Thirty Years Later: DJ Red Alert Gives Us The Real Story Behind “The Bridge is Over” (Video)
Nowadays we get beef in the form of Remy Ma getting at Nicki Minaj. But heads know… The Bronx and Queens has ben going at it over the decades. Let’s listen and watch at DJ Red Alert, who was there for it all, tell us about some foundational Hip-Hop battle history: The Bridge Wars of the late 1980s, KRS-ONE and Boogie Down Productions vs. on Marley Marl and the Juice Crew.
(As an important aside, pay attention to what Red says about a DJ’s duty to our music and culture. Great stuff! “The Bridge Is Over”… but Hip-Hop don’t stop… can’t stop!)
KRS-ONE Gives His Views On 9-11, Hip-Hop’s Great Ones and More (Video)
Whether they agree with him or not, most would agree that the ‘Kris’ (KRS-ONE) articulates his positions on even the most controversial topics plainly…when given the chance. Surfing the ‘Tube (YouTube), I found this Vlad-TV clip (above) in which KRS-ONE clarifies comments he made soon after 9/11 to The New Yorker magazine that were were taken out of context. KRS-ONE also talks about today’s Hip-Hop, battles, and his respect for the rap greats.
Marley Marl Classic Recipes: Recreates LL Cool J’s ‘Mama Said Knock You Out’ With Unreleased Verse (Video)
“In the first installment of Marley Marl ‘Classic Recipes,’ he shows you how he produced the beat for the 1991 Grammy award-winning chart-topping single “Mama Said Knock You Out” by LL Cool J. He discusses the collaboration and the production process of the track, as well as methods and tools that were used, including the Akai MPC60 and E-Mu SP-1200, the preferred sampler and drum machine for most hip hop producers at that time. In this video Marley Marl loads the samples into his new production weapons of choice, Ableton Live and the Akai APC40, including bits of Sly And The Family Stone’s “Trip To Your Heart” and James Brown’s “Funky Drummer”.
Throughout the video, the DJ legend gives invaluable advice and tips for young and up and coming producers, and he concludes the episode by offering a mixing technique for Ableton Live users and lovers of 808 kicks and other bass-heavy kick drums, and an alternate rock version of the song with never before heard lyrics recorded by LL in 1990.” – Dubspot

Rap, Marley Marl & others. Just imagine….in a parallel universe Gza is making an appearance in the classic ‘Symphony’ video……
