Talib Kweli & Rapsody Chat About Her Influences And Relationships, Rap And Otherwise, At The “People’s Party” (Video)

You taught me the power of the microphone.

Very nice!

Nowadays, Rapsody is now a force on her own. Top-tier lyricist and artist, for certain. But it would be quite okay to judge her based on the company she keeps… because that is some POWERFUL company. Good get for the ‘cast, Kweli. I’m leaning in and listening!

In this episode of People’s Party, Talib Kweli and Jasmin Leigh sit down with rapper and writer Rapsody. This introspective interview highlights the huge contribution this talented lyricist has made in bringing the B-Girl back to the forefront of the culture. They discuss her growing up in the tiny town of Snowhill, NC; she speaks on being largely inspired to rap from growing up listening to MC Lyte and Lauryn Hill; and she shares the profound life advice she received from Ms. Hill. Rapsody also defines why being pro-Black doesn’t translate to being anti-White.

Later Rapsody reflects on her close friendships with Mac Miller and Nipsey Hussle, and the enormous loss the Hip-Hop community felt with their passing. She speaks on her regular collaborations with 9th Wonder and his Soul Council beat crew, then details every member’s signature style. She also digs into the guidance (and playful moments) she’s shared with Jay Z, and her friendships with Kendrick Lamar, DaBaby, and J.I.D.. Rapsody explains how the concept for the “Eve” album came about and responds to the notion that female fans only want to hear “songs for the ladies.” She also has wise words for the women in the game about being themselves regardless of any criticism they receive about their appearance or content.

Talib Kweli Speaks With John Forte On His Coming Up, The Fugees, His Cocaine Arrest, His Release, And Life Now (Video)

Man! What a great interview!!

Shout to Kweli’s people for the time indexing for this episode. I am a STAN for John Forte from waaaay back… like when I did not know his name… when he SNAPPED on the Fugees’ joint “Cowboy”… and we called him ‘The 7th Emcee’ because he never did not give his name at any point of giving us the most FIRE SHUTDOWN BARZ on one of the most FIRE songs… EVER #WhenPandemoniumStrikes

Buuuuut starting at 52:43 though…

John touches on “I, John” — the album he recorded at a time when he was aware of his pending prison sentence. He also speaks to his relationship with singer/song writer Carly Simon, who fought hard, advocating for his early release. Her efforts eventually proving to be successful, with an executive order of clemency from President Bush.

Yes. I wanna know how in the holey holy f**k did rapper John Forte get a President… President Bush… to let him out early??

Talib Kweli & Ice Cube Chat About Beefs, Big Hits, BIG3 Basketball, And John Witherspoon (Video)

When people go to the movies, they don’t wanna see what they just left.

Talib Kweli welcomes the ol’ West Coast Warlord, Ice Cube. Yeah… same dude that used to get it ‘Gangsta Gangsta’ style… that flipped to full-blown funny and almost family-friendly before we could look both ways. A lot to talk about to be certain.

On the 33rd episode of People’s Party, Talib Kweli and Jasmin Leigh sit down with rapper, actor, producer, director, writer, sports league founder, and all-around legend among legends: Ice Cube. The conversation covers a multitude of subjects and starts at the beginning — with the story of Cube growing up with aspirations of playing pro-football before transitioning into one of the most respected, prolific lyricists of all-time. The trio discusses the origins of Ice Cube classics like “Boyz-n-the-Hood” and “It Was A Good Day,” the booming growth of the BIG3 basketball league, and emcees who had the most impact on Cube coming up and the development of his pen-game.

Later in the episode, Cube is asked if there is such a thing as a good cop, and they discuss police force gang mentality and bullying within the department to escape accountability. Cube also sums up why so much of America loves Trump, how he balances family-friendly entertainment while still maintaining his gangsta-rap persona, and stories surrounding the making of “Janky Promoters,” and the Friday franchise. They also discuss how Cube’s group Westside Connection was formed as a response to some of the East Coast backlash to West Coast rap dominance of the airwaves at the time, and reflect on how he feels about beefs of the past with Common and B-Real of Cypress Hill.

Neal Brennan On His Relationship With Dave Chappelle & What Happened With Chappelle Show (Video)

Hmm… now I gotta find that ep of Joe Rogan’s podcast with Neal Brennan as a guest. Was Joe, in fact, being ‘dickish’ to Neal regarding Dave Chappelle? Well… this clip covers all that and then some. Good stuff!

In this clip from People’s Party, Neal Brennan details aspects of “Chappelle’s Show” end and the falling out around it, as well as his working relationship with Dave Chappelle, then and now. Neal also expands on what it’s like to be a White comedian who does material for black audiences and how he and Dave’s roles would get stereotyped by comedians and studios due to race.
