Spike Lee Speaks On The Basis Of His New Film ‘Chi-Raq’ & Elaborates on Chicago, Sex Strikes (Video)
Interesting. Spike Lee and Stephen Colbert discuss the dire straits of Chicago’s war-like violence and casualty rates, the foundations/inspirations for “Chi-Raq” (a spin off the Ancient Greek satire “Lysistrata,” in which Athenian women vow to withhold sex until their men end the The Peloponnesian War), and the possibility of sex strikes on campus in the coming semester after his movie drops.
“I think that a sex strike could really work on college campuses where there’s an abundance of sexual harassment and date rapes. Second semester it’s going to happen. Once people come back from Christmas, there’s going to be sex strikes at universities and college campuses across this country. I believe it.â€

Gun control. Police brutality. So much in a short clip to watch. And you must!

CHI-RAQ (Trailer)
Now THIS is a Spike Lee Joint! “CHI-RAQ” hits theaters December 4, 2015. Over the top dramatic antics and dialogue to match and get out the message of an out of control situation. Telling a story you cannot ignore. This trailer teases a movie that channels the energies of “School Daze,” “Do The Right Thing,” and “Malcolm X” in the best ways. Tapping the actors familiar to Lee’s old movie line-ups (seeing you Samuel L. Jackson, Wesley Snipes) and folks you get to see stretch in new ways (go for it, Nick Cannon)!
You got the real Chi Raq story from us on here before. Let Spike show it to you in his surreal way.
(Interesting approach in there, too… holding back that ‘piece’ to make ’em put down their pieces as a way to peace in Chi-town.)
This Life-Sized R2-D2 Will Bring You a Cold Beer (Video)
Okay, we thought we posted the ‘ultimate’ Star Wars video already (see here). But this clip right here… this clip right here, maaaaaan! Let’s just say R2-D2 is no longer in a galaxy far, far away, helping light saber-swinging Jedi Knights. It’s here on Earth (for about $9000, in your home), helping you get over a hard day at the job by bringing you a cold one. Nice!
Just in time for the unreal fanboy hype for Star Wars: The Force Awakens, electronics company Haier Asia has created a mobile mini fridge life-sized version of R2-D2. Sure, these full-scale remote-controlled droids are $9,000, but they’ll cool your beer and bring it to you.

The Dangerous Rise of K2: America’s Cheapest High (Video)
K2 is a baaaad trip. Just watch this VICE News video on this whack marijuana substitute; comprised of plant matter sprayed with synthetic chemicals (designed to mimic the effects of marijuana’s active ingredient).
Weed is already lower-priced than most all illegal or controlled substances. However, VICE News reports (above) that K2 is currently America’s cheapest way to get high. The drug is often sold at corner stores, labeled as potpourri and unfit for human consumption. A bag of K2 sells for $5 to $10, while a joint goes for just $1.
The drug’s dangerous side effects have taken a toll on a wide variety of communities across the country, particularly in New York City. US poison control centers received more than 6,000 K2 calls in the first nine months of 2015, around a quarter of those calls came from NYC.
VICE News’ Nilo Tabrizy takes us to take a look a glimpse of the challenges New York City is facing with K2 through the lens of volunteer ambulance corps and harm reduction specialists in its outer boroughs.
Daft Punk Unchained (Trailer)
“Daft Punk Unchained” is the first ever documentary film on the most secretive duo in the world. It tells the story of two uncompromising artists – Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo – who have created a unique artistic universe. Throughout their career they have remained determined to control every link in the chain of their creative work (most notably, their visages, faces covered by chrome robo-masks nowadays). Appearing in the Daft Punk film are some of their closest collaborators and friends from Kanye West, Pharrell Williams, Nile Rodgers and more.

Kxng Crooked – “Don’t Close Your Eyes (Ashamed)” feat. Truth Ali x Jonathan Hay x Morgan McRae [Video]
God, I told myself these are the words I’d never say.
I’m my own worst opponent, and it hurts in every way.
You ever thought about smashing the mirrors in the house,
So you don’t have to see the same person that hurts you everyday?
I have.
– Kxng Crooked
Deep right from the start… Maaan, when we got wind of this a couple of months back we told you here the vid would be deep, too!
Kxng Crooked (of Slaughterhouse) opens up about alcoholism, depression and suicide in his brand new music video. The demo version of the audio to “Don’t Close Your Eyes (Ashamed)” dropped earlier commemorating the birthday of the late Keith Whitley. This is the official version produced by Jonathan Hay and Ajami (linked below). The single will appear on the forthcoming LP – “The Urban Hitchcock” LP – due out October 5, 2015.
“I’ve been in several dark places in my life, betrayed by those closest to me, or feelings of hopelessness in situations I can’t control, or even others trying to remove me from this earth. It takes its toll. I have to rise above and keep moving forward for myself and my loved ones. I like to meditate and read a lot so that helps. Music is my ultimate medicine, though.â€
– Kxng Crooked
Much better therapy, Kxng. Respect.

