Uganda’s Kung Fu Child TV Stars (Video)

It’s called “Ugawood” (composite word, combining Uganda and Hollywood); and Ugawood loves the kids. Or at least that is how filmmakers in the country and region are trying to make it. The news clip relates a story of kids who are learning Kung Fu; to play action stars in movies made there. A beneficial secondary outcome: the kids’ learning discipline (probably a good thing for kid stars in the West to pick up, huh?).

Social Experiment: Jasirah Demonstrates Blind Faith In Humanity (Video)

Look at this.

Blindfolded, Jasirah Bin Hitam is an Aboriginal Australian who decided to put her faith in humanity; specifically, the humans from outside her culture who have traditionally be less-than-kind to her kind. Filmed at Cottesloe Beach, Jasirah stood with open arms and offered the ultimate and most basic act of acceptance and universal care for another…a hug.

Even if it’s no big deal to you, think of how big a deal it is in a place where people think it’s a big enough thing to film it. Big enough to reach 200k viral within hours.

“The video is creating important conversation about attitudes toward Aboriginal Australians,” said ICEA [Indigenous Communities Education and Awareness] founder and CEO Lockie Cooke. “It’s so powerful to have created something that has been so popular in our community, which inspires us to continue the work we’ve been doing in the reconciliation space. The way in which the video has been embraced shows that ICEA’s froth is strong and our message, mutual respect for all Australians, is important and relevant to our society.”

Creating positive shared experiences, building enduring relationships and promoting cultural understanding – that’s ICEA, that’s Jasirah Bin Hitam hugging folks on a beach… and that’s pretty damn cool.

Europe Or Die: Documentary (Video)

Wowwww… and we’re thinking we have immigration issues in the U.S.? Check out this “Europe Or Die” docu-series VICE put together.

Since 2000, more than 27,000 migrants and refugees have died attempting the perilous journey to Europe. With an unprecedented number of people breaking through its heavily barricaded borders in 2014, the EU continues to fortify its frontiers.

VICE News presents Europe or Die, a new four-part series that documents the efforts of those risking their lives to reach Europe, and the forces tasked to keep them out.

In episode one of our series [above], VICE News correspondent Milène Larsson travels to the border between Morocco and Spain, where West Africans in their thousands storm the razor-wire-clad fences. Many are beaten back by border police or illegally returned.

Episodes 2, 3, and 4 follow; after the jump.

Swedish Cops Actions Reflect A Model For Professional Restraint (Video)

Proud American. Proud Alabamian. Native of Tuskegee. If you got jokes, go on and let them fly. Okay, while they’re yammering, please watch the above video and let me speak on this.

This clip exemplifies what it means to be a PEACE officer; not an officer with a piece. Like everyone else contributing to this visual going viral, what I applaud is the COURAGE these PROFESSIONALS exhibited; putting themselves IN DANGER when (as visitors) they could have remained bystanders… AND how they CHOSE to employ TRAINING, JUDGEMENT, and CARE… to PROTECT and SERVE everyone on the train (including the two fighting).

Now, I have not mentioned nationality yet. The above emphasized traits are those we hope peace officers worldwide would universally apply. Hopefully, police exhibit such traits regularly in Sweden. I don’t know. Hopefully, their citizenry appreciates law enforcement behavior norms like those in the clip as we would. That said, I have no beef with police; yet I still find myself scared at times that they may ‘find’ beef with me or my folks. Hopefully, the model behavior shown above fuels our desire to find, and make viral, images of our TRAINED PROFESSIONALS using JUDGEMENT and CARE as they PROTECT and SERVE us. And if those clips are too rare to be found and made to go viral… Hopefully, we will DISCOVER what it will take to make it so us witnessing good cop behavior is not so rare.

Look. I want responsible caring police professionals ready to serve in my community. Yes, I do. Admittedly, I am not sure that is the case in a lot of cases right now; but I really want it to be. Yes, I do. I believe this is possible. Do you?

Let’s discuss. Tweet me or leave a comment.

