For The NYC Title, Brooklyn Tech’s Team Will Step In The Arena (Documentary)
If you cannot wrap your head around ‘step team’ as a sports/athletic activity, look at this and reconsider. Just saying. They go in as hard as any team on the court (or anywhere else).
You won’t find the most successful team at Brooklyn Technical High School on the basketball court or on the football field. You’ll find them stepping in the cafeteria – sweating, laughing and striving to keep their crown as NYC’s regional champions. In this VICE Sports exclusive, we met up with the all-female Lady Dragons step team to see their pressure-packed final days of preparation for NYC regionals.

Classically Beautiful: The Discussion (Docu-Series)
Visuals for this “Classically Beautiful” series begins with the NYC discussion and continues after the jump, taking the discussion to New Jersey. Each discussion clip relates multiple perspectives from women who are learning to fully embrace who they are and what they represent.
To the core, this piece is a representation of how we manifest our truths and convictions, how we identify ourselves in the face of adversity, and the power of dialogue. Dialogue so powerful that it can influence, encourage, and inspire us to exist with purpose, or fire. The way that you communicate and the things that are communicated to you will shape and build you for the rest of your life.

Stay Melo: Carmelo Anthony Goes To Rikers Island (Video)
Great stuff! VICE is keeping the heat on the prison industry by taking the cameras back inside. First President Obama does a special at a Federal prison; now Carmelo Anthony visits Rikers Island for this episode of “Stay Melo.” Impactful, especially for Melo, touring the jail facility and meeting a group of young prisoners. Growing up, he knew folks who’d done time and came back home. But being inside like this, even knowing he would eventually leave, was very different.
I’m not sure what I expected. I knew it wasn’t going to be pleasant. And, it wasn’t. At all. It was extremely disturbing.

The L.O.X. – “New York City”

Jam Master Jay’s son ‘TJ Mizell’ Spins On NYC’s ‘J’ Train (Video)
Among the things that might fill your heart with joy on a cold morning. Think of hopping the train on a typical NYC day… getting into the rail car that just so happens to be being rocked by TJ Mizell, son of the legendary Jason “Jam Master Jay” Mizell (of Run DMC fame). Yooo! TJ does a run of Jigga joints – including a Trap remix of “Tom Ford” (Benzi Remix) and “Show Me What You Got” (DJ Green Lantern Remix).
Keeping it old school, the man powers his equipment using a car battery (sorry, no streetlamp poles on the train)! Great vid.

Comedy: The Daily Show’s Take On NYC’s ‘Stop & Frisk’ Issue (Video)
Who said hot women aren’t funny? Well, don’t say that anymore. Jessica Williams is hot… and hilarious in her skit on Comedy Central’s The Daily Show. The Show is currently being anchored by John Oliver while regular host Jon Stewart is on break working on his movie. This ‘Frisky Business’ segment comes to us from ‘Wall Street’ (aka ‘Business Harlem’), as Jessica gives hardline on-site commentary about the need for MORE stop-and-frisk in this crime-ridden area. Boom!
B.O.B. vs. Hot 97 NYC (Video)
I’ve been in radio for 20 years & have interviewed many artists who have stopped by my radio show but most of the time when those artists get larger they never come back or send a thank you unless their careers are falling off & they are trying to reconnect with their original fans & supporters.
I never felt like B.O.B. was only reaching for a pop audience but I can understand 1000% what HOT 97’s program director Ebro is talking about because it happens all the time to me on the radio station I’m on.
Doin’ It In The Park: Pick-Up Basketball, NYC (Movie Trailer)
There’s only one question in the street game (e.g. pick-up basketball): Who got next? Well, in the indie film game it’s Bobbito and Kevin. and their movie “Doin’ It In The Park: Pick-Up Basketball, NYC.”
‘“Doin’ It In The Park: Pick-Up Basketball, NYC” is an independent documentary directed by Bobbito Garcia and Kevin Couliau. The film explores the definition, history, culture, and social impact of New York’s outdoor summer b-ball scene, the worldwide “Mecca†of the sport. In New York City, pick-up basketball is not just a sport. It is a way of life. There are 700+ outdoor courts, and an estimated 500,000 players, the most loyal of which approach the game as a religion, and the playground as their church.’

The Real Wu-Tang: New York’s Shaolin Warrior Monk (Video)
(Video Courtesy: The Atlantic)
Shi Yan Ming has been in some action movies; but he is more colorful (and astonishing) in real life. At age five, he began training in the ancient Shaolin Temple in China’s Henan Province. He defected to the States in 1992, eventually founding USA Shaolin Temple in NYC, where he teaches philosophy and martial arts to kids and celebrities alike. What’s more, when interviewed for a documentary series (New Yorkers), the directors discovered a Wu Tang symbol in his studio… yeah, that Wu Tang symbol… as Yan Ming has RZA as one of his students. Check out the brief video expo on Yan Ming above.
