Education: Ronald Nelson Chose To Attend The University Of Alabama… Over EVERY Ivy League School (Video)
This hits, and hits ME, hard!
I was once a high school senior with eyes on an Ivy League acceptance prize. I was this close…THIIIISSS (like three out of seven admission board votes) close to getting in, too. However, I fell way below Merit-Based financial aid thresholds; and with out-of-state fees, had I been accepted to Cornell University, I might have been even further in college debt than I am now.
(Spoiler Alert: I’m DEEP in that debt sh!t, yo. So deep that my poor Tuskegee, Alabama accent just went BK NY. Even though I’m 4-6 ’til the deep-six… son! And before you ask, homie, hometown Tuskegee University’s fees got higher than folks on the best Cali Bud just when I was ready to apply there. I definitely would’ve got gaffled with that debt, homie… Oh no, my accent just went ’90s West Coast Hip-Hop… poorly. Haaaaaa!)
But I did not get accepted to the one Ivy League college I pursued, unlike Ronald Nelson – an incoming Freshman to The Capstone (aka The University Of Alabama). Ronald, wise beyond his years, has made a bold decision to turn down offers (and aid) from EVERY Ivy League school that accepted him (ALL of them), and several other colleges, to attend UA.
Ronald did the math, and he kept the faith about his post-graduate future which will be rife with so many options.
“With people being in debt for years and years, it wasn’t a burden that Ronald wanted to take on and it wasn’t a burden that we wanted to deal with for a number of years after undergraduate,” Ronald Sr. said. “We can put that money away and spend it on his medical school, or any other graduate school.”
Plus, though I do not know Ronald’s overall ‘tude at his current age, I would have been SUCH an Ivy League azz-jack. I believe I am a better person for going Crimson Tide (UA) instead of Big Red (Cornell). An Ivy League a-hole in the hole financially. And noooo, going Ivy League does not make folks ‘holes (ex: our hella cool U.S. President went to Harvard)… I am just talking about me.
And to Ronald, who I praise for exhibiting such wisdom at such an early age: Bravo, sir… and ROLL TIDE!

BoneBreaker Jones – “Say What You Gotta Say” feat. Sam Peezy
YES! Now BoneBreaker Jones is coming with the RAW like he s’posed to!! That “Revenge Of The Nerds” is gonna be SICK!! We got a taste of what dude could do on the “Livin Proof” post. Now, take a listen to the latest, “Say What You Gotta Say” (the first single off the album inspired by and named after the ’80s movie and soundtrack). Sam Peezy produced the beat for the track (and whole album).
I been out here; part of the masses that have something to say but are rarely listened to. A weirdo. So what. I’m a nerd. I’m proud of it. Just like in #RevengeOfTheNerds from the ’80s. But I will not give up trying to free my speech. Eventually they gotta hear me! And I hope you enjoy hearing “Say What You Gotta Say.”

Killer Mike On ‘Real Time With Bill Maher’ (Video)
Bill Maher and panelists John Waters, Heather McGhee, Charles Murray and Michael Render – aka Killer Mike – discuss the criticism of Michelle Obama’s Tuskegee (home to our own @ojones1) speech and the underlying causes of the Baltimore riots (above).
“…Why are you burning down your own community? [We] burned down a community that [we] don’t own!”
– Killer Mike
Bam! Folks don’t destroy what they truly own. Makes sense, right? Mike always does. Continue after the jump with more Killer Mike telling it like it T-I-’tis (like the elders say) – especially about Bill O’Reilly – on HBO’s Real Time With Bill Maher. Also have the bonus show, Overtime, embedded after the jump.
Swedish Cops Actions Reflect A Model For Professional Restraint (Video)
Proud American. Proud Alabamian. Native of Tuskegee. If you got jokes, go on and let them fly. Okay, while they’re yammering, please watch the above video and let me speak on this.
This clip exemplifies what it means to be a PEACE officer; not an officer with a piece. Like everyone else contributing to this visual going viral, what I applaud is the COURAGE these PROFESSIONALS exhibited; putting themselves IN DANGER when (as visitors) they could have remained bystanders… AND how they CHOSE to employ TRAINING, JUDGEMENT, and CARE… to PROTECT and SERVE everyone on the train (including the two fighting).
Now, I have not mentioned nationality yet. The above emphasized traits are those we hope peace officers worldwide would universally apply. Hopefully, police exhibit such traits regularly in Sweden. I don’t know. Hopefully, their citizenry appreciates law enforcement behavior norms like those in the clip as we would. That said, I have no beef with police; yet I still find myself scared at times that they may ‘find’ beef with me or my folks. Hopefully, the model behavior shown above fuels our desire to find, and make viral, images of our TRAINED PROFESSIONALS using JUDGEMENT and CARE as they PROTECT and SERVE us. And if those clips are too rare to be found and made to go viral… Hopefully, we will DISCOVER what it will take to make it so us witnessing good cop behavior is not so rare.
Look. I want responsible caring police professionals ready to serve in my community. Yes, I do. Admittedly, I am not sure that is the case in a lot of cases right now; but I really want it to be. Yes, I do. I believe this is possible. Do you?
Let’s discuss. Tweet me or leave a comment.

