Common Does A Soulful ‘Tiny Desk Concert’ At The White House (Video)
The White House is often at the center of some controversy, more so nowadays. But there was a recent time when there was less ‘crazy’ – as Keith Olbermann might say (here) – coming from the White House …or, at least, a different type of ‘crazy.’ Even then, something like this probably would not have made headline news. But it was certainly worthy of being documented. And I am glad NPR did. And after you watch, bet money that you will be, too.
We’ve never done a Tiny Desk Concert that wasn’t behind my desk at NPR. But when the White House called and said they were putting on an event called South by South Lawn, a day-long festival filled with innovators and creators from the worlds of technology and art, including music, we jumped at the chance to get involved. We chose Common as the performer and the White House library as the space.
This Tiny Desk Concert was a convergence of art and soul, mixing politics with heart. Common’s choice of songs dealt with incarceration as the new slavery, imagined a time where women rule the world and honored the man he looked up to all his life, his father. For this occasion, Common put together a special six-piece band of close friends that includes the great Robert Glasper, with his eloquent and delicate touch, on keyboards and Derrick Hodge, whose music spans from Hip-Hop to folk and has made a big imprint on the world of jazz, on bass. Common also asked his longtime friend and collaborator Bilal to sing on two songs. The performance includes three brand new songs, along with one classic, “I Used To Love H.E.R.”

How many producers do you know that can say they have worked one on one with the likes of Bilal, Ghostface, Souls Of Mischief and the Delfonics? Well the only one that comes to mind is Adrian Younge who was recently in Atlanta for his first DJ performance and ArtByOdell sat down with him for an exclusive interview. They talked about what inspires his musical process what he thinks of today’s R&B and what new albums he has coming out. He shares with us a great piece of information that he will have 4 albums out by the end of 2015 listen to find out who they are with and what the titles are!
“The level of execution of older music compared to music of today. By bringing in a Horn section, or just literally having a song arranged with complex chords and a bridge with ill structures rather than just noise put together for a Stripper to dance to.” – Adrian Younge

R&B/Soul: Bilal – “Back To Love”
It’s funny how when music is so timeless that you don’t quite take notice of the years that by when enjoying good music. Every now & then I turn back to listen to Bilal’s 2010 album ‘Airtight’s Revenge’ on on my iphone/itunes with some frequency. It’s hard to believe he just dropped this new single “Back To Love” for his upcoming project because the previous album was good enough to hold most of us over. Look out for the Philly soul singer’s upcoming album “A Love Surreal” right before Valentines day dropping February 12th. If you haven’t copped The Retrospection mixtape he released that we posted earlier you can download it for free from the link below.

R&B/Soul: Joy Denalane feat. Bilal – “Should Have Never” (Jake One Remix)
I’ve been up on Germany’s Joy Denalane for a few years now, but new songs from her don’t pop up that often from the multilingual soul singer since the 2006 release of her “Born & Raised” project. It was her standout track “Change” featuring Lupe Fiasco that really caught my attention coincidentally after I had returned back to Atlanta from a trip visiting with friends in Germany. Her solo appearances & collaborations are still rare releases but she still pops up every now & then on joints with fellow R&B artists like Dwele & Bilal as well as popping up on a few rap artists & producer based projects like on Virginia’s NOTTZ song “How Long Will It Last” from his “You Need This Music” album two years ago.  So with her relative absence in releasing any new material for a few years it was surprise to see OKP premier this new remix from Seattle based producer Jake One. Joy Denalane is set to drop a brand new project on April 3rd entitled “Maureen” which apparently has a much deeper significance other than it just being her middle name. It’s makes even more sense considering the early reports that the album has a dark bluesy & soulful edge to it that is quite difficult to fully categorize. Looking forward to some more goodness with this….We’ve waited long enough

Bilal – “Robots” (Tensei Remix) featuring Adad
There have been a few remixes I’ve heard to tracks off of Bilal’s ‘Airtight’s Revenge’ album that dropped almost a year ago. This one right here sounds just as dope as the original version to me yet totally different aurally speaking. Nevertheless it’s dope to have a good remix to breathe new life into Bilal’s project for those people who may have slept.
