The Story Behind Little Brother’s Debut Album, “The Listening” (Documentary)
When you hear them together, it sounds right…
This is how dope documentaries get done! Okay, so at 11 minutes it’s more like a mini-doc… but just right. Frame the story as a ‘making of’ but drop all kinds of gems and jewels of history (group and Hip-Hop) along the way.
Started in a college dorm room by a group of North Carolina Central students in 2001, the Justus League collective and offshoot trio Little Brother defined the sound of Durham Hip-Hop for years to come, constructing a style altogether distinct from everything to the north and south. This level of innovation turned heads with some of Hip-Hop’s biggest names, and the members of Little Brother (9th Wonder, Big Pooh and Phonte) have gone on to work with superstars like Kanye West, Kendrick Lamar, Drake, Jay-Z, Dr. Dre and Questlove, who appears in the documentary.

Rapper Big Pooh – “Seinfeld” (Go Up) feat. Phonte (Prod. By Swiff D)

Robert Glasper – “Violets” feat. Phonte (Prod. By 9th Wonder)
Robert Glasper delivers the loveliest “Violets” (produced by 9th Wonder); off his tribute album released in commemoration of the late great Miles Davis’ upcoming birthday.
The album blends a diverse group of master takes and outtakes from across Miles’ incredible tenure with Columbia Records (1955-1985) with original reinterpretations of songs by Davis. From the obvious (riffs and passages within the catalog) to the obscure (samples of Miles’ in-studio instructions spoken after false starts), Glasper has built something unique but still unquestionably Miles.
The drop date for “Everything’s Beautiful” is May 27, 2016. But you can pre-order that today… after you listen to Tiggalo flow over this Wonder–Glasper musical collabo.
Torae – “Clap Sh*t Up” feat. Phonte (Prod. By Nottz) [Video]

Torae returns with the 3rd video “Clap Sh*t Up” from his sophomore album ‘Entitled.’ Produced by Nottz and featuring an appearance from Phonte (Little Brother/Foreign Exchange) “Clap Sh*t Up” is modern-day Hip-Hop at its finest. The video directed by Pixel Motiv Media was shot in Torae’s home turf of Coney Island is bolstered by animated frames over live action.
“Entitled” is linked below.
