NPR’s Tiny Desk Concert Series Presents: Tuxedo (Video)
A Tuxedo Tiny Desk Concert? Best ticket you didn’t even have to purchase. Check it out!
When Tuxedo arrived at NPR and Mayer Hawthorne spied a small ‘Ho!’ button sitting on Bob Boilen’s desk, he immediately beamed. “We use a big ‘Ho!’ button on tour,” he said. They didn’t bring a drummer, opting for a boombox — yes, a real boombox playing a real cassette tape, kids — and it was nostalgic delight from the start of the cassette’s hiss. The band was tight as ever, while their ace in the hole, Gavin Turek provided dance moves and the sweetest harmonies. Tuxedo set things off with a fan favorite from their first album, along with two [more] before closing it out with a red light special. It’s one thing to go against the grain for the sake of it — and another completely make it good. In this Tiny Desk concert, Tuxedo accomplished both.

Rhythm Roulette With Tuxedo (Jake One x Mayer Hawthorne) [Video]
Hawthorne’s of blue-eyed soul vibes and Jake One’s hit-laden list of production creds are brought to bear on the blindfolded beat-making challenge.
Jake One and Mayer Hawthorne form like Voltron to become production duo Tuxedo, the latest contestants on MASS APPEAL’s Rhythm Roulette. The pair stopped by Good Records – the shop, not the label – on East 5th Street in NYC, tied bandanas over their eyes, and grabbed up three random records to sample.

Tuxedo – “U Like It”
We’ve posted on Tuxedo (Jake One and Mayer Hawthorne). Heard this song a while back recently. And it popped back in my head. Struggled all weekend trying to remember what it was called and where I heard it.
Once I got my ‘memory back’ I went on a brief Tuxedo binge. So, yeah. Expect the fruits of that this week. Gonna be all good though. Admit it: “U Like It.”

Mayer Hawthorne – ‘Impressions’ (EP)
The kid from Michigan recently dropped this 6 song EP of cover joints for free download. I like the fact that he chose to cover most of the lesser known works of the artists he’s tapped in this project for inspiration. Check out the website for more information on his thought process in completing this EP. I’m still rocking to some of Mayer Hawthorne’s previously released material like his No Strings Roller Boogie Remix produced by the legendary DJ Jazzy Jeff. I’ve included both projects below for download….
