VICE: The Other Side of Brazil’s World Cup (Video)

Futbol fever has taken hold of the world! The World Cup is underway in Brazil, and while we were tuned in to NBA Finals… the rest of the world had their eyes and minds on the big soccer tourney. Well, covering the story before that story, VICE was in Brazil doing an expo on the lead-up to the event.

The Brazilian government is spending an estimated $14 billion on this year’s tournament, making it the most expensive World Cup to date. This has provoked outrage among Brazilians, who view the government as corrupt. This growing unrest caused violent anti-government protests to break out in June 2013, and these protests have continued with increasing momentum in the lead-up to the World Cup. In response to these demonstrations, the Brazilian government has deployed police and military throughout the country to try to suppress the masses. Despite this crackdown, major demonstrations continue to take place in cities across the country as international teams begin to arrive for the games.

Impactful multimedia journalism delivered on-point. Par for the course for VICE NEWS.

Bleached Beauty: Kenyan Women Are Risking Their Health in Attempts to Lighten Their Skin (Video)

One has to wonder how far is too far? Some folks are totally against makeup; while some say ‘never leave home without it.’ Cosmetics can be used for slight beauty enhancement or covering blemishes that might otherwise wreck a person’s self esteem and day-to-day function. So, what about lightening of one’s skin? We have lightening patches to even skin tone in the States, but what about the growing trend for our Kenyan sisters to lighten up entirely? If it can be done safely and reliably (note: the above vid more than implies it is unsafe and unreliable), is significant skin lightening okay? Is that right? Is it anyone’s businesses but the buyers and sellers of such products and services?

Watch the news clip above. Let it spark deep thought and conversation.

‘The Mountain’ Of HBO’s “Game Of Thrones” Deadlifts 994 Pounds (Video)

Hot daaamn! We need to add another ‘superpower’ to our list on last week’s post: super-human strength. Hafþór Júlíus Björnsson (who has had two guest appearances on HBO series Game of Thrones as Gregor Clegane aka “The Mountain”), stands 6-foot-9-inches, tips the scales at 419 pounds, and is strong enough to have placed second in this year’s World’s Strongest Man Competition. In the above video, he deadlifts a whopping 994 pounds at the 2014 Arnold Strongman Classic.

Vinyl Destination | Ep. 11 ‘Give The Drummer Some’ On Season 2 With The Magnificent DJ Jazzy Jeff (Video)

In this episode of Vinyl Destination, DJ Jazzy Jeff and his crew ‘have a Cali week’ in Los Angeles. Jeff links up with drummer Travis Barker to talk about the possibility of doing a show. They chat about gear and do a DJ/Drummer jam session. Got into a lot for what was to be a laid back time. Eventually got over to the grocery store to shop to make a ‘Magnificent Meal’ – and leave a full fridge (like Jeff says a good house guest should) – while staying at the home of comedian buddy Russell Peters (see him in this prior episode here)) while in town. A show in San Diego, then flying out to UK for a day, then back stateside for another show in Vegas the day after… whew! A chill week, then back on the grind like a mutha—-!

Nice soundtracking in the back[ground] in this episode (contributions from Dayne Jordan).

Chicago: Landmark Overlook Glass Ledge Suddenly Cracks, Startling Tourists (Video)

Friends of mine who’ve been to Chicago (Illinois, USA) say going out onto the glass ledge on Willis Tower’s Observation Deck – and looking out and down on the cityscape – is a ‘must do’ item for your bucket list. Well, I am going to leave that to them; especially after hearing about the ledge’s cracking as tourists were on it.

Cracked? Oh… heyull naaawww! But wait, wait. Architectural engineer Michael Swanberg said

“Because you can see through it, obviously there’s the psychological effect that ‘oh my gosh, something broke.’ But nobody was ever in danger.”

See (above), nothing to worry about. They even replaced that glass that cracked. So, y’all can feel safe going back out onto the ledge when you go to Chi-town. Cool.

Oh…Me? When am I going? How ’bout NEVERary the 32nd? Ha! I wasn’t ever going to step out there in the first place; even when the ledge was “totally safe.” But you tell me how fun it was, okay?

VICE: Corruption, Cocaine, & Murder in Trinidad (Video)

VICE News visited the slums of Port of Spain and spoke with police, activists, community leaders, and gangsters to understand the country’s decade-plus spike in killings [more than tripling over the past 15 years]. Many of the murders are attributed to ruthless and politically connected street gangs who control territories that are sometimes no larger than a city block. The gangs fight over lucrative government contracts meant to provide social services and combat unemployment.

