History: Rare Footage Of Famed Scientist George Washington Carver (Video)
Fascinating!
My Grandpa (T. C. Cottrell) actually knew Dr. Carver. In fact, he gave Grandpa several of hair tonic treatments… right there on the Tuskegee Institute (way before it became Tuskegee University) campus back, back in the day! A bit of Carver & Cottrell history for you.
Now, I have been to the Museum several times. I even worked as a student research assistant for the Carver Foundation on Campus over several summers back in my teen years. But this footage, showing a bit of the LEGENDARY scientist/inventor as he lived, gives me chills… and swells of pride.
After all, I am Tuskegee, through and through. And so is this!
Originally shared on the US National archives website, this appears to be some of the only surviving color footage of famed inventor George Washington Carver (1860s-1943). Photographed here in and around his home at Tuskegee University by Dr. Cornelius Allen Alexander.

Fab Boy Boochie With R.I.P. Bars For ‘Cupcake’ (Video)
Shout to Birmingham’s (Alabama) Fabboy Boochie (aka Charles Smith) for this timely rhyme I caught on the Facebook feed. I think we will all feel this one for a while. We should. We must do better by our children.
We keep losing our babies in the most heinous ways. Recently, Kamille “Cupcake” McKinney was kidnapped from a party, and her remains were found a week later (more after the jump). Damn.

RaMell Ross’ Critically-Acclaimed Documentary On Black Life In The Rural South Debuts On PBS (Trailer)
Saw RaMell talking to Trevor on ‘The Daily Show’ about this. Oscar-nominated. Cool. Put the lens on being Black and from Alabama (raising my hand)… and it’s February (Black History Month). Word.
RaMell Ross’s “Hale County This Morning, This Evening,” one of the year’s most critically acclaimed films, is a dreamy and intimate journey through the world of Hale County, Alabama, a richly detailed glimpse into life in America’s Black Belt.

Environmental Injustice And Racism In Uniontown (Documentary)
I’m from Alabama. From a Black community in Alabama. I know, even before the documentary laid this out, this level of injustice is being done to my people (and by proxy, to ME). Been being done. And it still hurts.
Residents of this town have been living under the thumb of environmental injustice and racism #ThinkingInColor

Womb Tang Clan x Various Artists – “Nough Said” (Prod. By Sam Peezy)
Yo man. Salute to Alabama. And I’m not even talking Roll Tide (yet – saving that for Monday night).
I’m talking about not waiting for external appreciation to appreciate that which is important. The homie Thed Weller (aka Al Elliott aka Dude you saw on here doing the TEDx Birmingham and such) shared this joint honoring the female artists over there – the clique inside the clique – doing Hip-Hop / Poetry / Song honorably. That’s the Womb Tang Clan on this track with the men that stand with them. “Nough Said.”
Okay… a little more? Okay, so this is a jawn from the soundtrack of a mini-documentary on an incredible venue over there in Birmingham, Alabama; that recently got sold, closed, razed and renovated… The High Note Lounge. Gonna miss that spot.
I personally know a lot of these folks. Hell, I knew Chef T. Randle when he was (nah, not gonna put his biz out like that)! And Joell Regal (smokin’ HOT, esp. on the mic). And producer Sam Peezy Addams (you KNOW him and his work; my brother who backs my blood brother BoneBreaker Jones with the beat on here)!
(Me! Trying to get a copy of that “We Are The High Note” documentary AND the soundtrack. Yup. Putting it out there!)

Atlanta’s Mercedes-Benz Stadium Opens College Football With Alabama Vs. Florida State (Video)
In every good way, it was a great kickoff for the new home to Atlanta football, Mercedes-Benz Stadium… and a bit ‘greater’ if you are a Crimson Tide fan. A good look on TV and it looked like an epic event was being enjoyed by those fortunate enough to be at the FSU vs. UA game live. Very unfortunate late game injury to FSU Seminole quarterback Francois though.
Watch the game highlight reel above.

BoneBreaker Jones – “Say What You Gotta Say” feat. Sam Peezy
YES! Now BoneBreaker Jones is coming with the RAW like he s’posed to!! That “Revenge Of The Nerds” is gonna be SICK!! We got a taste of what dude could do on the “Livin Proof” post. Now, take a listen to the latest, “Say What You Gotta Say” (the first single off the album inspired by and named after the ’80s movie and soundtrack). Sam Peezy produced the beat for the track (and whole album).
I been out here; part of the masses that have something to say but are rarely listened to. A weirdo. So what. I’m a nerd. I’m proud of it. Just like in #RevengeOfTheNerds from the ’80s. But I will not give up trying to free my speech. Eventually they gotta hear me! And I hope you enjoy hearing “Say What You Gotta Say.”

Tig Knight – “Passion of the Knight” (Video)
Birmingham stand up!! Alabama’s own Tig Knight has been doing the thing on the Indie Hip-Hop scene in the Steel City for some time now; but this one…WOOOO…this one is gritty! And I love it! Check out “Passion of the Knight” – a dark introspective interpretation of life as a young inner-city Black male - for yourself.
