Unsung: DeBarge (Video)

Before Michael Jackson split from his band of brothers, and for a while after, the music world (and the world at large) was constantly asking ‘Who would be the next Jackson 5?’ The answer at one time would have definitely been DeBarge. But right when they were right there as a family, something… a lot of things, actually… went terribly wrong. The large family from Grand Rapids (Michigan, USA) had it all in the 1980s – the looks, the sound, the fans, growing fame worldwide. But then things took a sadly familiar downturn that comes with having it all (way past enough). Industry and social pressures, addictions and more… caused them to lose the most important thing – each other. After that – the split – came bigger and harder losses.

A powerful Unsung on DeBarge (full episode above).

Supergirl (Series Trailer)

Add another comic-brought-to-life to your channel-surfing agenda. CBS has green-lit the “Supergirl” television series for this Fall. DC Comics character Supergirl is Superman’s cousin, Kara Zor-El. On the show she’ll be challenged mastering her superhuman abilities and navigating the day-to-day world. Not too groundbreaking in that regard, but looking at the 6+ minute trailer above, CBS is sinking major chips into the hero party. So there better be a huge crowd (e.g. TV audience) tuning in to see the show. Heard good things about the other comic-based shows – The Flash and [Green] Arrow on The CW, even Daredevil on Netflix. However, Supergirl has to be much bigger; (at least) be on par with Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. – on rival major broadcast network ABC. We will see. But for now… see the trailer.

(And before someone brings up Gotham on Fox… Sure, it’s based on DC’s Batman; but that’s a pre-Batman story. Doesn’t count yet.)

Killer Mike On ‘Real Time With Bill Maher’ (Video)

Bill Maher and panelists John Waters, Heather McGhee, Charles Murray and Michael Render – aka Killer Mike – discuss the criticism of Michelle Obama’s Tuskegee (home to our own @ojones1) speech and the underlying causes of the Baltimore riots (above).

“…Why are you burning down your own community? [We] burned down a community that [we] don’t own!”
Killer Mike

Bam! Folks don’t destroy what they truly own. Makes sense, right? Mike always does. Continue after the jump with more Killer Mike telling it like it T-I-’tis (like the elders say) – especially about Bill O’Reilly – on HBO’s Real Time With Bill Maher. Also have the bonus show, Overtime, embedded after the jump.

Comedy: Mike Epps Stars In ABC’s “Uncle Buck” Series (Trailer)

Heard some folks are upset about this redo of “Uncle Buck.” C’mon… stop. John Candy (star of the movie version) was hilarious. Mike Epps IS hilarious. LAUGH at entertaining situation comedy. It is what both would want. That said, rest in peace, John… and Mike, you better bring it!

Based on the hit movie of the same name, Uncle Buck (Mike Epps) is a fun loving but irresponsible guy who needs a job and a place to stay. By happy coincidence, his nieces and nephew’s Nanny has just quit and his brother and sister-in-law need his help. His unconventional personality just may make him the right fit for the family and they may be the answer to his problems, too.

Coming to ABC this Fall.

Uganda’s Kung Fu Child TV Stars (Video)

It’s called “Ugawood” (composite word, combining Uganda and Hollywood); and Ugawood loves the kids. Or at least that is how filmmakers in the country and region are trying to make it. The news clip relates a story of kids who are learning Kung Fu; to play action stars in movies made there. A beneficial secondary outcome: the kids’ learning discipline (probably a good thing for kid stars in the West to pick up, huh?).

Comedy: Watch As Key And Peele Take Us To ‘Negrotown’ (Video)

“Negrotown? Like Atlanta??”

Another gut-busting [musical] comedy sketch – ‘Negrotown’ – by Key and Peele. Sure there is a message in this; but don’t let that keep you from enjoying the bold comedy! To be tongue-in-cheek in story-telling; silly with sense. That’s the essence of hilarious satire. Enjoy your guilty pleasure.

You’re welcome.

Dr. Boyce Watkins On Bill O’Reilly (Video)

Above: Dr. Boyce Watkins speaking his piece on America; in particular, Fox News’ Bill O’Reilly and the things he gets away with saying on his show “The O’Reilly Factor.” Channeling fight promoter Don King, Dr. Watkins declares that “only in America” could O’Reilly and his “O’Reilly Factor” show have the run they have had; catering to his ‘special’ fanbase (whose enjoyment comes often at the expense of others). Dr. Watkins even went so far to say that Bill O’Reilly is “destructive to the country.”

Dr. Watkins talks about O’Reilly and more in the clip.

Jon Stewart Calling Bullsh!t On Media’s Baltimore Protest Coverage: ‘Kids Blowing Off Steam’ Versus ‘Urban Kids Rioting’ (Video)

This episode of The Daily Show, hosted Jon Stewart, takes some funny-but-true shots at CNN and Wolf Blitzer’s coverage of ongoing protests and riots in Baltimore. Blitzer said the events there are “unbelievable” and never-before-seen…Really? What about the RECENT events in Ferguson? And unbelievable? C’mon… college kids do much damage after big games. Of course, the Baltimore situation is not a game; and indeed there is more to the outbursts in Baltimore (if only the news would cover it).