But gang violence is just where the problems start. Trinidad has become an important stop for drugs headed to West Africa and the United States. The “big fish” keeping and growing the country into a mega narco-state — the political and business elite.

Vinyl Destination | Ep. 9 ‘Kid Cudi Bath Time Music’ On Season 2 With The Magnificent DJ Jazzy Jeff (Video)

Nasty Nas Milkshake…” “…This milkshake is CRAZY!”

RESPECT to Vinyl Destination’s production crew for dropping in that “Room Test” by Dayne Jordan (fi-yah!) into this Episode 9 soundtrack right from the jump!

(Oh, and don’t think we missed Episode 8… it’s after the jump, mickey fickeys!)

DJ Jazzy Jeff, Skillz and the crew on to the next one… on to the next one… on their European tour. Manchester. Brussels. Zurich. Several destinations for this episode of Vinyl Destination. Fine and good… but this travel situation is kinda eff’d up (good shake though). Truth: Touring is not always first class travel and 5 star meals. Work life on the road. But a warm bath while listening to some Kid Cudi makes it all better, of course (wait, what?).

Monks Breakdance Honoring The Memory Of Beastie Boys’ MCA (Video)

In advance of the 3rd annual MCA Day (May 3, 2014), four men dressed in Tibetan garb pay physical tribute to the late, great emcee Adam “MCA” Yauch of the Beastie Boys (while “Ch-Check It Out” plays in the background). MCA was a devout Tibetan Buddhist, and creator of the Free Tibet concert series. So, this feels more than right.

Fresh Off the Boat With Eddie Huang: Chengdu (Video)

Part 1, Fresh Off The Boat in Chengdu, Eddie (a.k.a. the Human Panda) is at home with his ‘interracial’ fam (e.g. black and white pandas). Talking about and watching pandas. Don’t forget about the panda porn, either (what? yeah). Trekking Chengdu with Eddie and DJ SuperBestFriend (a.k.a. Rabbi), we experience traditions, food and culture… much of which is diminishing as time passes. After the jump, part 2 picks up with Eddie enjoying the fine Chinese living – chilling in the Dead Sea Resort, taking a refreshing salt burial, a dip in a big (translation: crowded) swimming pool, and later tasting on some baby pig penis (what? yeah). Then part 3 wraps with an exploration of Chengdu culture going forward: a look at Szechuan cooking from a master chef, a visit to the sculpture factory of a feature artist, a climb into a tree-house parlor for Taiwanese tea, and a round table discussion with different generations of Chinese to discuss cultural preservation as China moves forward and becomes open to the rest of the world.

Fantastic episode! Well worth the watch, as usual.

The Top 5 Strip Clubs In Atlanta According To Waka Flocka (Video)

His list is very interesting because I’d have to agree with about 90% of what he said except the food part because I rarely order food at strip clubs. I found it funny he put Follies at number one because I find myself in Follies more often than any other spot in the city lately. Me & some friends used to go to Follies alot before most people even really knew about it, but things have changed in 2014.

VICE: Jamaican Herb Business (Video)

Hold the phone. Marjuana is still illegal in Jamaica.

That may well change though, as Western powers pressured the island nation to tamp down production and export of its cultural crop are now reconsidering their stances on ganja en masse. At the forefront of stirring change for the country: Jamaica’s first medicinal marijuana company, Medicanja, launched this year against a backdrop of reinvigorated debate around ganja law reform among leading policymakers. Renowned Jamaican scientist Dr. Henry Lowe, a leader in THC studies for medical purposes, is running the company, with the University of West Indies and the University of Technology jointly funding the facility. Dr. Lowe says the company will be studying the scientific benefits of marijuana and producing CBD-based medical products, which fall under legally accepted medicinal use of the ganja plant. Lowe says the plant extract can be used to treat psychosis and severe pain, as well as mid-life crises in men.

VICE: Kingdom Of The Little People (Video)

Annette Lamothe-Ramos of The VICE Guide to Travel takes us to and on tour of the controversial theme park, Kingdom of the Little People.

In a land far, far away, love flourishes in a kingdom quite unlike any other. In mushroom-shaped homes and old dormitories, a community of dwarfs—all less than 51 inches tall—can be found singing, dancing, and performing on a daily basis for visiting tourists.
