Technology: 3D Print Your Dinner With ‘Foodini’ (Video)

Hungry? Bet you are. Why not help yourself to chocolate treats. You can get them over there… off the printer!

Wait wha-?

Yep. Of course, this ‘printer’ is not a regular printer. This 3D printer is not too much unlike Cody Wilson’s 3D printer for guns (earlier post here). There is one glaring difference: what comes out of the Foodini is meant to go into your mouth. What comes out of the printed gun…nah.

Very interesting (and tasty) application of 3D printing tech.

TECHNOLOGY: “DJ” Dr. Kate Stone Gives A TED Talk On Her New Turntables & Fader Made Of Paper (Video)

The work of my team and myself is the realization of my childhood fascinations. We put electronics into paper, and paper is all around us.
Dr. Kate Stone

Physicist and former sheep herder (what?) Kate Stone has spent the past decade working to combine regular paper with conductive inks and tiny circuit boards to offer a unique, magical experience. To date, applications include a newspaper embedded with audio and video, posters that display energy usage in real time, and the extremely nifty paper drumkit and set of DJ decks she demonstrates onstage. See her TED talk video above demoing all that. Now, she is going to make you wait for it. But trust, once she starts playing the instruments she has made possible… you’ll realize the wait was worth it!

Paper Bass. Wow… and we thought ‘Paper Tablet Computers’ were something (well, they ARE)!

VICE: Kim Dotcom, Founder Of Megaupload, Speaks on Internet Freedom from His New Zealand Mansion While On House Arrest (Video)

On house arrest in the Dotcom Mansion, big-crazy-rich-guy-who-does-crazy-things Kim Dotcom (founder of Megaupload) is still, a year later, in the wake of the storm unleashed by enforcement agencies of the United States and Australia; waiting on possible extradition and trial. His case, from his point of view, is about Internet freedom (and fighting government infringement and takeover). Flash video, cell-phone video-conferencing… all to Kim’s credit. So, the pioneer/businessman is not lying down.

“I’m f*cking tired of this nonsense. Someone needs to stand up…”

Kim Dotcom

Not lying down; but in the meantime, laying down some music at the mansion (in Auckland, New Zealand). Nice. Tim Pool (interviewing Kim for VICE) got to lay down some backup vocals for Kim’s upcoming EDM album – and ride his Segway cycle – while talking about online surveillance, file-sharing, gaming, Kim’s controversial case, and more.

Science: Japanese Scientists Levitate Objects With Sound Waves (Video)

Using a refinement of the existing technology of sound wave management, bubbles, a screw and a tiny piece of wood were airlifted and moved around in all direction within the experiment’s confines.

We considered extended acoustic manipulation whereby millimeter-sized particles were levitated and moved three-dimensionally by localized ultrasonic standing waves, which were generated by ultrasonic phased arrays…

Stop stop STOP! Hold up with all the scientific talk for a minute! People, they are moving sh!t without touching sh!t! Acoustic manipulation… On some X-MEN sh!t! Excuse my ‘French’ (or don’t hahaa) but this is really dope science fiction fact!

Technology: Gene-Radar Diagnoses Diseases Faster (Video)

Nanobiosym (Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA) physicist, physician, founder, chairman, and chief executive officer Dr. Anita Goel talking about her iPad-sized device (dubbed Gene-Radar) that diagnoses HIV, malaria, tuberculosis, and some types of cancer …in less than an hour …for way less than costly lab diagnoses that take weeks or months to complete. Real-life Star-Trek tech.

We are getting that much closer to getting affordable healthcare (e.g. preventative medicine) driven by extraordinary technical advances. A quarter-million dollar grant and Nanobiosym is field testing in Rwanda – where low-cost, fast effective medical approaches are really needed. Bravo, Dr. Goel! And just wait ’til Nanobiosym gets Gene-Radar down to smartphone size. Doc-in-a-box equipment ready to deploy overnight ship anywhere anytime!

Technology: Technical Illusions’ castAR Augmented Reality Glasses (Video)

Not just Virtual Reality (VR) but Augmented Reality (AR) Glasses. See, with VR, everything is virtual – part of the interface, not real (e.g. the ‘reality’ is created). However, AR can include physical objects as part of its interface and wearers’ interactions (e.g. the interface includes real things you can touch). I can see gaming applications for this. Sure. Imagine your friends traveling out to your house, excited about the ‘boom boom room’ you’re adding to your home…next year! Yeah, I can see AR glasses “completing” the construction virtually. And, of course, there will be military applications (but I’m not ranting on that over the holidays… nope… keeping it ‘holiday cheery’ man).

So, check this out. The folks at the Tested channel put on Technical Illusions’ castAR glasses at Maker Faire 2013. Watch the clips and chats above, with founders Jeri Ellsworth and Rick Johnson.

Technology: NASA’s New Superhero Robot (Video)

Of the teams participating in the DARPA Robotics Challenge (DRC) last year, NASA’s Johnson Space Center (JSC) developed the clear winner – a humanoid robonaut, Valkyrie.

Valkyrie (designated R5 by NASA) is a 1.9 meter tall, 125 kilogram, battery-powered human-like robot. A JSC team in Houston partnered with The University of Texas and Texas A&M (with funding from the state of Texas) to build the R5 for the DRC.

The DRC challenge was to create tech that could walk over uneven terrain, climb a ladder, use tools, and drive; pretty much be capable of operating in the same spaces that a person would operate in, under the control of humans who have only minimal training with robots. Nice. Take a look.

Technology: Robot Dragonfly Drones (Video)

“Most people [speaking of the DelFly Explorer] talk about the three D’s – dull, dangerous, and dirty. We talk about the three F’s – fun, functional, and friendly.”

