Gabrielle Union & Jessica Alba Are “L.A.’s Finest” (Series Trailer)
Interesting that this will be on Charter, a cable platform. Word on the Interwebs is that the pilot for this “Bad Boys” spinoff-for-TV series was passed on by NBC (which is owned by Comcast, a huge Charter competitor) first. Let’s see if ‘little bank’ can take from ‘big bank’ on this occasion.
Looks like a dope trailer, setting up ‘Syd’ (Gabrielle Union reprising her role as Martin Lawrence’s character’s sister from “Bad Boys II”) as the centerpiece for some good storytelling on the small screen.
From the universe of the Jerry Bruckheimer/Michael Bay “Bad Boys†franchise, “L.A.’s Finest” follows Syd Burnett (Gabrielle Union), last seen in Miami taking down a drug cartel, who has seemingly left her complicated past behind to become an LAPD detective. Paired with a new partner, Nancy McKenna (Jessica Alba), a working mom with an equally complex history, Syd is forced to confront how her unapologetic lifestyle may be masking a greater personal secret. Taking on the most dangerous criminals in Los Angeles while skirting the rules, and speed limits, Syd and Nancy become a force to be reckoned with – on the streets, and in each other’s lives.
The first three installments in the 13-episode series will be exclusively available to Spectrum video subscribers free On Demand (and without ads) on May 13, after which new episodes will release every Monday until the finale.

Throwback/History: Nikki Giovanni Interviews James Baldwin (November 1971) [Video]
The world does it to you long enough and effectively enough… You begin to do it to yourself. You become a collaborator, an accomplice of your own murderers…
Just reading the title, you must know that the convo here is about to get deep-deep-DEEPER in depth. Even the context of this clip is deep. Nikki Giovanni, at this point in her life, is interviewing an idol of hers (James Baldwin). And before the talk really gets started, her idol declares that he is PROUD of her… that he needs and depends on her.
If only we strived to live to make our forerunners proud; for them to be able to truly pass the baton to us and trust that the race will continue to be well run… WHEW!! #Chills #NoChill #BlackHistoryMonth
Original video from SOUL! and then shoutfactorytv. All rights and love to Soul! and shoutfactorytv for broadcasting this. Taped in London, November 1971.
Yolande Cornelia “Nikki” Giovanni, Jr. (born June 7, 1943) is an American poet, writer, commentator, activist, and educator. Giovanni gained initial fame in the late 1960s as one of the foremost authors of the Black Arts Movement. Influenced by the Civil Rights Movement and Black Power Movement of the period, her early work provides a strong, militant African-American perspective, leading one writer to dub her the “Poet of the Black Revolution.”
James Arthur Baldwin (August 2, 1924 – December 1, 1987) was an American novelist and social critic. His essays, as collected in Notes of a Native Son (1955), explore intricacies of racial, sexual, and class distinctions in Western societies, most notably in mid-20th-century America. Some of Baldwin’s essays are book-length, including The Fire Next Time (1963), No Name in the Street (1972), and The Devil Finds Work (1976). An unfinished manuscript, Remember This House, was expanded and adapted for cinema as the Academy Award-nominated documentary film I Am Not Your Negro.
Baldwin’s novels and plays fictionalize fundamental personal questions and dilemmas amid complex social and psychological pressures thwarting the equitable integration of not only African Americans, but also gay and bisexual men, while depicting some internalized obstacles to such individuals’ quests for acceptance. Such dynamics are prominent in Baldwin’s second novel, Giovanni’s Room, written in 1956, well before the gay liberation movement.
Soul! or SOUL! (1967–1971 or 1967–1973) was a pioneering performance/variety television program in the late 1960s and early 1970s produced by New York City PBS affiliate, WNET. It showcased African American music, dance, and literature.
Ellis Haizlip was born on September 17, 1929 (to January 25, 1991). He was a pioneering broadcaster, television host, theater and television producer, and cultural activist. Often host of Soul!

