Two Wrestlers Speak On ‘Life After Sumo’ (Documentary)
The glamor and prestige of being on top of the sumo game in the Land Of The Rising Sun… if you can get to the top. And even if you do, being ‘about that life’ comes at a price. Watch VICE SPORTS tally up the bill in this documentary episode.
Sumo wrestlers enter training stables, or beyas, as young teens and dedicate their lives to the sport until they retire. Training involves incredible food intake, heavy beer consumption as a means of weight gain and daily full-contact sparring. Along with the health impacts, most wrestlers leave the sport with little education and less money. In this VICE Sports exclusive, we visit with two retired rikishis to get their take on life after sumo.

For The NYC Title, Brooklyn Tech’s Team Will Step In The Arena (Documentary)
If you cannot wrap your head around ‘step team’ as a sports/athletic activity, look at this and reconsider. Just saying. They go in as hard as any team on the court (or anywhere else).
You won’t find the most successful team at Brooklyn Technical High School on the basketball court or on the football field. You’ll find them stepping in the cafeteria – sweating, laughing and striving to keep their crown as NYC’s regional champions. In this VICE Sports exclusive, we met up with the all-female Lady Dragons step team to see their pressure-packed final days of preparation for NYC regionals.

Great story, regardless of what you ‘decide’ about the nature of the competition.
Changing The Game: Lacrosse Comes To Harlem (Video)
Up top, it’s all about the blacktop. The lyric, “Basketball is my favorite sport,” not lacrosse… right? Well, these kids are into it AND it’s helping them level up to a better shot in life.
Basketball courts may still dominate north of 125th Street in New York City, but more kids than ever are taking up lacrosse as their sport of choice. We followed Javon to hear what his friends think about lacrosse and how he plans to make his mark on the game.
– VICE SPORTS
Watch. Might have to change that lyric.
SlamBall, Born In The USA, Has Been Reborn In China (Documentary)
Just to review, or introduce… SlamBall is a bouncy-bouncy version of basketball played on floors with embedded trampolines to facilitate super-high leaps and bounds. As described in the above doc vid, the game is pretty ‘video gamish’ and due to business and sports culture trending downfalls, SlamBall got ‘slammed’ in the U.S. However, it has found life in China.
“We never left, we just needed to take the best path for us,†says SlamBall’s creator Mason Gordon. After years with little exposure other than showcases and bar conversations between nostalgic fans, Slamball is now experiencing a resurgence in China. With a focus on bringing programs to universities before securing any TV rights, the sport is finding a foothold in a basketball-obsessed nation. VICE Sports traveled to China to check out the nation’s first facility and take in the scene.

Discovery Channel’s Cage Match: Shaq Vs. Sharks (Video)
He thought it was ‘Shaq Week’ but nah, son, it is “SHARK Week” on Discovery Channel… every year. But props to the Big Shaqtus for leaving the land and braving the depth to do a face-to-face the potentially vicious fishes, mano y (um) shark-o.

Yeah. That happened. Hit the jump and see.
African-American Cowgirls Are Breaking Stereotypes (Video)

Neil Holmes Might Be The Last Black Bull Rider In The South (Documentary)
In case you didn’t know, roughly a fourth of the cowboys of old were Black. Today though, the world of professional bull riding, a sport rooted in ranching culture, is predominantly White. And when Neil Holmes leaves… even more so.
On this episode of ‘MINORITY REPORTS,’ VICE sent Lee Adams to Texas to meet Neil Holmes and Ezekiel Mitchell—two Black bull riders at different points in their careers—to find out what it’s like as a person of color trying to make it in the predominantly White world of professional bull riding. Holmes—an accomplished pro on the eve of his retirement—explains how he got into bull riding and talks about leaving the sport as the only Black pro ranked in the top 100 bull riders. Desperately trying to fill Holmes’s shoes is Mitchell, who’s struggled with the funds to travel, and has experienced racism in the sport first-hand.

10 Essentials Kyrie Irving Can’t Live Without (Video)
Kyrie listed his notebook as his first essential, right off the top. When we posted Pusha T’s list on here, did anybody hear him say ‘notebook’ as part of his Essentials list (asking… would be interesting if the basketballer said ‘notebook’ but the emcee did not… just saying)?
From his notebook full of ideas to a Rolex Sky-Dweller, here are 10 items Kyrie Irving can’t live without. Kyrie stars in “Uncle Drew,” out in theaters June 29th.

Stephen A. Smith Speaks On How He Made His Way Into Sports Journalism And On Marijuana Use (Video)
Stephen A. gets a ‘loose’ as his situation will allow. You know, can’t really get smoked out on camera even when he is off work. Must maintain the rep. But he does tell The DoggFather about his body part preference on a woman (i.e. that he is a ‘bottom feeder’).
On the latest episode of GGN, Smith chopped it up with Uncle Snoop in the studio and told stories about climbing from New York City to the top of the sports media food chain, bringing Snoop on his early shows and, of course, the reasoning behind his famously anti-cannabis tagline, “stay off the weeeed†(“I got family members that do it, I got friends that do it, but it’s not about the weed, it’s about the fact that it’s costing you money!â€)

Jalen Rose Vs. Jay Williams Debating Michael Jordan vs. LeBron James (Video)
C’mon! Are you kidding me?? It’s not even close! We know who’d win, head-up, one-on-one, right? Yeah, you already know… Alright then. That’s all I gotta say.
You cannot tell me in a one-on-one game though that LeBron James wouldn’t dominate Mike.
– Jay Williams
Okay. And that’s all that Jay is gonna say. Hahaaa!
