Meryl Streep & Tom Hanks Expose Government Corruption In “The Post” (Trailer)

In our society, the press is supposed to function as a ‘watchdog on government’… to ‘comfort the afflicted and afflict to comfortable’… a very necessary role. But we have seen, time and again, how that can be a very DANGEROUS role for those in the press; who have dealt with threats on their lives and livelihoods to keep us all up in OUR government’s business (because it is OUR business).

Watergate. Iran Contra. The baseless war in Iraq (to take out weapons of mass destruction that were NOT there)… scandals uncovered by the press. When they do what they are meant to do, reporters serve a critical role in our democracy; holding those in power accountable.

This is an homage to those in the press who did their duty, at great risk, back in the day. “The Post” is looking like another incredible movie that tells a compelling real-life story about what some key figures in the press went through to keep America (and the world) informed about what the government tried to keep covered up.

Steven Spielberg directs Meryl Streep and Tom Hanks in “The Post,” a thrilling drama about the unlikely partnership between The Washington Post’s Katharine Graham (Streep), the first female publisher of a major American newspaper, and editor Ben Bradlee (Hanks), as they race to catch up with The New York Times to expose a massive cover-up of government secrets that spanned three decades and four U.S. Presidents. The two must overcome their differences as they risk their careers – and their very freedom – to help bring long-buried truths to light.
