The J Dilla Foundation, spearheaded by his mother Maureen “Ma Dukes” Yancey, made the trip across the pond to London recently for a special event that raised over $17,000 for the organization & for Lupus UK. Many DJs rocked the London crowd with classic joints crafted by J Dilla through the evening & Detroit’s own Phat Kat even performed while Ma Dukes danced with the crowd as well. In 2005, Common released his sixth studio album, and second gold record, Be. In describing the album’s concept shortly after its release, he said, “I named it Be to be who you are, man, and be able to be in the moment and not try too hard. Be is another way of saying just do without trying hard, like I said, natural and be true to the core of who you are; and this album, I wanted to just be and not just go and exist as just an artist, not worried about the past.”

Jay Electronica doing the smart move of reintroducing fans to visuals of songs that have been released already & breathing new life into them with brand new videos. This video is kinda ill too! The video was shot in Kathmandu Nepal in the fall of 2009. This chess strategy makes sense to me for an artist like Jay Electronica who’s obviously the most anticipated artist to release a brand new album. Whether consciously planned or unplanned, its a winning strategy in my opinion of continuing to perfect the first official album while giving the fans new looks on previously released material.
