The Return Of The Black Death (Documentary)
In the minds of most Westerners, still, the Black Plague triggers thoughts of history lessons, or of movies about the Middle Ages. This is not a modern era illness we face. To oversimplify, the Black Death is supposed to be dead. Well, with recent mainstream reporting about a third world outbreak – and a public health scare as two victims returned to Atlanta (Georgia, USA) for treatment – the West likely experienced a mental software upgrade that re-ranked the disease much higher among the threats to health and chances of survival. However, as is oft the case for mainstream media, another shiny new story came up, and another (Ray Rice, U.S.-led airstrikes…whatever, take your pick); and Western reporters moved on to the next one…on to the next one. But not VICE. This is where VICE lives: Embedded in the hottest areas of stories too dangerous AND too low on the ‘this just in’ scale of current events for big-budget reporting outfits to care about; usually in faraway places and affecting people who are to far removed from ‘us’ to care about. THAT is why we f#ck with VICE: Because as a noble reporting institution that could do otherwise, it consistently chooses to find and stay on the stories that thinking and feeling people would indeed care about (or care about longer) if they were told and kept fully informed about them. Like this Black Death that the mainstream news (liberal and conservative leaning) thinks is ‘dead’ (e.g. a dead story). It is still VERY much alive. And not knowing and keeping up with it could still get lots and lots of us KILLED.
VICE gives a detailed, two-part documentary report and writeup. Watch, starting with part 1 above. Follow the link to read more below; and hit the jump for part 2. Get this knowledge in you like medicine! Folks and the media think the ‘curing’ of two folks in the ATL is a triumph over what could be considered a ‘scary outbreak that happened over there.’ Nah, maaan. This thing could hit a city! Thousands to millions of people at risk. Maybe that’d make it ‘big’ enough to get outbreak coverage again but… as the VICE report adeptly put it: “[H]istory has taught us, by the time there are enough people with the plague to classify it as an “outbreak,†it’s already too late.”
Vinyl Destination | Ep. 19 “Delirious” On Season 2 With The Magnificent DJ Jazzy Jeff (Video)
Guard your nuts.
– DJ Jazzy Jeff
Whew! Can we call the last leg of the European tour a wrap already? The guys are worn out – delirious with hunger and fatigue. Almost there though fellas. Three days. But… three days is time enough to get in some serious club jams, traffic jams, airport jams… all starting with the crew jammed into tiny cabs to make their way through Manchester UK the to the first gig in the ep. Real 90s Hip-Hop party in store for the locals. Just for starters. Hit play above for the rest. Hit the jump for some snaps from the clip. Go!
(Heard that Dayne Jordan jawn “All About The Art” in there, didn’t you? Yeaaah ya did. Got that for you here.)
VICE Presents The Somali Pirates’ Perspective In ‘Fishing Without Nets’ (Trailer)
Okay, “Captain Phillips” you’ve had your say. And, it was a complex story. But the points of view, the heroes and victims, even the nature of the struggle… well, let’s just leave it peace by saying ‘things were askew’ for whatever reasons. Don’t retell your story though. It’s good. Here’s another for your consideration thoughtful movie watchers: “Fishing Without Nets” comes from the pirates’ perspective.
Watch the trailer above. Learn more about the movie, showings schedule, and more at the movie’s VICE Films site (here). And if you are in the Atlanta area, it’ll be on screen at The Plaza Theater (1049 Ponce De Leon Avenue Northeast), Thursday, October 9, 2014, at 9:30 PM EST. Ticketing and more show info on that here.
Dayne Jordan – ‘LOST’ featuring Ebony Joi (Prod. By DJ Jazzy Jeff x James Poyser) [Video]
Can’t noooobody say Dayne don’t keep it Philly! He lassoed the fellow Philadelphans DJ Jazzy Jeff and James Poyser (of The Roots) for the production AND R&B singer Ebony Joi to do the honors on this beautiful track. I got wind of this from Dayne Jordan himself. He let me know he released a new song…“LOST.” I checked for it on his site. Boom. Doooope!
Shot the video (above) in Azerbaijan? Yeah, Dayne does world travel. Keeping it Philly doesn’t mean not getting your passport stamped.
Time ain’t money, and money ain’t time.
Truth. When money is lost, it ain’t hard to find.