MMA: The Underground Fighters Of Cuba (Video)

Fighting mixed martial arts in Cuba is not easy. Not just because MMA is demanding, or that life in Cuba is hard in many ways in general. It’s also hard because the fight is not just with the in-ring opponent; it’s with the government.

The Cuban government hasn’t legalized MMA for fear of losing its best boxers, so the fighters on coach Evelio Padron Ferrier’s team wrestle on concrete floors, use the ocean for endurance training, and practice techniques pulled from memory and bootlegged DVDs.

Nothing goes in or out of Cuba without facing obstacles. Freestyle fighting is no exception. Want to know more though? Follow VICE Fightland in to the den then.

Kids With Guns: The UK’s Army Cadet Force (Documentary)

Damn. Talk about the Boy Scouts on steroids… Check out this episode of VICE’s Rule Britannia. It covers the UK’s Army Cadet Force, exploring what the unique youth club might do for the nation’s at-risk youth.

The Army Cadet Force has over 46,000 cadets from the ages of 12 to 18, training in 1,700 detachments all over the country. The super low-cost club evenings and training camps equip teenagers with discipline and skills in everything from orienteering and military knowledge to weaponry, first aid, and sports.

The theory that cadet activities – all with Queen and Country in mind – could keep youth on the right track has drawn lots of interest and funding from the government. The growing investment should grow the program by leaps and bounds next year.

VICE: Subtropical Solitude (Video)

Something very deep about this piece. Must say, too, there is something very deep about the peace Mr. Nagasaki has found. Just saying.

78-year-old Masafumi Nagasaki is the sole resident of a tropical island located at the southern tip of Okinawa, Japan. He would rather obey the demands of nature than of another person, which is what led him to escape civilization and live on Sotobanari Island. Meet Danny Lambo: Britain’s Flashiest Playboy (Video)

Like Bruce Wayne without the dangerous hobbies to cover the cape-and-cowl nightlife. Danny Karne of Croydon (Britain) is living a life that you could scarcely believe, even if you read it in a comic (or watched it in the movie made from the comic). Since some folks cannot help but hate the player and the game, let’s enumerate the things for you to hate.

At 16, Danny dropped out of school… to link up with a Japanese music producer and pursue a singing career.
Far from home, Danny and his band hit the Far East… touring girls schools (and other spots in Asia, Australia and New Zealand).

At 21, Danny is done in the music game; a high-school dropout with no marketable skills or experience… but he knew his way around a hotel.

Keeping ties with his family (even sending all his money made from touring back home), Danny’s older sister (an interior designer) helped him buy and renovate a 30-room Paddington bed-and-breakfast into a respectable hotel.

Danny’s “respectable” hotel would soon become a celebrity must-stay destination… By 22, Danny is a millionaire hotelier.
The big bucks (pounds) came rolling in… like the extra loud Lamborghinis he loved to drive (hence the name Danny Lambo).

The ladies loved the cars, but they were too loud. Danny loved the ladies, but he loved the cars… Solution: Stay in the car, and shout out the ladies with a bullhorn (yeah, it worked)!

And it follows… laying up with Russian models and all kinds of leggy ladies, five thousand on a meal here and 10 thousand on a drink there… All the while, growing a hotel and real estate empire.

Enough? How about a Danny Lambo movie? Nah, that’d be ridiculous. But “Danny’s World” – a reality TV series – is being filmed.

(Oh… and Danny is just 37. Wowwww.)

Park And Fly: AeroMobil 3.0 Is A Real Flying Car For Real People (Video)

Keep on thinking they only have flying cars in cartoons and movies… until one flies overhead. Probably inspired by sci-fi, the AeroMobil 3.0 (made in Slovakia) is an idea that has been in development since 1989. With a max airspeed of 124 mph and max range of 430 miles (on a full tank), this flying car could make short work of daily commutes or make short vacation getaways very workable. AeroMobil’s ultimate flying machine is most ‘unreal’ in the way it is made for real people; uses regular fuel from gas stations and can be parked in regular spaces.

For real. Take a look.
