Man Builds A Homemade 40 Watt ‘Laser Shotgun’ (Video)

Science fiction no more! You’ve seen them used on Star Wars, Star Trek, countless action cartoons… and you wanted one so damned bad (at least at some point in your life). Well, lookit… a mother-father LASER RIFLE! This guy styropyro invented one, because he wanted one (and because it was not illegal to build it). How real is it? Watch the clip above.

Dangerous is an understatement for this thing. There’s no no good reason for anyone to own anything this powerful. But because it wasn’t illegal for me to build…

Catalin Alexandru Duru Sets New Guinness Record For Hoverboard Flight (Video)

The hoverboard is real. You know that from our posts here. We just don’t have a commercially viable product to buy and use…yet. But that doesn’t mean we cannot set and break a few records in the meantime, right?

Enter Catalin Alexandru Duru. The Canadian inventor designed and built his own hoverboard. Then he broke the distance record for hoverboard flight. Yeah, Guinness Book has a record for that. Duru traveled a distance of 275.9 m (905.2 ft). He only had to travel a distance of over 50 m (164 ft) to break the record.

Showoff.

Technology: Surgical Robot With A Super-Delicate Touch (Video)

Precision and reduction of risk in hazardous situations have been two things robo-technology has been known for for the longest. Delicacy though, not so much. But check this out: There’s now a robot that could suture a wound, slowly and deliberately moving a piece of skin back over the exposed flesh and stitching it in place with its tiny metal clamps; and with snip of its scissor (on the arm) the job is immaculately done. So immaculate, why not name it after an artist; like the artist who influenced the design of the earliest robots - Leonardo da Vinci.

[T]he da Vinci Si Surgical System, the most advanced robotic technology available which can be used for a range of minimally invasive procedures in gynecology, urology, thoracic and general surgery. For surgeons, da Vinci’s benefits include better vision, more precision and more control due to the system’s magnification and 3D capabilities, elimination of tremors and multiple degrees and directions of movement. Through da Vinci’s robotic wrists which are capable of rotating 540 degrees, surgeons are able to perform movements that aren’t possible with human hands.

See the Da Vinci Surgical System delicately peel a grape (above)… and surgically repair one (after the jump)! The System still requires a human surgeon, but this device is a huge leap in medical technology and science.

Stronger, Faster, Cheaper: Robots Are Replacing China’s Work Force (Video)

Very interesting. Over here in The States, folks dread the coming of robotic innovations that could cost them their jobs for the sake of manufacturing efficiency and cost effectiveness. But in China, where they have a lot of people, there is a shortage of “blue collar” workers. In other words, Chinese manufacturers claim that they don’t have enough workers around to complain. Their money-saving initiative involving robots would not be to replace workers; rather to avoid having to pay high wages to woo laborers or move to where the workers live. I wonder how this plays out for the average Chinese worker in a communist society as compared to here in a capitalist society like here the U.S. It seems like the companies in China could be fazing out the average worker, but are these corporations sharing in the workers’ ability to find work, sharing in the profits, or assisting them in pursuing their dreams elsewhere.

Check it.

Easton LaChappelle’s Brain-Powered Prosthetics Could Change The World (Video)

It’s cutting edge robotics meets 3D printing meets whatever cool sci-fi they’ll work in. Definitely incredible. And young inventor Easton LaChappelle, definitely a kid genius! What were you doing at 19? Designing and developing miraculous brain-powered prosthetics? Probably not. But watch Easton in the clip above and be amazed. But note what is most amazing: not just prosthetics for, say, soldiers rendered limbless in service to their country; but that dude can produce them for around $500 each (e.g. for the cheap)!

Technology: Printed Midi DJ Decks for DJ QBert’s Album (Video)

Technology? Nah, this is too crazy for that. How about incredi-tech? Amaza-tronics? Hell, something! This is Novalia’s and DJ Qbert’s interactive DJ Decks… in an album cover… the first in the world. Why are you still sitting???

QBert’s Kickstarter-funded “Extraterrestria” album features a set of working Bluetooth MIDI decks and controls that connect to iOs and OSx. Touching the paper connects to the Algoriddim DJAY app, allowing the user to scratch, mix and fade any songs they load into the software.

Complete with two decks, a cross fader and an array of SFX buttons beautifully printed onto paper using printed electronics and artwork designed by Morning Breath for QBert, the decks demonstrate the possibilities for interconnectivity between the physical and digital in a way that can enhance user experience.

Don’t believe us just watch. Yeah, mind blown so bad… paraphrasing Trinidad James over here. SICK tech!!

Want one? Tell them Novalia here.

