Slum Village – “Yes Yes”
J Dilla would have been 40 years old today February 7th. As people around the world celebrate the greatness of the Detroit producer & emcee James Yancey aka Jay Dee aka J Dilla, his brother Illa J & the remaining members of Slum Village (T3 & Young RJ), let loose this joint appropriately titled ‘Yes Yes’. ‘Yes Yes’ is fitting as fans are happy to know Slum Village has a new album coming featuring more J Dilla production from the period when he was going by the name Jay Dee. Black Milk & Young RJ are also expected to provide some musical soundscapes as well. Rest in Peace J Dilla Dawg!
Black Milk – “Cold Day”
It’s so cold in the ‘D’ but Detroit producer & emcee Black Milk is hitting us with some sure fire heat for the winter. It was just a few months ago when Black Milk released his “No Poison, No Paradise” project and now he’s already gearing up to drop a new project called “Glitches In The Break” due May 4th. “Cold Day” is the first official single from the forthcoming ‘Glitches In The Break’ EP that will be released digitally on March 4 followed by a 12″ vinyl format on Record Store Day, April 19. Digital pre-order is available now via the Detroit musician’s Bandcamp page.

Elzhi Speaks On Being Influenced By Ice Cube, Meeting Eminem & Proof, & The Detroit Hip Hop Scene (Video)
One of my favorite emcees coming out of Detroit was interviewed by the good people over at Hard Knock TV. In this in-depth two part interview interview Elzhi talks about how Ice Cube was the first rapper to make him want to rap after referencing classics like “America’s Most Wanted”, “Kill At Will” & “Death Certificate”. Elzhi also speaks about being a student of the game having studied emcees like Lord Finesse & Rakim before getting detailed about the early Detroit hip hop scene where he first met Proof & Eminem. Check out part two on friday under the hood….

Black Milk – Demo Beats 2012
Detroit producer & emcee Black Milk took to his soundcloud page to release some of the beats he’s cooked up for 2012 for his fans’ audio consumption. It’s about time we heard something from Black Milk who seemed to be rather quiet for most of the year. I’m still hoping he drops an official song & video for that ‘Don Cornelius’ joint he teased us with a while back. After listening sitting here listening to these instrumental demo joints, the track that catches my attention the most occurs around the 2:50 mark. That’s that gritty Detroit hip hop most of us fiend for. Black Milk has to stop disappearing like this. I’d like to see Black Milk put out more videos from past albums while in between projects to hold fans over until the new stuff is done. Until he does I guess these demo instrumentals should suffice for how.
Clear Soul Forces: Sound & Vision (Documentary)
The Detroit homies Clear Soul Forces have been tapped by Red Bull Soundstage for a mini-documentary on their come up in this hip hop game! This is a dope documentary on the ‘fantastic four’ from the motor city….
New Music: Clear Soul Forces – “Detroit Revolution(s)” (Album)
Things happen so fast on the internet & with artists releasing music that I almost forgot to post this joint up from the Detroit homies Clear Soul Forces. After they dropped the video for “Get No Better” produced by Kankick back in January we were patiently waiting for the full length. With everyone focused on SXSW going on this week I’m glad we didn’t wait too long to get this up for all those real hip hop fans out there. If you haven’t peeped it yet you can listen to it below & make that move with the download.
Guilty Simpson – “Getting Riches” (Video)
Detroit emcee & 1/3 of the Random Axe crew, Guilty Simpson reaches back for one of his older joints & releases a new video for “Getting B*tches” off of his 2008 “Ode To The Ghetto” album. The clean version of this song was “Getting Riches” with Detroit producer Denaun Porter on the hook, but the Detroit lyricist & his label Stones Throw decided to get gully for the video version. “Guilty” as charged….
Big Sean – “Two Can Win”
“In honor of J. Dilla being one of the most influential producers of all time, I decided to lay a verse to one of my favorite tracks off of J. Dilla’s Donuts. Being from Detroit I feel I have a responsibility to honor his legacy n continue it in my own way. His soul will live forever… RIP J. Dilla” – Big Sean
Clear Soul Forces – “Get No Better” (Video)
The young Detroit homies Clear Soul Forces dropped a new video that I wasn’t even aware of until I saw it zip around on twitter via retweets. Especially fueled by actor Idris Elba’s twitter praise of their work. Good to see the brothers still grinding it out for as talented as they are. I had them on the radio show several months back & they basically gassed up their whip & drove to Atlanta for the interview. That’s dedication for that ass. They are definitely one of the motor city’s finest on the rise & should win with that type of grind. This is the first single off their upcoming album “Detroit Revolution(s)” due March 13th & this particular & single was produced by KanKick. The video was Directed by Richard Taylor.
Kiss My Converse: Bad Meets Evil Rocks With Chuck Taylor (Video)
Eminem & Royce Da 5’9 talk about their special limited edition Chuck Taylor sneaker with Converse. The special Chuck Taylor Allstar shoe is a part of the promo for their new album Hell: The Sequel that just dropped on Tuesday. Em & Royce also talk more about the album & their individual styles. Lyrically & Stylistically.
Elzhi – It Ain’t Hard To Tell (Video)
Elzhi drops the video to one of the bangers from his ‘Elmatic’ mixtape dedicated to Nas’s classic illmatic album. We’ve been bangin’ this joint on the radio show for the past few weeks. Niiiiice!
Elzhi – ‘Detroit State Of Mind’
Elzhi’s Highly Anticipated Project ‘Elmatic’ To Be Released May 10th
Out of the thousands of mixtapes & albums due to be released, this is one project that I’ve been waiting & looking forward to for quite some time now. To me Elzhi, formerly of Slum Village, is Detroit’s version of Nas. He is grossly underrated & when he first announced that he was doing a mixtape project inspired by Nas’s classic ‘illmatic’ album I knew he was best suited to represent well. Until May 10th arrives I’ll leave y’all with a few Elzhi joints that I still bang out on the ipod to hold y’all over…..

Elzhi – ‘Verbal Intercourse Part 2’ (prod by 14KT)
Producer Spotlight: 14KT
The Detroit area is killing it with these all of these highly talented producers & emcees. Check out this interview with 14KT who, to the mainstream masses, is one of the Detroit area’s best kept secrets on the boards. His fortunes are changing in terms of the familiarity lane as was also the winner of the Red Bull Big Tune producer battle. In addition 14KT produced this new banger called ‘Sweet Tee Ish’ featuring Boog Brown that we’ve been digging over here where he flips an old school Sweet Tee record. Watch the rest of the interview where he talks about growing up in nearby Ypsilanti Michigan (outside of Detroit), his group Athletic Mic League, & he also shows the fans how he does it.
