Many new artists are still in search of a record deal with a major label instead of trying to maintain some type of independence with their art, but what many of them fail to realize is that almost all deals with major labels are “360” deals. For those of you who in the dark it simply means that the label gets a piece of everything you do from album sales, touring, & damn near everything else. In this particular interview Phonte gave his opinion on these contractual agreements that have now become the industry standard with the majors. Phonte is releasing his first solo album “Charity Starts At Home” on September 27th & with everything he’s said in this interview it’s not surprising that he’s dropping the album on his own Foreign Exchange Music label. 9th Wonder let loose the first single plus a few other remixed gems from his upcoming album The Wonder Year that’s due to drop September 27th. Band Practice Part 1 features his former Little Brother bandmate & Foreign Exchange frontman Phonte alonside their homie DJ Flash while “Band Practice Part 2” features their long lost NC homie Median. Many people may not be aware that Median was supposed to be the original third member of what later became the group Little Brother before Rapper Big Pooh stepped in. 9th Wonder “the producer” transforms into 9thmatic “the emcee” on the bonus remix of his ‘Make It Big’ single that dropped earlier in the year featuring his fellow Winston-Salem patna Big Remo. Trackademicks – “Halfway” feat. Phonte & Carlitta Durand

The Bay area producer who coined the term “Champagne Soul”, Trackademicks, links up with two North Carolina artists that we respect when it comes to new soul music in Phonte & Carlitta Durand. In addition to his recent work with the aforementioned Foreign Exchange frontman, Trackademicks has produced an assortment of great work from artists such as J. Davey, Kid Cudi, Teedra Moses, & too many others to name. Feels like it’s a matter of time before an artistic cat like him explodes with the recognition to match his musical talent. Trackademicks let loose this new joint “Halfway” as a teaser to his upcoming album The Champagne Room due later this year.

Median – The Sender (Artwork & Tracklist)

Median is a very dope MC from NC who after a hiatus is back with longtime friends Phonte and 9th Wonder to bring a new project to the people. The album drops August 16th. I was hoping to see more Foreign Exchange production credits but I’m sure The Soul Council will provide some dope beats along with folks like Kev Brown and S1, it should be a dope album which drops under the Foreign Exchange imprint.

They never should have gave you nikkaz studio equipment! Hahaaa! This song is hilarious with all the ‘Swag Swag Swag Lil B type’ ad-libs going on, but on a serious level this smoothed out remake of the Mark Morrison original song ‘Return Of The Mack’ sounds pretty good. He when they seem like they are just playing with the music it still sounds good.

Phonte Releasing Debut Solo Album With 9th Wonder Serving As One Of The Key Producers

The folks over at The Urban Daily caught up with Phonte & 9th Wonder for an interview & they delivered some great news that many fans had been anticipating. Not only have the two reconciled their differences, but Phonte says that 9th Wonder will be contributing the majority of the tracks for the album as he’ll be responsible for the albums overall direction in terms of the sound. Phonte says he randomly chose September 13th as the release date for his solo project which coincidentally was the release date of the Minstrel Show which was the last Little Brother album the released together six years ago. Check out the interview HERE
