Common Kills With This ‘Sway In The Morning’ Freestyle (Video)
REAL emcees keep a sharp sword; lyrical weapon ready and ready to pull it. Like Common. Have you seen the freestyle dude did on Sway In The Morning? Maaaaan! Maim-murder-death-kill with lyrics over a classic smooth boom-bap instrumental track. The flow feels so good, Com can barely contain his energy!
Common’s influence has paved the way for so many artists including Kendrick, J. Cole and Lil Bibby, so when he freestyles you can hear pieces of him they’ve incorporated into their own music.
Joining us this morning he spit a crazy freestyle around the topic of the American Black Film Festival. Common flows smooth as ever as he drops names of influential black role models as well as mentioning things black people have had to fight against.

Common x Malik Yusef x Kumasi x Aaron Fresh x Choklate x Laci Kay – “Trouble In The Water” (Video)
I know I’m supposed to help. That’s what I’m made for…
– Common
Shout to all the heads reading this who remember that Hip-Hop was a STRONG platform for social commentary; and to those who remember when performers used to posse up to magnify the message they spit. This “Trouble In The Water” song and visual is that at level 10! Press play and feel it. And if you do indeed feel it, consider signing this petition from The Hip-Hop Caucus (which produced the song and video) demanding that Rick Snyder (Governor of Michigan) create a compensation fund for Flint’s water crisis victims.

Classic Clips: Questlove Captures Recording Session With J Dilla, Common, & The Soulquarians (Video)
Check out this classic clip that Questlove of the legendary Roots crew unearthed recently in honor of J Dilla. It’s behind the scenes footage of the recording process for one of Common’s most talked about albums ‘Like Water For Chocolate.’ Crafting the soundscape for the project was J Dilla, James Poyser, & the rest of the Soulquarians who were recording it at the time. Check what Questlove had to say providing some interesting background history on the video, the process, & a few other little known facts…
“The Roots & Common were midway recording followup albums to their breakthrough Things Fall Apart & Like Water For Chocolate projects. two unapologetic “Neo Soul†joints. Having formed an unofficial collation sometime in 96, using the Native Tongue blueprint. The Soulquarians were born.
Common ‘Keeps It 100’ on Black Women & Fatherhood on ‘The Nightly Show with Larry Wilmore’ (Video)
Common recently appeared on the panel revolving around Black Fatherhood on ‘The Nightly Show with Larry Wilmore’ that airs on Comedy Central. New York Times columnist Charles Blow, founder of the Center for URban Families Joe Jones and comedian Mike Yard also take part in this discussion that began with the simple statement that ’72 percent of black children are born to unwed mothers.’
Although they tackle serious issues in this discussion, things get hilariously uncomfortable fast as Larry poses questions about whether they’d play in the Super Bowl instead of witnessing the birth of their first child & their opinions on whether or not black women are too domineering in relationships. Check out more video from the discussion below……