Jeffrey Wright Narates This Ad For A Product Named In Honor Of ‘The Greatest Whiskey Maker The World Never Knew’ (Video)
Okay, so there will be at least ONE commercial that is a must-watch on Super Bowl Sunday – this one for Uncle Nearest Premium Whiskey. This new whiskey is named for the slave, Nathan Green aka Uncle Nearest, who taught Jack Daniel how to make whiskey (*record scratches*). Yeah. That’s right. That Jack Daniel.
What happens when everything we know about something changes?
This is “The Why,†our first national TV campaign to debut following Super Bowl LIII on “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert†Post-Super Bowl Special. The people you see are Uncle Nearest team members and their passion and words are 100% unscripted.
This is what sets us apart.

Snitch Cop: Money Is a Powerful Motivator (Video)
Even though it’s like a promo trailer for his standup special (“No One Loves You”), it’s good we did not get wind of this clip until AFTER the Roy Wood, Jr.’s show on Comedy Central. The gig was hilarious on its own; just like this video.
The “Wu-Tang Clan: Of Mics and Men” Documentary Comes To Showtime This Spring (Trailer)
ShoDocs is a good look for the Wu. A mini-series telling of a story all the heads want to hear – on the history of one of Hip-Hop’s most influential crews ever.
Showtime Documentary Films dives deeper into the music documentary space with Wu-Tang Clan: Of Mics and Men, a four-part limited docuseries from filmmaker Sacha Jenkins (BURN MOTHERF*CKER, BURN!) that transcends the music documentary genre by creating a new lane that merges music, socio-cultural commentary and intimate family portrait.
Regina King Speaks On Being Grateful For The Gifts And Awards She Has Received (Video)
Mm mm mm. Regina King is still fine as wine! Wow. Glad she is getting even more recognition for excellence at her craft and well wishes from fans. But see, I’m kinda salty now.
Truth is, I have been crushing on Regina for most of my life… and she’s been saving that love for Sam Elliott? Sam Elliott?? Well, if she’s gonna throw ‘Road House’ in the argument, I have to understand. I was just watching that movie for the umpteenth time a couple of days ago. Still bitter though. And now I hear his voice from that loading dock fight scene (here) in my head saying, “Hot damn that hurts doesn’t it,” as I imagine him kanoodling with my sweetie Regina…
(Nah, I did not take that fantasy-into-regret moment too far at all, did I? Hahahaaa!)
Regina talks about her success during this awards season for her film ‘If Beale Street Could Talk,’ giving acceptance speeches, meeting her celebrity crush at the Golden Globes, and what she did for her birthday.

The Grimes Gang Faces A ‘New Enemy’ On ‘The Walking Dead’ In 2019 (Trailer)
Well, it’s not really the Grimes Gang anymore, is it?
#NoSpoilers
Have you been keeping up with AMC’s series ‘The Walking Dead’ lately? Get your binging in before it returns with new episodes in February 2019 if you have not. It is still compelling television.
The storyline took a turn I kinda figured it would eventually, but not like this. Not like this…
And isn’t that why shows of this caliber are friggin awesome?? Because even the expected is delivered in an unexpected way.
A couple of weeks and TWD is back at it. One question though: WTF is Negan doing at…

Marshawn Lynch Is ‘The Most Interesting Man’ On Real Time With Bill Maher (Video)
Did you catch Beast Mode on Bill Maher’s show last weekend? We know he does not speak much, esp. not to the press. But he made some memorable TV that night. Watch his segment. Speaking from the heart about President Trump, marijuana, and more.
Raiders running back and Beast Mode inspiration Marshawn Lynch responds to a Trumpian insult and addresses the NFL’s restrictions on its players.