Throwback: Dave Chappelle In This 1990 ‘Spread The Word – High School HIV/AIDS’ Public Service Announcement (Video)
Okay, stop giggling. Dave really meant this. Trying to get down with a serious work on a serious topic. Thinking about where he was in his career when this came out, let’s say he succeeded on several fronts. Eventually finding his comedic lane to ride gave him a bigger voice for a much larger audience; but this shows that the actor/comedian already had a mind to say something of substance before he really got on. Watch.
Okay “Control Your Jimmy” is funny… but don’t bag on the man’s skills. You see he is not rapping today.
Black Mass (Trailer)
In 1970s South Boston, FBI Agent John Connolly (Joel Edgerton) persuades Irish mobster James “Whitey†Bulger (Johnny Depp) to collaborate with the FBI and eliminate a common enemy: the Italian mob. The drama tells the story of this unholy alliance, which spiraled out of control, allowing Whitey to evade law enforcement, consolidate power, and become one of the most ruthless and powerful gangsters in Boston history.
Looks like an early fall movie ticket to buy. “Black Mass” will hit theaters September 18, 2015.
Sandra Bland: How Did An Improper Turn Signal Lead to Her Death? (Video)
Recently the country has had their eyes on Texas yet again for another encounter of cops and the treatment of Black Women. Â A couple months back there was the incident of cops in McKinney TX violently attacking young black children and a young sista was slammed to the ground and sat on by a Race Soldier I mean officer of the law. Â Now in Waller County, TX the sad story of Sandra Bland who was found dead in her jail cell after she was arrested for a turn signal violation. Â The local cops have claimed it is suicide but the Bland family disagrees and thinks their is foul play. Â A lot of people across the country thought the same especially since Sandra Bland was an outgoing 28 year old who just landed her dream job at her alma mater Prairie View A&M University. Â That doesn’t strike me as someone who wants to kill themselves over a traffic stop. Â Dr Boyce Watkins uses his platform to speak on this topic and invites Yvette Carnell founder of ( BreakingBrown.com ) & Benjamin Dixon ( TheBenjaminDixonShow.com ) to join him and go deeper into this incident and what it represents. Â The sad reality is this traffic stop led to this woman’s death and the officer who is paid to protect and serve did his part to ignite confrontation. Â This is great discussion by free thinkers not controlled by corporate media. Â Video of the officer pulling Sandra Bland over after the jump.

Have A Seat 2 Chainz, A $14K Seat, On ‘The Most Expensivest Sh*t’ (Video)
Hey, kids, it’s Christopher Guy! What do you mean you don’t know about him? ‘The James Bond Of Furniture’ and you gonna act like… Okay, we didn’t know about him, either. But a dude who makes chairs that go for $14,000 (sometimes more) certainly merits a sit down with bling king 2 Chainz. Yup. More out-of-control opulence in this episode of ‘The Most Expensivest Sh*t.’ See earlier episodes we’ve posted on here via the link below.

