Marcus Garvey Inspired MLK & Mandela; Today His Son Is Asking President Obama To Pardon Him (Video)
“Today we look at another request for a presidential pardon, this one from the family of Marcus Garvey, a pioneering figure in the Black Freedom struggle in the early 20th century who inspired generations of civil rights activists around the world. In the 1920s, FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover targeted Garvey for his political activity as a leader of the Pan-African movement. Garvey was convicted in 1923 on a charge of mail fraud and sentenced to five years in jail. His charges and conviction effectively ended Garvey’s political movement and eventually led to his deportation back to Jamaica. We speak to Marcus Garvey’s son, Dr. Julius Garvey, who is leading the Justice4Garvey effort.”

Rakim – “Madiba” (Tribute To Nelson Mandela)
Yoooo! Respect to the G.O.D.M.C. for putting this down with respect for “Madiba” – in honor of the late human rights icon Nelson Mandela. Plenty of coverage and tributes for Mandela. But none like this Rakim joint telling the man’s “Long Road to Freedom” story (gotta check that Idris Elba movie out, too, by the way). Take a listen.
Mandela Tribute In South African Department Store (Video)
Soul-stirring performance in tribute to the late Nelson Mandela… in South Africa… in a Woolworths produce section. Unexpected? Definitely! Will you LOVE it? DEFINITELY! Watch.
On Saturday, 7 December 2013, Woolworths had planned a performance at our Parkview store in Pretoria to support our Operation Smile Christmas campaign. The Soweto Gospel Choir’s planned a rendition of James Brown’s I Feel Good. But, after Madiba’s passing the choir decided on a tribute instead. They chose Johnny Clegg’s Asimbonanga.

Jean Grae Speaks On The Importance Of Nelson Mandela (Video)
Reminiscent and reflective, Capetown (South Africa) born emcee Jean Grae aka ‘Your Friendly Neighborhood Superhero’ urges anyone who does not know something about the late great Nelson Mandela to look him up online, learn something, and share what was learned. Mandela was too important to her South African heritage… too important to the world to do any less. Hear what Grae has to say in the Revolt TV clip above.
Stalley – “Raise Your Weapons” (Video)
Stalley repping the MMG with a brand new video for “Raise Your Weapons” off of his mixtape “Honest Cowboy.” Motivational video honoring Nelson Mandela within days of his passing. You can get the single and/or the mixtape via links to earlier posts below.
Thank You Nelson Mandela (Video)
Former prisoner. Former President. Forever to be respected, admired, loved…Â now mourned by nations the world over. Pass now from us into eternity, Nelson Mandela. Quite literally, a man who was no myth; but who will remain a legend who lived a life of service to humanity died at his home yesterday. He was 95.
We don’t have the perfect words, Mr. President. But we sincerely offer the two that should certainly be heard forever in association with your name: Thank You! For your struggles, protests, imprisonment, iconification… for your work and triumphs freeing yourself and your people (of every color) from the bonds of man, from the oppression racist institutions, and the entanglements of in-fighting that kept us at war with ourselves… We say THANK YOU, President Mandela.
To be certain, the struggles continue. But it is now our turn to take up the causes we see fit and see them through to the end; to our own ends if necessary. And we cannot say we have not had folks to have shown us the way in our lifetime. Chief among them, Nelson Mandela showed us the way of the warrior suited for his lifelong battle against injustice and for peace on a national/global scale: Not perfect, but not waiting for someone or some perfect time to come along. Not looking for a fight, but willing to risk it all and fight with all he has for as long as he has. And as a result, though not seeking glory as an end, glory followed him to the end and will forevermore.
Rest in peace, Brother Mandela. We got it from here.
Video comments from U.S. President Barack Obama above. After the jump, a favorite clip of mine.
