Julius Erving aka ‘DR. J’ Says He Would Not Build An NBA Team Around Carmelo Anthony (Video)

NBA Hall Of Famer & former Philadelphia 76er Julius Erving stopped by ESPN2’s program ‘SPORTSNATION’ to talk basketball. When the topic of Carmelo Anthony & the NY Knicks came up, Dr. J didn’t pull any punches as to what’s wrong with the franchise.  I’ve said it many times before that “Dr. J” was Michael Jordan BEFORE ‘Air Jordan’ but ‘Dr. J’ didn’t always have the help he needed to win multiple championships. Michael Jordan is viewed by many people as the greatest to ever play the game, but it took Phil Jackson to convince him to slow down from being an aggressive scorer early in MJ’s career so that the Bulls could properly build around him. When asked if Carmelo Anthony is the right guy to build around in order for the Knicks to win one or more championships, Dr. J kept it honest that he didn’t have faith in Melo being the right guy.  I believe Lebron James is the greatest to ever play the game & he’s not even done yet, but the kid from Akron recognized early that he needed the proper pieces around him to solidify multiple championships in efforts to silence the critics & cement himself in the G.O.A.T. argument.

Muhammad Ali Goes To Mars (Video)

Nobody does it like ‘The Greatest of All Time’ … then, now, in the ring, on the radio, on Earth, on Mars… Great PBS ‘Blank on Blank’ episode, with less animation but still an animated ‘guest’ in Muhammad Ali. And that whole ‘Mars match’ in this lost interview… was off the top of his head, with a girl in his lap! Talk about freestyling!

The Army & Navy Used Kanye West & Justin Timberlake As Inspiration For Their Annual Football Rivalry (Video)

Artist Tosa Brooks snapping over an instrumental reproduction (by Crsxh) of Kanye West’s “Blood on the Leaves” to amp the West Point footballers (aka Army) for one game and one goal…

“Beat Navy!”

Too bad hype videos don’t win games, as the Navy Midshipmen (of the United States Naval Academy) rolled 34-7 over the Army Black Knights for the 12th year in the row. Nice job though, Tosa. Maybe next year, Army.

So, how many of y’all wonder if Navy did a video. Heh heh, check after the jump. It’s al-riiighht. Hahahaaa!

CNN Talks To Heisman Trophy Runner-Up ‘AJ McCarron’ And His Friend ‘AJ Starr’ (Video)

2nd place for the Heisman Trophy; 1st place in our hearts. Thank you, AJ McCarron, for showing us how a star shines. The University of Alabama quarterback became fast friends with a fellow student, AJ Starr, who he first noticed hanging around the practice field – rain or shine.

Great story. Makes me proud to be an Alabama alum. Roll Tide, AJ. Both of y’all!

Thai Prison Fights (Documentary)

If you want to claim ‘baddest man on the planet’ (e.g. what they called Iron Mike Tyson in his prime)… and you are in the knuckle-up game in Bangkok, Thailand… then Klong Prem high-security prison is as good as Madison Square Garden. Sorta. Well, the inmates there box outsiders; and they fight hard for what’s really on the line – money, shorter sentences, glory, to settle arguments. Watch the VICE mini-documentary on it above. Let’s get it on!

PBS: ‘Blank on Blank’ Presents Wilt Chamberlain Sharing Some Tall Tales And Little Known Truths (Video)

“Today when you see someone close to my size… you think ‘dollar signs’…And they don’t think ‘circus freak’…”

Wilt Chamberlain

Y’all know the stories about basketball legend and ladies’ man Wilt Chamberlain (yup, ladies love Wilt’s “stilt”)… obviously that ‘freak’ thing worked for him off-court, too (nah… it’s his sensitivity). Another great episode ‘Blank on Blank’ by PBS Digital Studios. Insightful while staying light and entertaining.

Jim Brown Calls Out Kobe Bryant On ‘The Arsenio Hall Show’ (Video)

I’ve often said I respect Kobe Bryant as a great athlete, but I’m not a “fan” of Kobe Bryant. One of my lifelong heroes in life, Jim Brown appeared on the Arsenio Hall show & when asked about his opinions on Kobe Bryant he pulled no punches. What Jim Brown says are a few of the reasons I’m not much of a Kobe Bryant fan. I’ve said the same things to friends of mine & via my own twitter page. Jim is not tearing down Kobe Bryant, but it is what it is.

Sports/Opinion: Charles Barkley Speaks On The Use Of The N-Word (Video)

Interesting. I agree with Charles Barkley (above) & I agree with Michael Wilbon (after the jump). What came up around recent discussion/debate regarding the NFL’s Richie Incognito’s alleged bullying of Miami Dolphin Jonathan Martin has jumped the fence… from the National Football League to commentary from one of the greats of the National Basketball Association… to [once again] a national conversation. Ernie had Shaq chiming in near the end of the clip, too. Watch.

10,000 rushing yards by age 30, Steven Jackson is among the NFL’s (and history’s) elite running backs. However, now Jackson finds himself at a crossroads: joining the Atlanta Falcons after nine years with the St. Louis Rams… hopefully bringing enough steam with him to push the train down the tracks (e.g. deep into the playoffs some day soon). Jay Z’s Life + Times gives the mic and face time to Jackson this episode; so he can tell us where his mind, body, and soul are at this point in the game.

Dwyane Wade – Journey To 3 (Documentary)

“The journey is to 3… Three symbolizes to me a lot of what I believe in – The Father, The Son, The Holy Ghost… I needed to lean on my faith…”

Dwayne Wade

Suffice it to say the game is more than basketball to champions. It’s life – mind, body & soul. But to watch this D. Wade documentary – Journey To 3 – you get a real chance to see the man being real. Miami Heat basketball is definitely the context, but watch for what you learn about the athlete taking care of himself, the man persevering through adversity, and the father being with and for his family. A lot expertly squeezed into half a half-hour.