The heavier coverage of the annual White House Correspondents’ Dinner compared to the riots in Baltimore (sparked by the death of 25-year-old Freddie Gray, who died days after suffering a spinal cord injury while in police custody) was more than fair. The governor calling in the National Guard, properties and cars were set on fire citywide…all less than an hour’s drive away??? Yeah, CNN [and Today Show and other news media], you’re slipping. And blowing on the flames on the fires now, to keep your ratings stoked, instead of fanning out and covering the fullness of the story (including root causes like poverty, lack of economic opportunity in the community, issues related to youth disenfranchisement) is not helping.

Floyd “Money” Mayweather Talks About His Tough Youth, ‘Toys,’ Manny Pacquiao And More With Stephen A. Smith (More)

“I have to…because he’s not just any other fighter.” – Floyd Mayweather

Stephen A. Smith was able to pull some good insights from Floyd Mayweather in this ESPN ‘All Access’ episode. For one, Mayweather was NOT ducking the upcoming ‘fight of the century’ AND an important two, he is preparing for his bout with Manny Pacquiao harder than he has for anyone in quite some time. Chopping wood, going old school with training techniques and intensity like a ‘Rocky’ movie. Despite the expected bravado, Floyd is SERIOUS about this upcoming fight (this Saturday, May 2nd)!

Now, okay. Fair warning: Co-host Skip Bayless is going to throw shade at Floyd (ex: “Now I KNOW he’s going to lose”). Look past that though, he touches on concerns expressed by insiders and onlookers worldwide: Mayweather’s ‘bluster’ compensating for a real ‘fear’ of Pacquiao, being embarrassed into finally making the fight, otherwise risking a lackluster legacy (were he to retire never fighting an obvious contender for his titles), and advanced age (38 years old) as a boxer, among other things.

WATCH! Great episode. Good point brought up by guest Michael Rappaport later in this culled-together clip, too. Everyone should hope for a good fight with a clear winner; and that there will be no shenanigans (interruptions by parachuters, bad decisions by the judges, etc.).

Of course, we also get a look at the house, the million-dollar car collection… you know the ‘toys’ (fun, but SERIOUS blingage)!

The ‘F*@k It’ List: President Obama Roasts Himself, Hillary Clinton, and Vice President Joe Biden (Video)

The highlight of this news snip clip: President Obama’s new policy list (not a bucket list; but it rhymes with ‘bucket’). But there’s other good stuff in the brief video compilation, too. It was like the end of a ‘Barack Obama Roast’ at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner. He got shots in on e’erybody. Haaaaa!

Roy Jones Jr. Talks About Beef Outside The Ring: His Dad, Fat Joe, And Where Things Stand (Video)

Did you know that when Fat Joe rapped “Even Roy Jones was forced to lean back,” it would start a beef the boxer was ready cook?? Hmmm, wonder if even Joe knew. That happened, and Roy speaks on the confrontation. And what happened between him and the dude that pretty much started him ‘fighting’… his father.

Cam’ron “Keeps It 100” On The Topic Of Snitching On ‘The Nightly Show With Larry Wilmore’ (Video)

Larry Wilmore with a good point above: How can the cops expect us to ‘snitch’ on their neighbors; yet they won’t tell the truth on their peers doing dirt and hiding behind the badge. Wilmore has been doing a great job with topic AND guest selection. Interesting perspectives on snitching; and more interesting, the poster child for the ‘No Snitching’ movement – Killa Cam – is there to weigh in. Will there be weak tea passed across the table for this “Keep It 100” segment of The Nightly Show?

Coming To HBO: “The Brink” (Trailer)

“The Brink” looks like it could be hilarious. The trailer more than suggests comedy with a little bite most likely, as Middle East meets West. Jack Black, Tim Robbins… and some ‘you are such an American a$$hole’ quips from comic/actor Aasif Mandvi. Yeah, bet on it. “The Brink” premieres June 21, 2015, at 10:30PM EST on HBO.

Divorce Court: Man Accuses His Wife Of Sleeping With The Entire Wu-Tang Clan (Video)

“Let me put on the record that the Wu-Tang is nothing but gentlemen,” said the Defendant. “They treated me highly respectful and I would never cheat on him. Also…I don’t know if this is appropriate to say, but I would never be like a bust down or a groupie in that type of situation. I kept my lady points together…I met Wu-Tang. I went backstage and got on their tour bus. I went back to the hotel and hung out all night. It was amazing!”

Yeah, riiiiight. Apparently, Wu-Tang Clan is something to f#ck with. Wonder if Method Man called out the order like the intro: The Rza, The Gza… Hahaaa!

Umm… that is to say innocent until proven guilty in a [Divorce] Court of [TV] law.

Maaan. If your wife came back to the house from a Wu concert with this story after 7 AM the next morning and you DON’T leave her… HA! Just watch this episode of Divorce Court.

Comedy Central’s Larry Wilmore On The Shooting Of Walter Scott ‘For The Record’ (Video)

The Nightly Show With Larry Wilmore slid right into The Colbert Report’s 11:30 PM Comedy Central slot. And doing so like a boss! Great tongue-in-cheek political satire. Gotta say though, Larry is starting with a lot more bite. Watch his do-you-see-this-sh!t commentary on cellphone video showing a South Carolina police officer (Michael Slager) fatally shooting an unarmed black man (Walter Scott) in the back.

“I’ll stop talking about this sh!t when it stops happening.”
Larry Wilmore