The Future And Music Collectives (Video)
Very interesting. Music/culture collectives – already seen as go-tos for indie and underground (read: real) music and movements – could very well be controllers of the world of tomorrow. Time was, we went to other taste makers – deejays, radio, clubs, label imprints, print and video magazines – to learn what was new and worthy. Nowadays, largely enabled by Internet and mobile channels, we turn to curators who are independent themselves (e.g. not beholden to station management, programming consultants, the ‘charts’ or record/media manufacturers). Could it be that enough of us have turned away from old commercial channels that big name companies of all kinds who want to reach us reach out to Soulections and OKPlayers (and ehem JAYFORCEs) of the world? Real music, real culture from real outlets NOT begging or cowering for big ad bucks.
Could be. Check out the discussion above.
Paraplegic Man Drinks His Beer Using His New Robotic Arm (Video)
Gotta love when science and technology make life easier, especially for someone who might otherwise have a particularly hard time with it. Enter Erik.
Erik G. Sorto who has been paralyzed from the neck down for about 12 years is now able to command a robot arm using brain implants that read his intentions.
For med tech taking a huge step toward replacing lost limbs and limb functions with advanced robotics, let’s have a drink… with Erik! Watch the man sip a beer using his new robo-arm, which he controls with his mind!
Technology: Surgical Robot With A Super-Delicate Touch (Video)
Precision and reduction of risk in hazardous situations have been two things robo-technology has been known for for the longest. Delicacy though, not so much. But check this out: There’s now a robot that could suture a wound, slowly and deliberately moving a piece of skin back over the exposed flesh and stitching it in place with its tiny metal clamps; and with snip of its scissor (on the arm) the job is immaculately done. So immaculate, why not name it after an artist; like the artist who influenced the design of the earliest robots -Â Leonardo da Vinci.
[T]he da Vinci Si Surgical System, the most advanced robotic technology available which can be used for a range of minimally invasive procedures in gynecology, urology, thoracic and general surgery. For surgeons, da Vinci’s benefits include better vision, more precision and more control due to the system’s magnification and 3D capabilities, elimination of tremors and multiple degrees and directions of movement. Through da Vinci’s robotic wrists which are capable of rotating 540 degrees, surgeons are able to perform movements that aren’t possible with human hands.
See the Da Vinci Surgical System delicately peel a grape (above)… and surgically repair one (after the jump)! The System still requires a human surgeon, but this device is a huge leap in medical technology and science.
Game Over: The Rise & Fall Of Atari (Documentary)
Dope! Holler all you want about your PlayStations, Xboxes, and whatevers, young’uns. Back back in the day, Atari was king! The console gaming system of the 1970s, game graphics on the set were low-grade – not even comparable to the video games in the arcades of the day
See kids, to play the hottest games out, like Pac-Man, you had to go to an arcade (a room full of big dedicated video game machines, aka a game room, probably in a mall or shopping strip). Through much of the 1980s you took quarters to the arcade, or a trip to a friend’s house to play video games (unless you were that friend with the game set-up). Hours of fun to be had sitting around a dinky TV, holding controllers with joysticks and “fire” buttons until your hands ached, and your legs cramped, and your eyes were a blur.
What ever happened to Atari systems though? New and more advanced home gaming came along for sure. But did you know there was a mass burial of Atari games – thousands upon thousands buried somewhere out Mexico way? Plenty more to the story – “Atari: Game Over” – and all you have to do is click play above for part 1 of it. Part 2 after the jump.
Nardwuar Interviews The Legendary Chuck D At SXSW (Video)
Well, would you look at that! South By South West (SXSW) is definitely the place where folks from all over connect. Consider that the Internet Serviette Nardwuar came from way up north (Canada) to meet up and hold up a mic to the revolutionary mic controller, Mr. Chuck D of Public Enemy, reppin’ the East Coast. Everything’s bigger in Texas, including this interview. We usually see Nard catching his subjects off guard between the gifts and his grasp of quirky facts from their histories. However, this time, the interviewee blesses our fav Net Nerd with knowledge. Enjoy!
DJ Scratch: “We Have Accepted Biting, And Biting Was Not Allowed In Hip-Hop” (Video)
The truth hurts. So get ready for some pain, as DJ Scratch (turntable controller for EPMD back in the day) delivers truth and insight into the ‘why’ behind Hip-Hop’s homogeneity nowadays. The beats sound the same. Truth. The rhymes? No need to even say it. But considering DJ Scratch’s Golden Era pedigree, it is amazing that he is able to break it down for us in the video above without losing his cool or shedding a tear about our music’s loss of authenticity.
(Feel it when Scratch says he did not even want to copy any of DJ Jazzy Jeff’s techniques and standards back in the day… They were HIS… and the rule for all things Hip-Hop was: No biting allowed!)

“We are being faced with economic annihilation!”
Wow! Anybody not awake yet? Well, wake them up and make sure they don’t miss this @ArtByOdell recommended documentary. It’s not about lack of jobs. It’s about lack of control. And even in Washington DC, almost half the populous has neither. Well, there’s that one Black man in DC with a job on Pennsylvania Avenue. But if you aren’t living where he is, you will probably get something from watching this documentary.
Technology: Printed Midi DJ Decks for DJ QBert’s Album (Video)
Technology? Nah, this is too crazy for that. How about incredi-tech? Amaza-tronics? Hell, something! This is Novalia’s and DJ Qbert’s interactive DJ Decks… in an album cover… the first in the world. Why are you still sitting???
QBert’s Kickstarter-funded “Extraterrestria” album features a set of working Bluetooth MIDI decks and controls that connect to iOs and OSx. Touching the paper connects to the Algoriddim DJAY app, allowing the user to scratch, mix and fade any songs they load into the software.
Complete with two decks, a cross fader and an array of SFX buttons beautifully printed onto paper using printed electronics and artwork designed by Morning Breath for QBert, the decks demonstrate the possibilities for interconnectivity between the physical and digital in a way that can enhance user experience.
Don’t believe us just watch. Yeah, mind blown so bad… paraphrasing Trinidad James over here. SICK tech!!
Want one? Tell them Novalia here.
