Common – “Black America Again” feat. Stevie Wonder (Prod. Karriem Riggins x Robert Glasper) [Video]

Music video for “Black America Again” – the title track of Common’s album. Produced by Karriem Riggins and Robert Glasper. Featuring Stevie Wonder. With Esperanza Spalding on bass. With Scratches by J Rock. With Patrick Warren on strings. With ad libs by Chuck D and MC Lyte.

With the most unpalatable dose of truths delivered in a Hip-Hop suspension. Damn. Just as the start of the video forces us to relive the killing of Alton Sterling and opens the wound, Common drops in a cauterizing truth… that we have to stop killing each other, too. THEN through more lyricism, audio samples from Black noteworthies, and that driving beat, Common continues the uncomfortable conversation and intervention.

Moving. Powerful. Like Hip-Hop is supposed to be. A Golden Era vet utilizing rap as the voice of the culture it was meant to be. Here’s the emotional lineup: You will start with your eyes on the screen, then they will water, you’ll raise a hand to wipe them away, ball it into a fist as the hand lowers, nod in agreement with the music AND message, then RAISE YOUR FIST at the end.

Revolutions On Air: The Golden Era of New York Radio 1980 – 1988 (Documentary)

Get someone to share what they knew about New York City radio during the 1980s, and you are sure to hear mix show legends and DJs like Marley Marl and Kool DJ Red Alert. Yep, there’s that and so much more. But what if someone went and culled content from all the stories into one insightful narratives.

Well, Revolutions On Air is the story of Marley and Red, and the likes of Shep Pettibone, Tony Humphries, The Latin Rascals… innovators of the day that pushed emerging Hip-Hop, electro, house music and scenes. Radio listeners all over the city recorded what would become classic mixes via tape decks hooked into personal stereos. That’s the um… downloading… folks used to do back in the day, kids.

Check out Revolutions On Air, narrated by MC Lyte.

MC Lyte – “Jordan Effect” (Produced By Erick Sermon)

lyte_0One of my favorite female emcees of all-time, MC Lyte, gets busy over some tight production from Erick Sermon for this ‘Jordan Effect’ banger. Just like the Big Daddy Kane & DJ Premier joint “XX8 Bars Of Kane” we posted days earlier, this is just another custom crafted banger released for the upcoming Jordan Brand “XX8 Days Of Flight” compilation celebrating the 28th edition of the sneaker Michael Jordan made famous.  The full project drops in February 15th during the NBA Allstar weekend in Houston.