Jeffrey Wright Stars In HBO’s New Prison Drama “O.G.” (Trailer)
Been following (Jeffrey Wright) since ‘Boardwalk Empire’ days. This one right here. If it got any realer, it’d be a documentary. Realistic, accomplished actors alongside real inmates who are ‘acting’ (because HBO) but not ‘playing,’ filmed in a real prison.
O.G. follows Louis (Jeffrey Wright) a maximum-security prison inmate whose impending release is upended when he takes a new arrival under his wing. Starring Jeffrey Wright, Theothus Carter and William Fichtner. O.G. premieres February 23 at 10PM.
– HBO
And the trailer looks to tease a series that addresses very complex issues: Like when the lady tells Louis (Wright) that she believed he should stay imprisoned for life, even if she believed he was remorseful or reformed. Can a prison system truly reform the incarcerated? If so, is that justice for their victims or loved ones? For society? What about justice/protections/respect for inmates who serve?
This should be good.
Federal Workers Speak On How it Feels to Be Shut Down (Video)
Backs up against the wall, employed but not gainfully, this clip is representative of the employees and contractors NOT getting paid while President Trump and Congress are at a standstill over the Wall.
Okay. Actually, most everyone else in the situation (other Repubs and Dems in the Senate) are in agreement… at least to the extent we could reopen the government coffers and get these folks paychecks flowing again in the short-term. Now. It. Is. Just. Trump. President Trump. Alone. Standing on his Wall (um… slats… um, whatever)!
All the while. These people’s lives are in limbo. VICE reports (in the short above).

Daniel Radcliffe & Steve Buscemi Star In The Series “Miracle Workers” On TBS (Video)
Of all the people I would have cast as ‘God’ on TV, Steve Buscemi wouldn’t even come to mind. But seeing this trailer… I think it just might work!
Miracle Workers premieres February 12 at 10:30/9:30c on TBS. The Heaven-set workplace comedy is based on Simon Rich’s book What In God’s Name and stars Daniel Radcliffe, Steve Buscemi, Geraldine Viswanathan, and Karan Soni.

Black Thought – “Conception†feat. Salaam Remi (Live Performance) [Video]
Home field advantage for Black Thought to do a live performance of his “Conception” joint on ‘The Tonight Show’… with The Roots being the house band for Jimmy Fallon and all. That said, it is still a hella banging set!
(And Thought broke out into the Marvin Gaye riff at the end. DOPE!)

Eric Bischoff’s TEDxNaperville Talk On ‘The News Mimicking Pro Wrestling’ (Video)
Hang on through the beginning, speaker Eric Bischoff has some points to make. But like all good ‘sports entertainment’ there is a setup before the ‘real’ match gets started. And watch for the ‘swerve.’
Yes. The news is more like ‘rasslin than we thought. Let Eric explain.
Professional Wrestling and Political News Media have become the ultimate tag team, both utilizing the exact same techniques and formula’s for a very specific outcome. And the outcome is not what you think it is… In 1991, Turner Broadcasting’s World Championship Wrestling (WCW) recruited Eric as an on-camera talent. His entrepreneurial instincts and interests quickly propelled him from talent through the corporate ranks to become WCW’s President in 1998. Before leaving Turner Broadcasting in 1999, Eric had established WCW as the leader in the sports/entertainment category and is largely credited for re-inventing the professional wrestling genre. Eric also created the New World Order (nWo) brand for the TNT Network and was responsible for growing licensing, merchandising, pay-per-view, and live event business units by more than $325M. In 2002, he joining longtime competitor Vince McMahon to be an on-air character on the highly successful USA Network Series “RAWâ€.

Unsung: Brand Nubian (Full Episode)
Man. Don’t let it go to your head… noooo.
Now, this is heady episode of ‘Unsung’ so expect a couple of damn-I-had-no-idea moments (pretty much standard for ‘Unsung’). Might bring back Golden Era sweet memories, but it wasn’t all sweet. Check out the Brand Nubian story above.
Anderson .Paak – “Anywhere” (Live Performance) [Video]
If you saw ‘The Daily Show’ with .Paak on it you will get why Trevor Noah was speechless. Ha! But this performance was dope on that level regardless.
(The crowd certainly was not ‘speechless.’)

You know it didn’t start or stop with Eddie Levert or his sons, right? Of course, you did. But get the whole entire ‘Unsung’ scoop on the soul clapping we should be doing for pioneer R&B act The O’Jays.
(And hurry up… before haters on the Tube can get it pulled down.)
Yes, Her Name Is ABCDE… (Video)
Five-year-old Abcde Redford pronounces her name “ab-city.”
…and watch the above clip to the end, because she is not the only one. Wow.
Okay, sure, tsk-tsk to the employee who made the little girl feel bad. Would it have made a difference if it was made clear that the PARENT who named the child was the real target? Dunno. Ummm. No. Probably not.
But… well… Though parents can name their children whatever, should they???
(Gonna leave it there.)