– Dayne Jordan
Message! Folks listen. This is the time. This is your life. Make it the time of your life. Now, the grind is the grind; and it will wear you down. And money is a LOUSY way to keep score in the game of life. Instead living to make millions (stay out the trap!), just live! Live your passion (not for your pockets), and win! When Ebony sings ‘there’s no place there for you…get away from there soon…’ it is real! Poverty had Dayne this close to choosing to chase cash instead of his dreams. Then where would he have ended up? Likely where broken people go to die; NOWHERE (the hell where broken spirits spend eternity)! Nah. Dayne had to go. Philly emcee turned world traveler (hitting all those ‘Vinyl Destinations’ with DJ Jazzy Jeff best believe)!

Vinyl Destination | Ep. 18 “Lessons With Jazz” On Season 2 With The Magnificent DJ Jazzy Jeff (Video)
Can I ask you a question… Was it a good fade?
– DJ Ferno
DJ Ferno gets called onto the carpet (er… couch) for a DJ Jazzy Jeff post-show reprimand. Evaluations are evaluations, wherever you work, right? Nah. You probably don’t get a camera shoved in your face the whole time your boss is giving you the talkin’ to… and you don’t likely get a real opportunity to land a ‘counter’ like Ferno did. Haa! Even getting ‘dressed down’ on these Vinyl Destination eps is classic.
It’s all about IMPACT people. Remember that ya young’ns!
Keep watching though: The crew did a double in Manchester, then get over to Preston, UK. Jeff giving love to fans and they mans’n’em, meeting and greeting and signing stuff along the way. Skillz with his commentary added in. Prepare to chuckle.
(Notice how Jeff wouldn’t make the hand gesture he did not understand for the one fan’s pic. That’s not “being rude”… actually, it’s being smart… never know who you may offend, or if you are misrepresenting yourself in some way doing things like that just because someone asks. Careful people! Lots of laughs AND lessons in this episode. Enjoy!)

Kingdoms of Africa: West Africa (Documentary)
Incredible BBC Four documentary presentation. Frames West African history as an arc of time and development with timeless elements that exist in culture today as they did centuries earlier. Among the topics woven into this video are matters and practices regarding faith and worship, royalty and society, engineering and architecture, travel and trade, politics and war, and especially the arts are covered. Right from the start, the importance of the arts (including storytelling and recorded history) and craftsmanship as ways of marking time and linking present to past Africa is established.
In Benin, it seems history isn’t written by the victors. It’s written by the artists.
So much good content. Watch and digest thoroughly. This not just African history… this is world history!
People were using pottery here 8,000 years before it appeared in Great Britain… When West Africans began developing the skills that would eventually create some of the most exquisite art in the world, Europe was just emerging from the last Ice Age.
Travel: The Emirates A380 First Class Flight From Bangkok To Dubai Is Amazing (Video)
Guaranteed that you don’t know ’til you know! So, if you you are sure you know what first class air travel is… you may not want to watch. Don’t want to break a hater’s heart. But if you can handle true extravagance, click play above; and after the jump. A full bath and shower… on the plane… WHAT??!! Emirates A380 First Class flying from Bangkok to Dubai – a mind-blowing trip that may well have you tripping by the end of the clip. Even Business Class is littered with travel luxuries.
(To tell the truth, even the Lower Deck economy class seating ain’t no punk. Nice.)
Vinyl Destination | Ep. 17 “Oooh Kille’m” On Season 2 With The Magnificent DJ Jazzy Jeff (Video)
Good rest-up over the time off. Good van ride over to the hotel in England. Good sound check. Good chill time before the night’s show. Oh, speaking of chill… damn it got cold, right Steve? Bwaahahaa. All in all, no tripping just good times before, up to, and through the party set for this episode of Vinyl Solution. Until the crew gets stuck in the elevator…
We gotta draw straws to see who we gone eat…
– DJ Jazzy Jeff
Uh oh. Drama begins. The fellas get out, but it don’t stop. After the party it the after party NO! It’s a mad dash back to pack and load into the van, to dash over to another show in Ireland (Cork; where Jeff and Skillz kille’m every time with that “Jump Around” apparently), then catch a flight, to do back-shows after that (Bristol, then Manchester).
You probably recognize the work of one Dayne Jordan on the episode’s soundtrack; some of the cuts posted here on the site. Dope,
Enjoy the ep.
