An Enslaved Family Worked A Plantation Almost 90 Years After The Civil War Ended (Documentary)
It’s one thing for post Civil War slaves to be freed on paper, to actually BE freed from slavery is a whole thing altogether. Consider the ‘lag time’ between that Emancipation Proclamation and the slaves coming to know that they can stop ‘slaving’ for no wages… that they can stop being mistreated, brutalized and/or otherwise denied basic human rights & dignity. Especially with no formal education, exposure to ‘outsiders’ (not even mass media or Internet). Think ‘Massuh’ went to them slaves right away to tell ’em, “Y’alls free now”? Hell no. But just how long were they still enslaved? VICE goes to ‘The Slavery Detective of the South’ to get her to tell the whole story.
Slavery might have ended on paper after the Civil War, but many White landowners did everything they could to exploit newly freed slaves well into the 20th century. Thousands of Black laborers across the South were forced to work against their will as late as the 1960s—a new form of enslavement that went on in the shadows of rural America.
VICE’s Akil Gibbons traveled to Louisiana to meet genealogist Antoinette Harrell, the “slavery detective of the South,” who tracks down cases of modern-day slavery and abusive labor practices. They talk to a man whose family was held on a plantation against their will into the 1950s, and explains how she uses decades-old records to uncover how slavery was perpetuated long after the Civil War ended.

Women Of Color Are Trying To Get Out Of The United States (Video)
Damn. Has it come to this? Our sistas go on retreats… women do, PEOPLE do… but the driver for WHY they are going in this piece. They need PEACE! And a SAFE space! A vacay trip is about ‘escape’ but this is an ESCAPE escape from the real harm they suffer.
It comes as no surprise that a time when White supremacist groups have gained increased public notoriety and the President has disparaged African nations as “sh!tholes,” many Black Americans are feeling isolated and unsafe in communities or workplaces.
Many of them are turning those frustrations into acts of self-preservation, and are spending significant money to get outside of the country and away from the people who make them feel that way.
Since the election of President Trump, at least 5 black-owned trip organizations have told VICE News that they’ve experienced upticks in interest from clients eager to get out of the United States.
VICE News followed a group of women to the Women of Color Healing Retreat in Puerto Viejo, Costa Rica; a travel experience that emphasized yoga, vegan food, political education seminars, and specifically banned White people.

The [Deep] Dish On Chicago Pizza (Video)
The Chi. Home of the deep dish pizza… inspired by Kate Upton… hahaaaa! But low-key understand the inspiration (well, not so low-key).
Chicago is not a one-note pizza city. From deep dish to tavern style thin, there are no hard and fast rules when it comes to pizza. Our host Frank Pinello has never been to Chicago but has an open pizza mind, even though he was raised on NY pizza. What makes this city so special is the people, hands down. So while we hate a lot of great pizza it was the people that really made our experience special. Whether Frank was learning about deep dish from Marc Malnati, making pizza with Rose at Vito & Nick’s or taking a dance lesson with the owner’s of Freddy’s pizza, one thing is clear in Chicago: this city has great pizza and even greater people.

Fold, Eat, Repeat: Experience New York A Slice At A Time (Video)
Nothing like a New York slice! And we got ’em (and the stories behind ’em) in this episode of The Pizza Show.
New York is the birthplace of many things, but for today’s purposes, we’re sticking to pizza. Frank starts with a quick history lesson from Scott Wiener, the owner of Scott’s Pizza Tours. Then, we hit the streets to see and taste the history for ourselves. The best thing about the city’s pizza scene is that it’s relatively young, so you can still eat slices from the ovens of the people that started it all and put New York pizza on the map.
We meet the granddaughters of the man that literally brought pizza over from Naples, and even see the ovens that he used. Then, we hit all the best slices from Greenwich Village to Soho, and finish in Brooklyn at Luigi’s Pizza, a place untouched by time.

Taking “The Pizza Show” On The Road… To Detroit (Video)
“Hey bruh, let’s get a slice” are words you have heard, or at least understand folks saying, in New York… and Chicago… and Detroit… and (record screeches, whimsical background music stops)… Wait what!!
Detroit might be known as the motor city, but it’s also the pizza city. Our host Frank Pinello heads west to try out the thick-crusted, rectangular pies unique to the city. We start our tour with the classics—Buddy’s, Cloverleaf, and Loui’s—before heading to some of Detroit’s newer spots like Amar Pizza and Suppino Pizzeria. And it wouldn’t be a trip to Detroit without a visit to one of the most infamous pizza names to come out of the Mitten State—Little Caesars. Motown is definitely the dough town.

VICE on HBO: Heroin Crisis & The New Age of Nukes (Video)
Two topics that are about ‘blowing up’ in their own ways. Truthfully always thought that the drug game was going the way of pills more so than that ‘ron… And “modernizing” our nukes, never really thought of that. But VICE did. Glad they are on the job.
America is facing the worst drug epidemic this country has ever seen: more people are dying from overdoses than from car accidents-and at the center of it is an explosion in the use of heroin. Thomas Morton traces the causes and impacts of the crisis, from the poppy farms of Mexico to the hills of West Virginia, and investigates how users, first responders, and government officials are responding to the new reality of American drug use.
Twenty-five years after the end of the Cold War, America’s vast nuclear arsenal is beginning to show its age, and the government has embarked on the largest nuclear modernization effort in our history, costing American taxpayers as much as $1 trillion. Kaj Larsen goes aboard a ballistic missile submarine and visits the facilities on the front line of our nuclear weapons program to see why the military wants to upgrade the nukes we have-and why that might be a dangerous idea.

The lens through which we observe events that affect us should be handled responsibly. The lens in this instance is journalistic reporting. There is stuff we ought to know. A free press should (read again: SHOULD) keep our eyes on what is important, tell us why, and provide proper focus long enough for us to make up our own minds about it. Extending the metaphor, the lens should be kept clear of clutter so we can see the TRUTH. That truth is left to each of us to find for ourselves.
On what’s going on in Charlottesville, VICE News does that. Like they always do: They go to the hot spot and embed, clear out the clutter and show us what it going on and why we should care; and viewers can go from there. Elle Reeve was there for VICE News to show us the raw truth, including what everyone said… including the U.S. President and White supremacist leader Chris Cantwell. Their words. Footage of actions and aftermath. Truthfully presented. Point blank period.
(You will likely feel enraged, sad, confused, helpless, or some combination. But if you feel anything like akin to Cantwell’s smirk at the end of this piece, LEAVE. And NEVER come back!

Government Mind Control: Is It Happening? (Video)
Damn. This looks straight out of a sci-fi TV series. The people suspect clandestine government activity and a coverup. Psychiatrists say it’s a mass delusion; so government will likely go with that. What’s the truth behind allegations of individuals being targeted and tortured in the most unique, high-tech ways? VICE Reports went to find out.
Recently, thousands of people around the world are claiming to be having the exact same terrifying experience. They all report the same symptoms: hearing operator voices in their heads, suffering from ‘electronic torture’ and being subject to organised stalking – they call themselves ‘Targeted Individuals.’
Whilst psychiatrists have warned this is mass delusion on a global scale, the community are determined to prove that they are not mentally ill, but victims of a global trans-humanist agenda that will eventually be rolled out to take control of us all.
Across online blogs and forums the targets have been sharing their experiences and in doing so have formed a growing community, validating each other’s place in the ‘targeting programme.’
Targeted Individuals have tried many things to relieve their pain – from living life on the run to surgically removing their own flesh because they believe it’s implanted with microchips.
In this film VICE follows the lives of several targets as they try to fight for official recognition of the targeting programme.
