RIP to Keith Elam aka GURU. And respek on the name Avrex and on the names of the Gangstarr Foundation fellows that stepped up to make this tribute happen. One time for the late great. Salute!
Avrex features his Gangstarr affiliates founding members Guru and Big Shug on a classic remix. He also gets help from his cousin KrumbSnatcha in this tribute to the late great Guru.The video has unreleased person family photos never seen before by the public until now! Avrex puts the track listing from the classic Gangstarr album “Moment of Truth” in his entire verse. This is a clever and witty way to pay homage to the legendary group Gangstarr. The intro consists of a shoutout from Guru’s nephew Justin Ruffin Elam. Production credits from Gambit Ent. (Germany). The song will be featured on Avrex’s upcoming album “Growth” set to release this spring.

Lord Finesse Speaks On What Made Gang Starr (DJ Premier x GURU) Special [Video]

If anyone can speak on this, Lord Finesse can. Saying Preemo is a SUPER-producer… all while repping DITC (with its cabal of dope producers)… yeah, that’s a powerful recommendation. And stressing that GURU (RIP) had that monotone style that NO ONE could come close to imitating. Yeah, Finesse is spot on!

This track, “G.U.R.U.†featuring Talib Kweli and Guru’s Gang Starr partner DJ Premier is dedicated to Guru’s memory; a celebration of his life, legacy and all of the vast accomplishments and great music Guru and DJ Premier gave us. “G.U.R.U.†is also the lead-single from Marco Polo’s forthcoming album – “PA2: The Director’s Cut” (due out July 2013).

Flashback 1990: The Gangstarr Video Press Kit (Video)

1990 was my first first year in radio when I was doing a hip hop show called ‘Strictly Hip Hop’ in Pennsylvania. I had also started a cable access show of the same name later that year & it wasn’t uncommon to receive dozens of new records & videos in the mail every week. Back then most of the videos we would receive from the record labels & indie promoters would arrive in the form of 3/4 inch tapes or on VHS. I need to get on my job like Tampa Bay area DJ Sandman who digitized one of Gangstarr’s old video press kits from back in the day. I know I have this same video on VHS somewhere in storage. I’m literally kicking myself to get on it because I do need to take the time to digitize many of my old shows & interviews from the 90s. In the meantime check out the video of GURU & DJ Premier’s video press kit. Rest in peace GURU! On another note….I’m definitely feeling how DJ Premier is rocking my favorite NFL team’s baseball cap. #RAIDERNATION BABY!

DJ Premier speaks on his album with Nas that’s still in the works, working with Slick Rick for the first time ever for the song “Need Some Bad”, & reflects on his Gangstarr partner Guru’s life & legacy. Hardknock TV does some great interviews, but I was surprised that the interviewer was unaware that DJ Premier has worked with Rakim before. Maybe he was wondering about DJ Premier’s absence from Rakim’s Seventh Seal album…
