Grammy Winner D’Angelo Talks With Tavis Smiley About “Black Messiah” And More (Video)
Come to think of it: Was there ‘Neo-Soul’Â music before D’Angelo? Not much, if any. He was a founding father of the genre, so to speak. From the son of a Baptist preacher, heavily influenced by church music, to making that funky stuff that grew from steeping in all that Stevie Wonder, George Clinton, James Brown, and Prince growing up. Then he got ‘extra-grown’ for the ladies with that “Untitled (How Does It Feel)” song and video. That earned him a Grammy (Best Male R&B Vocal Performance).
And then…nothing…for like over 10 years.
Now D’Angelo is back with his latest project, “Black Messiah.” And here he is talking to Tavis about it and more. Hey, it took two episodes to convey the convo. Keep watching after the jump.

Nah, not yet HouseShoes. What’s up though?
I’ve been holding onto this for damn near two years.
A lot on deck from 14KT and Street Corner this year.
Stay tuned.

Well, well. A remix of “She’s Always In My Hair” from D’Angelo… by 14KT… nice. Thanks.
D’Angelo – Brown Sugar (@KingMost Redirection)
Sexy but sped up. Yep. Punched up, break-and-kick beat’d out… Never thought you’d hear “Brown Sugar” (by D’Angelo) re-done like this. Bet. Dope though.
With all projects rooted in diversity, Mixologi teams up with DJ Kingmost (SF) for a redirection of D’Angelo’s classic “Brown Sugar,” blended with the sounds of Lord Shorty, the godfather of Soca. This remix is truly the best of both worlds.

Giving insights on the people and trends that influence his music, past work and work in progress, his ‘process’ and more. Nearly 90 minutes of real talk from a really talented artist. We don’t hear from him like this often. So, take it in. Really.
R&B/Soul: DJ Rahdu – “Follow Me: D’angelo Flips, Remixes And Tributes” (Mixtape)
BamaLoveSoul and DJ Rahdu doing the love… keeping the flame of hope alive with this “Follow Me” flip mix while we wait on the next D’Angelo work of art. Now, this is just the 11-minute sampler. They have a full mix on the way. They cannot “can’t imagine him releasing a bomb” – which is a sentiment many share. This is how you hold your fav artist down while they are out of the spotlight.
“Enjoy Follow Me, our tribute to the fans that have been inspired by and hopefully inspire D’angelo and encourage him to release the next album we’ll be enjoying even 18 years later.”

R&B/Soul: D’angelo vs. Simbad – “Devilz Pie”
BamaLoveSoul dropped another another hot rock in my inbox (by way of Eavesdrop Radio) – a Simbad refix of “Devilz Pie” by D’Angelo. The track has a bouncy dance feel to it. Good stuff.

D’angelo Performs On The Set Of His GQ Magazine Photo Shoot (Video)

R&B: D’Angelo – “Black Hole Sun” (Cover)
D’Angelo has been missing for a while, and even though this is not a piece of his newest material, the releasing of any material from the soul singer is a good sign for his fans (including myself) who wants a return to the Brown Sugar and Voodoo days. According to ?uestlove this is an cover of SoundGarden’s classic “Black Hole Sun” recorded 8 years ago, but a part of warming the public up to D’Angelo as the new album is “97%” complete. We hear this all the time from artists who go on these long layoffs (see Lauryn Hill) and never get around to actually putting any material out that the people so desperately want to hear. However since ?uestlove is involved, this situation may provide a better outcome. Besides that, this is a pretty dope cover of a classic tune. Enjoy!
