There have been a million and one producer and MC combinations over the years, but none are quite like JAY-Z and DJ Premier. The Marcy legend and Gang Starr icon have produced nothing but fire over their brief stint of collaboration, first exploring their chemistry in 1996 for ‘Reasonable Doubt’ (“D’Evils,” “Friend or Foe,” “Bring it On”) and again for Hov’s sophomore LP, ‘In My Lifetime,’ Vol. 1. That album’s multi-part opening, “Intro/A Million and One Questions/Rhyme No More,” is a favorite—a song that Premier broke down in the latest installment of MASS APPEAL’s new series, “Off The Record.”

The push for that forthcoming “Which Way Iz West” is on. MC Eiht is out with another one. And he has the homie DJ Preemo with him doing the most on the Brenk Sinatra-produced track “Got That”… but not how you think. And WHY isn’t Premier scratching on this??? Well…
I’ve loved this track ever since the rough draft. When I was mixing the song down, Eiht kept saying “Got That” after the verses and I was going to put some scratches on it. I’m sitting at the board, saying the three lines to myself because I felt like it would fit in the blanks. I decided to go in the booth to record it and see if it would blend with the song. I’m not a fan of my own voice so I sent it back to Eiht for approval and his replay was literally GEAH.

It’s like if Michael Jackson (RIP) consulted on the video and said put some it don’t matter if it’s “Black Or White” (or gay or straight or Muslim…) in there. Get into this and groove with it. Oh, okay, this post is supposed to be about Miguel on the Preemo-produced “2 Lovin U” song. And how do we know it’s a track by Preemo? It’s the signature scratching baby. You hear those ‘damn’ samples scratched into the hook? Well, the rough, eventually shelved, early version of this song was called “Damned.” So, naturally, Preem scratched the ‘damn’ thing the f**k up like you know he do!
They decided to keep that element. Dope music was the result. Nice collaboration!

Preemo ONLY plays the bangers! That’s his lane, and it is not for the wack. And he is DEFINITELY qualified to be a gatekeeper for real Hip-Hop. To be clear, DJ Premier is not hating on that artist you like, but if he or she is wack… Oh well.

A documentary with Jay Z and Nas is in the works, and DJ Premier also has a solo album—‘Last Session at 320’—on the way. He also discusses Desiigner, Dave East, Young M.A., and how he’s stayed relevant for multiple decades.