Raekwon – “Zoom” / “Free”
Another doper-than-dope Hip-Hop dosed redux of a late 20th century classic… this time times two. Yuh! Yooo @ojones1 Raekwon touched on that Commodores jam “Zoom” (Tuskegee represent)… and got at that “Free” as a B-side wrap up for this gift to the eager #TBT (Throwback Thursday) fan masses eagerly waiting for this weekly blessing.
BoneBreaker Jones – “Livin Proof” (Rebooth)
Okay, deep breaths. Twenty years is a long enough wait. So here goes: I have kept word of this personal project I have been working on from pretty much EVERYBODY (JayForce and my Beatz & Lyrics fam included); partly because it means so much to me but also because timing is crucial…for most everything!
This a reboot (e.g. redo, redux, reffixx mixtape… I actually call it a Rebooth) of the Group Home classic “Livin’ Proof.” Ever since this came out about 20 years ago, I have wondered what my favorite DJ Premier beats off that album would sound under verses from emcees I know and admire. Well, viola! Check out this work of love (TOTALLY FREE, of course) – The “Livin Proof” (Rebooth LP) from BoneBreaker Studios, featuring various artists over the original music by DJ Premier.
This post is for the title track, from BoneBreaker Jones. His music video for this is coming next week. Prepare your hearts and minds to partake, as the reverend would say.
Check it out. Download and pass it on if you like. I LOVE IT (but then again, I’ve got 20 years of bias built up).
(What’s crazy is… several artists on the project – including the homie SkyBlew – were barely on the planet when Group Home dropped the original plate!)
Enjoy.

Texans Will Soon Be Drinking Treated Waste Water. Who’s Thirsty? (Video)
How thirsty have you EVER been? Would you ever consider toilet water? What if it was guaranteed purified at a higher quality than the tap water you drink now? What if local authorities made it so that, very soon, treated waste water (including that reclaimed from sewer reservoirs) was pumped directly into your home’s water pipes? Businessweek reports that that is the deal in Wichita Falls (Texas, USA) now. The nightly news telecast clip above, from a while back, talks about another Texas town about to do the same thing. Okay, get all your ew’s out now… Done yet? Good. Drink up! It’ll be alright.
“You can take any water and turn it into drinking water. There is the technology out there to take out everything.â€
– Joseph Cotruvo, Washington water consultant
Now, I grew up drinking well water (still do, when I get home to Tuskegee) with a basic filter on the capture tank and another on the faucet… no treatment, chemicals or nothing… I have also had the “cleaner” bottled water. I suppose I could get used to something in between. I know I could if I lived in constant drought conditions and there was no other choice (especially once demand for bottled water drove its price higher than gas at the pump).
How about you?

Unsung Hollywood: Robin Harris (Video)
Don’t get @ojones1 started on the greatness of Robin Harris! You will get that story about him and his dad pushing the 1978 ’98 Regency Oldsmobile through Montgomery and Tuskegee (Alabama) all Saturday… with that Robin in concert cassette tape in the deck. Guaranteed. Comedic legend on the rise. Gone way too soon. Gone but not forgotten. Especially if TVOne’s Unsung Hollywood has anything to do with it!
‘Friday Night Tykes’ Docuseries Follows Texas Youth Football & What It Is Doing For & To The Kids (Video)
Thinking baseball is still America’s #1 sport? C’mon man! It’s football. I’m from Ala-damn-bama… ROLL TIDE! So, trust me, I know how much a religious experience football in America can be. And peewee youth football, forget about it. At that level you have an insane mix of kids who are only beginning to learn what the spirit of competition is… and parents who have been possessed by that spirit. Came across this Esquire Network series ‘Friday Night Tykes’ (airing Tuesdays 9 PM EST) … named with an obvious flip on the movie and TV series title ‘Friday Night Lights’ (and the love of young folk football is related just as crazily in both). Now, Alabama is wild about its football; but Texas…
In America, football is king… and nowhere is football bigger than in Texas. With exclusive access to the 8 to 9 year-old Rookies division of the Texas Youth Football Association, this 10-part docuseries follows five teams on and off the field during the 2013 season. Throughout, coaches and parents offer insight into why they believe they’re teaching valuable lessons about discipline and dedication, but also grapple with serious questions about parenting, safety and at what price we’re pushing our kids to win.
You might be able to tell that this hits a personal chord for me. Got a li’l something after the jump that’ll show you why.