Park And Fly: AeroMobil 3.0 Is A Real Flying Car For Real People (Video)

Keep on thinking they only have flying cars in cartoons and movies… until one flies overhead. Probably inspired by sci-fi, the AeroMobil 3.0 (made in Slovakia) is an idea that has been in development since 1989. With a max airspeed of 124 mph and max range of 430 miles (on a full tank), this flying car could make short work of daily commutes or make short vacation getaways very workable. AeroMobil’s ultimate flying machine is most ‘unreal’ in the way it is made for real people; uses regular fuel from gas stations and can be parked in regular spaces.

For real. Take a look.

The Digital Sex Industry (Documentary)

What is sex? What is sex online? What can tech do for (or to) your love life? Though we have continually wrestled with these questions… perhaps it’s time we REALLY talk nuts and bolts (yeah, let your mind wander) about it.

In “Digital Love,” VICE investigates how love and sex is faring in the digital age, starting with technology’s notorious bedmate, the adult entertainment industry. We make a pilgrimage to LA’s “Porn Valley” to witness firsthand how virtual reality is scarily close to creating fully interactive porn before heading to Europe’s sex capital, Amsterdam, where the Dutch enthusiastically enlist the use of “teledildonics” to enhance their long-distance relationships.

Porn leads the way in media and tech. This could very well be the very near future. And Facebook is in on this now? Once again, VICE is taking us there. Watch.

How To Remotely Unlock Your Car Using Your Brain (Video)

Might be the coolest vid you watch today. Like a ‘Mr. Wizard’ (or ‘MythBusters’ for you young’ns) clip… on steroids! Sooo… Dr. Jean Grey (of the X-Men) has a head full of water. Well, so do you (sorta). And while starting a stalled stealth jet might be easy for the ‘mutant’ powers in her head, physicist Roger Bowley shows you how you can unlock a key using that powerful thing inside yours. He heard mention of this on BBC Television’s show Top Gear, but couldn’t believe it. Only one thing he could do.

The only way to find out if something is true is to do the damned experiment… disprove your prejudices.
Roger Bowley

Ain’t that something. Science meets social commentary. One clip; boiled down to one poignant statement. Told you it’d be cool. Watch, learn, and enjoy doing so.

Tony Hawk Hoverboard (Video)

Alright, the last viral hoverboard video was a hoax, and Tony Hawk was in on it. But this ish right here… apparently the real deal. Arx Pax has invented the world’s first hoverboard (called the “Hendo”). Four hover engines on the bottom of the Hendo Hoverboard help produce a magnetic field over a conductive surface like aluminum or copper, causing the futuristic machine to hover an inch above ground. Top speed: 15 mph (according to TMZ).

Technology: South Korea Is Almost Ready For Autonomous Robots Called ‘Pibots’ To Fly Their Planes (Video)

“Pibots” have been designed to fly every kind of plane that a human was meant to fly, and they have been tested for most every simulation and situation… except actual cockpit flight in a full-sized aircraft. But South Korean researchers say that is coming soon (in the video report above).

Researchers in South Korea are developing a robotic pilot that could potentially replace humans in the cockpit. Unlike drones and autopilot programs which are configured for specific aircraft, the robots’ humanoid design will allow it to fly any type of plane with no additional sensors.

Just saying. Why does that first Pibot look like a skeleton after the crash? And “because it’s Halloween” is NOT an acceptable answer!

Technology: The World’s First Hoverboard (Video)

Okay, you’ve seen some really cool hoverboard demos that were actually cool feats at film technology (e.g. camera tricks, with famous actors ‘witnessing’ the hovering). This ain’t that. This is Hendo Hover’s genuine Kickstarter video. The future is now.

Coolest line: “The wheel may finally have some competition.”

…And the founders promise those who ‘kick in’ will get a ‘starter’ kit; allowing them to demo the technology themselves (not the board, but a ‘white box’ hoverer that shows what the board will accomplish). Watch above. Follow the link to help fund the campaign (below).

Audi Unveils the World’s Fastest Driverless Car with New ‘Audi RS 7’ (Video)

Hmmm. It’s okay to admit. When you think driverless car, you think top speed… about as fast as say… a golf cart. Tell you what. How about a German-engineered driving machine, with no driver, moving at full speed? How about at RACING speed; like on a racetrack? Yeah, that happened; the Audi RS 7 did a driverless lap at Hockenheim raceway! Watch.

Tesla Unveils ‘Autopilot’ Function To Make Its Cars Driverless (Video)

Elon Musk (you know, the dude after whom the makers of the ‘Iron Man’ movies modeled Tony Stark) says the D series of Tesla’s Model S sedan will be out soon; and he is gunning to put autonomous cars on the road by 2023.

I think we’ll be able to achieve true autonomous driving, where you could literally get in the car, go to sleep and wake up at your destination.
Elon Musk

Now, take it easy, it is expected to take two to three years after release for regulators to approve the autonomous cars for use in public. Still, the company demo’d its autopilot feature at a media event outside Los Angeles a little over a week ago.

(More video after the jump.)
