J-Rell is a producer/DJ I have been listening to for maybe 3 or 4 years. I was put on to his J Dilla tribute which he dropped back in 2007 and it is in permanent rotation. The level of creativity in the beats on the project is amazing. I spent the the next years finding the samples and appreciating more the way he crafted that piece of work. Other than 14kt’s Nowalataz, I can’t find another Dilla tribute that comes close to its level.
Since that release Rell has done a lot musically in Chicago as a DJ and a producer. He works with a lot of Chicago artist along with his work on the Beat Battle scene. In 2009 he took the crown at the Red Bull Beat Battle in Chicago making it to the Finals in Atlanta.
His flip of D’Angelo’s Untitled got ?estlove of The Roots attention and he spun the jam the same day he heard it.
