Long Live The “King Of The Monsters”… Godzilla! (Trailer)

Whoa! Looks like the modern movie-making era is finally getting it. Need to ramp up the hype to MONSTER levels WAY in ADVANCE for a potentially planet-wrecking monster movie. Godzilla, being the king of Kaiju monsters worldwide, deserves that respect and box office build-up.

Following the global success of “Godzilla” and “Kong: Skull Island” comes the next chapter in Warner Bros. Pictures’ and Legendary Pictures’ cinematic MonsterVerse, an epic action-adventure that pits Godzilla against some of the most popular monsters in pop culture history. The new story follows the heroic efforts of the crypto-zoological agency Monarch as its members face off against a battery of god-sized monsters, including the mighty Godzilla, who collides with Mothra, Rodan, and his ultimate nemesis, the three-headed King Ghidorah. When these ancient super-species—thought to be mere myths—rise again, they all vie for supremacy, leaving humanity’s very existence hanging in the balance.
– Warner Bros. Pictures

“Kong: Skull Island” was righteous. Here’s to hoping that this new “Godzilla” chapter even tops that. We’ll see NEXT summer!

“Shazam!” Will Tell The Origin Story Of DC’s Captain Marvel On The Big Screen (Trailer)

Wonder if they will work Captain Marvel (DC’s Captain Marvel, not the one over in the MCU; she’s a woman) into the Justice League… the story and the hero team… like they did in the animated “Justice League Unlimited” series on Cartoon Network back a few years ago.

New Line Cinema’s “Shazam!,” the origin story that stars Zachary Levi (TV’s “Chuck”) as the titular DC Super Hero, along with Asher Angel (TV’s “Andi Mack”) as Billy Batson, and Mark Strong (the “Kingsman” movies) in the role of Super-Villain Dr. Thaddeus Sivana.
– Warner Bros. Pictures

Seems like they are really leaning in on the middle-school kid in a grown-up superhero’s body. Nothing wrong with that. Hope it works out to be a good origin storytelling experience. We will see April 2019.

DC Universe Presents: “Titans” (Series Trailer)

One of the first series to air exclusively on DC’s upcoming streaming service, DC Universe… Here’s the series trailer for “Titans” (short for “Teen Titans”). Conspicuous by his absence on the team: Cyborg (expected though, since that character was featured prominently on the “Justice League” movie). Cyborg not being on the team will be eclipsed by Starfire’s look and outfit; barely in keeping with anything that resembles what’s in the comics. Take a look and see if you likes though.

“Titans” follows young heroes from across the DC Universe as they come of age and find belonging in a gritty take on the classic Teen Titans franchise. Pre-order now at DCUniverse.com. #DCUniverse

WHOA! Did… Did Robin grunt, “F**K Batman?” in this trailer???!!

How about making a zombie soldier project gone horribly wrong the main plotline? JJ Abrams went and did it. Not sure if we’re ready for it, but we have until November to get there. Peep the trailer.

After More Than 20 Years, “Tales From The Hood” Gets A Sequel (Trailer)

Wow! Spike Lee and the original creators are back with “Tales From The Hood”… TWO! Remember the first one, with mad creepy Mr. Simms, played by Clarence Williams III? Well, Mr. Simms is back… played by Keith David; who is acting just as creepy, just as mad, and not playing with y’all!

In the wake of the success of Jordan Peele’s “Get Out,” studios have been racing to make their own “socially aware” genre films. While most will miss the point completely, there’s one in the works that’s perfectly primed for a revival. Rusty Cundieff and Darin Scott‘s 1995 “Tales From The Hood” was hugely ahead of its time, putting an urban spin on “Tales From the Crypt” and sharing several stories in what is easily one of the best anthology films ever made. Now, 20 years later, it’s getting a much-needed sequel – on Blu-ray, DVD, Digital and On Demand on October 2, 2018.

“Tales from the Hood 2” introduces the audience to four new dreadful short tales, that follow the original film’s cult classic roots. Sparked with both humor and terror, this brand new movie is said to be filled with even more gritty social commentary and cultural subtext that will provoke and haunt viewers, while putting them on the edge of their seats.

The Story Of How Models Helped Hip-Hop Stars Make Videos That Made Money… Until The Game Changed (Trailer)

VIXEN. Simple, powerful title. Makes sense with coverage of Karrine Steffans (and her book) in this.

Saw this described elsewhere as exploring the ‘Video Vixen Era.’ Never thought of it as an era, but the MODELS (not the rappers or singers) in music videos that caught major buzz before Instagram… yeah, that’s a thing. Should make for some worthwhile watching. That, plus sexy women…

Melyssa Ford, Buffie The Body, Karrine Steffans and more video vixens write themselves back into Hip-Hop history in this BET Original Documentary.

