Meet Wavy The Creator, an undefinable multi-faceted artist with a vision quite unlike anyone else.
Born in Lagos, Nigeria, but partially raised in the States, Wavy’s first major opportunity in the creative world came when she was shooting performance photos of an artist friend. A chance meeting with that night’s headliner – Nigerian Hip-Hop superstar Olamide – resulted in an invitation to return to Lagos to collaborate on his future visual projects.
Although almost entirely self-trained, Wavy’s photography made an immediate impact on the domestic scene. Her shots of Olamide were simultaneously naturalistic and stylized, intimate but also glamorous. She soon became an in-demand creative, photographing the nation’s leading artists, launching a fashion collection, and directing a short film.
While Wavy had worked on music before, being surrounded by such life-affirming sounds sparked a new found love of music. As her social media following exploded, she dropped her euphoric breakthrough track ‘H.I.G.H.’ (Her In Greater Heights) which amplified the attention bestowed upon her.
Such was the track’s impact that she was invited to play the huge Homecoming stadium show for Boy Better Know Africa alongside J Hus, Skepta, Not3s, Wizkid, Davido and more.
Now Wavy is set to go global as she drops the new track ‘Shaku’ – her first release for Disturbing London.
An exuberant, celebratory collision of shimmering rhythms, soulful vocals, and uplifting vibes, ‘Shaku’ is the perfect introduction for Wavy to reach a wider international audience.
“It was inspired by the latest dance style in Africa, shaku,†explains Wavy. “I like to be different so I added my spin to it and it was perfect. Most of the songs I have recorded are off the vibes. This was recorded in my producer friend’s bedroom when we were chilling. He was making a track and all I was singing in my head was ‘shaku, shakushaku ouu’ and bam! We had a song in under fifteen minutes.â€
The contrast between the song’s undeniable energy and its darker opening lyrics (“Life can be unfair / My mind plays tricks on meâ€) only adds to its joyous intensity.
“When I made the song I was going through some down times,†she admits. “But I was able to overcome them by believing in the now and the positive, because that’s all that truly matters. It’s saying even when you’re down, always remember everything else that is up.â€
For Wavy, music, photography, fashion and film are all innately intertwined: “It’s like I had multiple children at once, but none of them are identical. They stem from the same place, but they’re all uniquely created.â€
Honest, expressive, creative and boundary-breaking, Wavy The Creator stands out like an alien amidst mere mortals. This is only the beginning.