Big Men (Documentary)
Now, this is long enough a film to be called an epic saga… but it’s real life. And it keeps happening to us. “Big Men” takes us into the high-powered world of African oil deals – money, power, but the respect… that’s limited. The lens the filmmakers use – the telling of a couple of stories about countries at different levels in the oil game at the time: Ghana and Nigeria. The main story is an insider’s inside view of Dallas-based oil company Kosmos Energy and its partners developing the first commercial oil field in Ghana’s history (between 2007 and 2011). In parallel, the documentary covers an angle of the oil story in Nigeria’s Niger Delta: a militant gang trying to profit off oil in many and any ways…holding that they must do it because the prosperity promised the region’s people hasn’t come after all these years. Very telling of Ghana’s future in the industry.
It’s a shame. Same damn story. Outsiders find a rare resource in Africa. They seek to exploit it for profit. They know the venture will be dangerous and risky to the native people and to themselves. But that’s okay in capitalist pursuits; shared risk, shared rewards, right? But then the money comes, and there is just never enough to do the right thing, is there? And you know, even that might be okay, if everyone wins and loses sometime… but that is NEVER the case. Corrupt government and politicians ALWAYS win; partnering with the oil companies who always win. The people who scrape by, legally or illegally, win small if ever. And the every day person ALWAYS loses. And it’s always Africa. And it is always apparent right from the start.
Watch.
In the Ghana story. Man. They were burning $2 Billion of oil … a day … and they are just ‘testing’ the field? Wowwww… Extracting oil from Ghana was not only being done in a less-than-equitable way; it was WASTEFUL and was putting toxins in the air to no one’s benefit. Well, at least to start; as Kosmos Energy and its stakeholders looked to make many more billions once pumping begins in earnest. Guaranteed it doesn’t get better for the people from that point.
Debiltating Mystery Disorder: 8-Year-Old Boy’s Gigantic Hands (Video)
And still he finds a way to flash that incredible smile. Watch above. It’s heart-wrenching, and yet, eight-year-old Kaleem and his family find a way to keep it moving. On top of stifling poverty and poor living conditions, Kaleem has been saddled with a rare disorder (so rare doctors don’t even have a name for it) that has caused his hands to grow well out of proportion. Each hand is over 13 inches in length and weighs in excess of eight kilograms (over 17 pounds). His unnamed disability keeps him from going to school (as he would make other students uncomfortable) or even feeding himself. An unfortunate condition, and Kaleem’s parents can nowhere near afford any treatment. Please watch this video, and realize that Kaleem could have been you… or your baby. Reflection brings perspective.
The 2015 Lamborghini Huracan (Video)
The latest supercar from the Italian racing house is being made ready for the world to have a seat and take a spin; though Stephan Winkelmann (Lamborghini President & CEO) made no bones about America being the target market for this decadent driving machine in the above video. Feast your eyes on some audio bling, folks…The 2015 Lamborghini Huracan.

VICE: Teenage Bullfighters (Video)
Okay, let’s address the elephant bull in the room right from the start… that outfit… Those are some really pink stockings, tight pants, and a lot of bling. Huge attendance when this young man performs live in arenas. Hmmm…Maybe some label should sign this kid to rap in the States.
Kidding, kidding (MESSAGE!)
But this kid not just talking tough, he’s walking the talk. Been about that life, as was his father. That life, in this case, is the exhibition of glorified violence known worldwide as bullfighting. By age 14 this kid, Michelito Lagravere, was officially recognized as the youngest bullfighter ever.
For this episode of Profiles by VICE, we went to Merida, on Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula, to meet this young bullfighter, his parents, and his younger brother André “El Galo,” who is poised to follow in his brother’s footsteps. The Lagravere brothers are destined for greatness in an old (and questionable) Mexican tradition.
VICE comes at this story from a few angles to give us insight. Par for the course when it comes to their documentaries. Always interesting to watch and learn.
VICE: New Ebola Outbreak In Liberia (Video)
“Ebola is one of those words. You can say it anywhere in the world; and it evokes fear.”
– Dr. Joseph Fair
This is real life; not a Dustin Hoffman movie. West Africa is being plagued by a new outbreak of Ebola—a. Victims bleed to death from the inside out. There is no cure, and the epidemic is spreading fast.
VICE News is on it, to arm us… with information. Being informed and aware are critical at this stage. VICE News went to Liberia, where many feel the outbreak began. Western scientists feel that the preparation and consumption of meat from monkeys, fruit bats, and other forest animals – collectively referred to as bush meat – is behind the disease transmission. If left uncontrolled, Ebola, Ebola—a or a similar disease could kill a third of the world’s population.