Storm Reid & Common Help Tell An Uncommon Story In “A Happening of Monumental Proportions” (Trailer)

The plotline aside, the cast attached to the story that Storm Reid and Common are set to tell…Wow. Just saying, the Happening of having to do a school Career Day talk having just LOST the job; all by itself is good film fodder. But that is nowhere near all the hijinx driving this comedy! Then toss in actors ranging from Jennifer Garner to Rob Riggle to Keanu Reeves??

Watch the trailer. Get ready to chomp popcorn and chuckle for a while.

A Societal How-To For People Of Color: Watch “The Melanin Code” (Documentary)

Yessir. This knowledge is needed! Forty acres and a mule just will not do. People of color in America need generational wealth. Watch “The Melanin Code” and let’s learn to organize and get that. Trailer above. Link to the documentary (on demand) below.

How is it possible to thrive when history has shown that for over 300 years, where there have been steps taken to divide melanated people mentally? The answer is simple. We need to start over from scratch and go back to the basics. We need a Code of Conduct. We need an Instructional Video.

Yes, an Instructional Video that covers all areas of activity:

Economics
Education
Entertainment
Law
Labor
Politics
Religion
Sex
War

This is a “Solutions-Based” film. The diverse cast of business owners, financial experts, religious figures, well-known activists, educators, politicians and even members of the police force will identify the problems within our race, and will present solutions.

Announcing The Commencement Of ‘The First Purge’ (Trailer)

This prequel is the story of how The Purge got started. Anyone notice drug-dealer-turned-resistance-leader Dmitri is played by Y’Lan Noel (from Issa Rae’s HBO series “Insecure”)? Cool, right?

The First Purge is doing something rare for horror franchises this deep in their run. Instead of playing it safe, it builds on the socio-political commentary from Election Year to drive home the ramifications of a government-sponsored extermination of marginalized peoples by the wealthy elite. And with our current combustible political climate, the franchise will continue to have ample material to evolve and reinvent a dystopian world that far too often hits close to home.
Ismael Abdusalaam, Imprintent.org

Interesting continuation of The Purge series’ violence-with-conscious-points. It’s out now. Go!

“The Hate U Give” Shows How Hard It Is To Do Right When It All Goes Wrong (Trailer)

Halfway through watching this, you might have your mind made up as to whether or not Starr (with two r’s) should speak up… but keep watching. You KNOW it is not that cut-and-dry, and this trailer bears that out. Looks like a good flick to catch. In Theaters October 19, 2018.

Starr Carter is constantly switching between two worlds: the poor, mostly Black, neighborhood where she lives and the rich, mostly white, prep school she attends. The uneasy balance between these worlds is shattered when Starr witnesses the fatal shooting of her childhood best friend Khalil at the hands of a police officer. Now, facing pressures from all sides of the community, Starr must find her voice and stand up for what’s right. Action-Thriller “The Predator” Gets A Proper Reboot (Trailer)

In theaters on September 14, 2018, expect to hear some hollering at screens; the good, excited fan kind. Seen some lameness in the extensions of Schwarzenegger’s classic, but this one looks like the one that will allow us to collectively hit the reset button and forget about those ‘others.’

From the outer reaches of space to the small-town streets of suburbia, the hunt comes home in Shane Black’s explosive reinvention of the Predator series. Now, the universe’s most lethal hunters are stronger, smarter and deadlier than ever before, having genetically upgraded themselves with DNA from other species. When a young boy accidentally triggers their return to Earth, only a ragtag crew of ex-soldiers and a disgruntled science teacher can prevent the end of the human race.
– 20th Century Fox

And Sterling K. Brown striking while that iron is still hot. And Keegan-Michael Key in there (because why let his partner Jordan Peele grab up all the movie review column space). Ha!

Got comedic actor Danny McBride and the producer of “Get Out” attached… plus the classic film’s OG Jamie Lee Curtis in there.

“Creed II” Is About Way More Than Boxing (Trailer)

So we’re doing this. Saw some scuttlebutt and doctored clips claiming to be ‘trailers’ before, but this comes from the star himself (Michael B. Jordan aka RIP Killmonger). Official.

What If Your Best Friend Might Be The Cause Of You Going Back To Prison? (Trailer)

Wow! Two things about this “Blindspotting” trailer stand out.

One, while most would expect that you are ‘innocent until proven guilty’ the default position felons on parole are put in is one where they must continually prove that they are innocent. Imagine that (some don’t even have to ‘imagine’): Having to self-check EVERY move to ensure that it ‘looks’ pure & innocent.

And two, remembering when Dave Chappelle said “that White guy hanging with the Black crew” is the most dangerous dude because there is no telling what he’s done to ‘earn respect’… That’s the dude Miles in this flick. Bet big money on that. He is big trouble.
