The Soulquarians were born at the Electric Lady Studios. Questlove and D’Angelo loving to make music with sickness in it. Common & Erykah Badu came in and got down with the sickness. The fam kept growing… and the brothers James (Poyser and Yancey) rounded out the core… but the story certainly doesn’t stop there…

In 1998, the Neo-Soul movement was near its peak when a collective of like-minded artists came together to push the wave even higher. They called themselves the Soulquarians, and before the decade ended they’d help birth some of the modern era’s greatest recordings.

Classic Clips: Questlove Captures Recording Session With J Dilla, Common, & The Soulquarians (Video)

Check out this classic clip that Questlove of the legendary Roots crew unearthed recently in honor of J Dilla.  It’s behind the scenes footage of the recording process for one of Common’s most talked about albums ‘Like Water For Chocolate.’ Crafting the soundscape for the project was J Dilla, James Poyser, & the rest of the Soulquarians who were recording it at the time. The Roots & Common were midway recording followup albums to their breakthrough Things Fall Apart & Like Water For Chocolate projects. two unapologetic “Neo Soul” joints. Having formed an unofficial collation sometime in 96, using the Native Tongue blueprint. The Soulquarians were born.
