… These sistas are definitely doing community education, empowerment and nutrition programs the Panthers intiated and implemented. But note the use of the word ‘many’ when it comes to what Pather traditions BWDL will support and defend… Founder Neicy X says that, unlike in the past, BWDL is NOT toeing the line for ‘the cause’ so far that it even compromises the liberty of women – like not standing against the abuse of their mates. No! ANY enemy, including an abusive husband/mate/relative, can catch a bad one!

Interesting viewpoints – about the right to self-defense, gun ownership (and the U.S.’s racist historical stance against Black ownership) and the inherent dangers, how some see women with guns as sexy (which BWDL does not mind, but stresses that the guns ‘are for USE’) and more – shared in this VICE short documentary.

How An 80s Arnold Schwarzenegger Film Predicted Our Future (Video)

First, it was NOT “Terminator”… That isn’t the film; not yet.

When Arnold Schwarzenegger sci-fi film The Running Man first premiered in 1987, it presented a dark vision of the US in the year 2017: economically depressed, ruled by the military, and obsessed with a reality TV show. It seemed far-fetched at the time, even to its creators. But on the eve of reality TV-star-turned President Donald Trump’s inauguration, it seems more timely and plausible than ever. Watch all the parallels between this retro sci-fi film and reality in our inaugural episode of Future Shock.
– VICE Motherboard

Good start for VICE’s newest Motherboard series: Future Shock. Somehow you always knew Schwarzenegger would figure into the future somehow. Actually, even more chilling than the idea of an unstoppable time-traveling murder-bot… that part in Sly Stallone’s “Demolition Man” where they talked about President Schwarzenegger (whew)!

Of course, we might come to wish for that. We’ll see…

J’ouvert: Brooklyn’s Dirty Masquerade (Documentary)

Yup. You probably know Carnival. You MIGHT know J’ouvert. Whether you do or don’t, here comes a VICE documentary on it… meaning we are about to get deep enough in depth about it so all who watch are in the know. Was kind of hoping the Carnival newbie Wilbert L. Cooper was gonna get a ‘real’ demonstration from Kat (or one of the other sistas) at the barber shop *wink*

J’ouvert is a wild, pre-dawn street masquerade that marks the beginning of Caribbean Carnival. It’s a tradition that represents rebellion and freedom from slavery for West Indian communities around the world. New York City’s J’ouvert is one of the most famous, bringing out more than 250,000 revelers every year who party through the night dressed in elaborate costumes or smothered in paint and powder.

While J’ouvert is a cultural cornerstone for the city, it’s become a subject of controversy. Over the past decade, more than 20 people have been shot and killed in and around the festival, leading many to associate the event with violence.

The World’s First Male Sex Doll (Video)

Ooookay. VICE’s Karley Sciortino is taking girls “playing with dolls” to a whole other level! Getting mighty cozy with the concept in this documentary episode exploring the making of male sex dolls for women.

Because, you know, gender equality.

(Hahaa! Karley, though. Got an undeniable sexy about her, right? Just saying, she probably does not need to go the doll route. Surely there is a real ‘plaything’ out here that will gladly play with her… Errr… Just watch.)

The Boyfriend Experience: In Japan, A Woman Can Even Rent A Man That Will Come Sit & Cry With Her (Video)

So the ‘Boyfriends For Hire’ business is still strong in Japan. We hipped y’all to it over three years ago on here. This is a next step. Sure, you can rent a boyfriend in Japan, but what about the elements expected of a longer-term bond? What if Japanese women could experience feelings usually borne of deeper bonds… without the being bound to a partner part? And do it a la carte? Would that be worth something?

Yeah, about $65 per hour. Yep, at least that’s what a ‘Handsome Weeping Boy’ will cost in Japan.

Watch.

(Full disclosure: VICE finds some cute correspondents. Like this Karley Sciortino. Them legs, too. Just saying.)

Jhenè Aiko Speaks On Love, Loss, Diversity And Family (Video)

Jhene

Artists should be open in some way that gets fans open about them; but some don’t open up a lot. Others go full Yeezy with the openness. Ha!

But Jhenè Aiko is sharing in this documentary at a level that falls comfortably within that range; even when talking about the ‘uncomfortable’ aspects of her life and career. Watch this engaging, albeit short, documentary feature on Jhenè.

Cuba’s Skate Culture (Trailer)

When you look at the parallels between cultures, you learn more about yours as well as theirs. Cuba’s burgeoning skate culture came about as the poor people there becoming practioners, doing their thing in the park, with other people there loving and nurturing something of their own right where it is happening, and the outside world recognizing its beauty and coming to partake. Sounds like Hip-Hop’s beginnings, right? Cuba skate culture is evolving in a way we recognize. Salute! They did not ‘invent’ skating per se, but this is their own flavor. Get a taste of Cuba’s skate scene with the trailer above from VICE SPORTS.

Cuba’s skate scene has no funding, very few resources and not much to speak of in terms of a skate park. But despite those obstacles scene is growing, thanks in part to organizations like Cuba Skate and the kids that want to see it furthered. We travelled with Ishod Wair, Lucien Clarke, Andrew Reynolds and special guest photographer Arto Saari to see the best skate spots that the country has to offer and take note of a vibrant underground skate scene on the verge of change.

The notorious hacktivist collective Anonymous has targeted everyone from PayPal to the FBI. But a string of arrests have crippled the group. So who is Anonymous now?

Hint: The story isn’t all as “Mr. Robot” (you know, the USA Network series) as you might think. At least not at first.

How To Survive A Zombie Apocalypse (Video)

Think AMC’s The Walking Dead is a joke, man?! It’s actually fiction; not a whole lot of funny. Many might say prospect of a zombie apocalypse is scary. And some of them would say… the threat of it is REAL… at least real enough to go to a training camp to learn the basic survival skills of living with all kinds of undead walking around.