History/Politics: After 50 Years, Civil Rights Pioneer John Lewis Still Says ‘We Cannot Give In!’ (Video)
RESPECT to the only living speaker/organizer from the 1963 March on Washington DC, Congressman John Lewis! What were you (or will you be) doing at 23? Probably not getting beaten trying to achieve the right to vote, thanks to the Congressman, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Dr. Bernard LaFayette and other activists who marched and fought for for that right for us! Check out the video of the Civil Rights pioneer still speaking on it above. We cannot give up… we cannot give in!
Representative Lewis, referencing his suffering at ‘Bloody Sunday’ in Selma decades ago, is talking about the U.S. Supreme Court’s recent stripping of the Voting Rights Act; as Dixie-crat states in the South are now allowed to make voting laws without having them cleared by the Federal Court or Government. Come on! There was a REASON we needed to have Federal oversight of Southern states’ voting policymaking… to make/keep things fair! If you need a ‘refresher’ course, Google ‘Gomillion v. Lightfoot’ (and Tweet me if you like; as I am from Tuskegee, Alabama… we can talk).

EYJAI – “Rear View” featuring Sir Calloway x Aleon Craft x Mimi (Video)
EYJAI puts it all in his “Rear View” in the video for his song featuring Sir Calloway, Mimi, and the homie Aleon Craft. EYJAI a.k.a. Mr. MakonCounty (for Macon County, Alabama, no doubt) is a native of Tuskegee, Alabama, and a grinder who has obviously made more than a few trips up and down I-85. (His bio notes stage shows in Atlanta and around his hometown; as well as collabos with ATLiens BackBone and Aleon Craft.) Keep an ear out for his work (including the forthcoming mixtape on which “Rear View” will be featured, entitled “The Resurrection”). An Aleon Craft co-sign is an impressive highlight in a budding Hip-Hop career!
Red Tails (Movie Trailer III)
I can’t wait to see this movie & in a way I wish it would have opened during the holidays instead of on January 20th 2012, but I’ll be in the theater regardless when it opens. This is the third alternate trailer from the film. Check the briefing below about this particular trailer to the movie…
“1944. As the war in Europe continues to take its toll on Allied forces, the Pentagon brass has no recourse but to consider unorthodox options – including the untried and untested African-American pilots of the experimental Tuskegee training program. Just as the young Tuskegee men are on the brink of being shut down and shipped back home, they are given the ultimate chance to show their courage. Against all the odds, with something to prove and everything to lose, these intrepid young airmen take to the skies to fight for their country – and the fate of the free world.” – Lucasfilms

George Lucas “Red Tails” Film (Trailer)
George Lucas is widely known for his Star Wars series of films over the years, but one of the many projects he’s had in the works over the last 23 years has been the upcoming film “Red Tails” based on the true story of the Tuskegee Airmen during World War II. I’m really looking forward to this film when it’s released in January of next year not only because of its historical significance, but also in how the Lucasfilm magic is employed in the special effects. The action in this trailer sequence is an indication of that at work. The movie stars Cuba Gooding Jr, Terrence Howard, Method Man, Ne-Yo, & Nate Parker and is directed by “Treme’s” Anthony Hemingway.

Everyday is Black History: Rosa Parks (Feb 4,1913- Oct 25,2005)
Born on February 4, 1913, Rosa Parks, the mother of the Civil Rights Movement, was born in Tuskegee, Alabama as Rosa Louise McCauley. Her family background was diverse, a blend of African-American, Scots-Irish and Cherokee-Creek. After her parents, James and Leona, separated, Rosa and her family moved to Montgomery, Alabama, where she attended several schools until forced to care for her ailing grandmother and later, for her mother, too.