Dutch engineers at the Delft University of Technology have created a Micro Air Vehicle (referring to an aerial drone nearer in size to an insect than an airplane) called the DelFly Explorer. Weighing only 20 grams, or as much as four sheets of A4 paper, the Explorer’s sensor system is entirely self-contained. A tiny system of two cameras and a navigation computer to control itself (e.g. to take off by itself, maintain height and avoid obstacles for the nine minutes of its battery life).

DelFly’s engineers imagine a range of uses for their new MAV – stuff like detecting ripe fruit in greenhouses to streaming live event or theme park video. Cool. Wonder what a military or government entity might use this for? Hmmm…

Actually, think ‘smaller’ (so to speak)… Can you imagine what a jealous mate, or a nosy neighbor, might do with this fly-in-the-room tech? Hmmmmmm…

Might be a toy you’d wanna keep from under the tree for now. Hahaaa.

Jay Leno’s Gran Turismo 6 Driving Experience (Video)

Straight out of Jay Leno’s garage… The Gran Turismo driving experience. Chances are, most of us have not had the opportunity to get behind the wheel of the souped up classic whip’s that Leno pushes. So, GT 6 could model any car driving experience and tell us how “real” the game feels. But convincing Jay of how real a virtual rendition of his car’s control feels… Now, that’s something. Watch.

Witness The Birth Of Nissan 3E At The Tokyo Car Show (Video)

Online. Linked in. Nah, not like you’re thinking. This is waaaay hotter tech than a ‘job networking’ site. Nissan 3E glasses, when development has been completed, will be jacked into the ‘Net AND linked into fellow 3E wearers… transmitting cam footage, sights and sounds in real-time. Person-to-person experiential communication like this will allow you to see (and hear) what I’m saying (and viewing) at the same damn time!

Check out the cool way the prototype will be used at the 43rd Tokyo Car Show. The glasses will take you there, whether you’re there or not.

Technology: DJI Innovations’ Phantom 2 Vision Quadcopter (Video)

‘What makes our Phantom 2 Vision unique is its ability to stream live video down to your smartphone.’

Paul Pan, DJI Representative

And we could stop right there! Some of the coolest tech coming out. DJI Innovations put out a GPS-enabled Phantom quadcopter – the go-to aerial platform for the GoPro HERO actioncam – last year. Now, they got that Phantom 2 Vision coming… with improved battery life, a video-stabilizing platform and an included HD video camera that allows for first-person-view via a mobile device.

Eye-in-the-sky fun for anyone who gets one. Backyard sunbathers beware… hahaaa.

Politics: Former VP Al Gore Is Worried. The Survival Of Civilization Is At Risk (Video)

When asked, “What does the world look like in 100 years?” Former U.S. Vice President Al Gore declares:

The answer is in our hands….Our democracy has been hacked…Big Money has now perverted our democracy… to serve the purposes of special interests… Internet-based, democratic forms of communication can re-empower individuals to make their voices heard in numbers that can outweigh the special interests and lobbyists…It’s important to change light bulbs, but it’s way more important to change laws…What’s at risk is truly the survival of civilization…literally, that is the case.

Watch this conversation Motherboard’s Brian Merchant and Al Gore on VICE: Warnings of humanity on the brink, tempered with optimism that we can turn things around. Great clip. Watch!

The Electric Superbike Of The Future (Video)

Conventional combustion engine motorcycles vs. Mission Motorcycle’s electric superbike. Way less mechanical noise with much the same speed, Mission’s RS model (above) is a limited-edition, top-end bike.

The RS’s electric motor produces a huge-but-not-unheard-of 160 horsepower; the 130 foot-pounds of torque puts it at least in the superbike world. Even then, the bike’s lack of a transmission means going from zero to 60, which takes less than three seconds, requires nary a shift. Hitting its limited top speed of 150 miles an hour requires little more than twisting the throttle and holding on.

– Vice Motherboard

For $58,999, you get the best suspension, carbon wheels, and perhaps the most advanced gauge, navigation, and telemetry system available on a bike. It’s worth the money, if you have it. Today’s concept is almost as good as current gas-powered peers… almost

Another big “eff you” from the Military Industrial Complex to peace pushing organizations like the United Nations, Human Rights Watch and the International Committee for Robot Arms Control who want the world to cool it with the weapons tech advancements for just a minute… Big Tony Starks-style weapons system manufacturers like Northrop Gruman ‘modeled their products for the military last week at Fort Benning in Georgia, to judge how they could be used in combat. Lieutenant Col. Willie Smith said at the event that he hopes to unleash the killing machines onto the battlefield within five years—not as weapons their own right, but as trusted members of the squad.’

Technology: You Can Have A Flying Car In Your Garage In 2015 (Video)

Might as well face it… the future of private transportation WILL include aircraft! We already posted on the James Bond-esque seaplane coming out. Cool, but you need 750 feet of clear water or land strip to take off or land. Enter Terrafugia’s flying concept TF-X car, slated to go to market in 2015… no pilot’s license required, can fit in a standard garage, and will VERTICALLY TAKE OFF AND LAND! Yeah. You could fly out of traffic jams. Terrafugia is already testing a flying car for pilots. This is happening people.

Technology: Do You Want To Know When You’re Going To Die? Check Your Tikker (Video)

“Dubbed the ‘death watch,’ Tikker has been created by Swedish inventor Fredrik Colting but far from being morbid, Colting calls it ‘The Happiness Watch’ and claims it has been designed to help people make the most of their life and cherish the time they have left.”

– DailyMail UK

The way it works: Users fill out a questionnaire about their medical history before subtracting their age from the results to get their death score. This score is entered into the watch and the countdown begins.
