Dominican Baseball Players (Video)

Interesting. Major League Baseball-affiliated programming that emphasizes literacy and a high school education for players; whether they get to play at a high level or not.

Over the last few decades, the Dominican Republic has changed the face of American baseball by churning out talented players whose humble beginnings have helped cultivate a unique passion for the game. That passion is often due to dire circumstances that drive all focus to the diamond instead of the classroom. The result is thousands of young Dominican men sacrificing their education and formative years for a 2% chance of making it to the big leagues.

We sent Jaimie Sanchez to Boca Chica, a small, rural town that is home to the MLB’s training camps to visit Junior Noboa. Junior is the head of Latin American Affairs for the Arizona Diamondbacks and has helped develop a digital education program for their young players. We also see Boca Chica through the eyes of two players who were forced to adjust to life back home after their dreams of major league glory never became a reality.

– VICE SPORTS

So, with a program that insists on some level of education, the theory is that would be players would have something to fall back on; even if the fall from potential glory is a hard one. VICE SPORTS with yet another compelling story-behind-the-story.

Never Walk Alone (Documentary)

You may need to watch this twice. Tears will get in the way the first time. Prediction.

Young teen Jack Gallagher has had a hard life. No doubt. But somehow, it has not hardened his spirit. Finding sanctuary on the hardtop, Jack played every game for his mom, in the last pair of shoes she bought him, the CP3s…until they no longer fit. Well, Chris Paul III got wind of that story and… just watch. Oh, man. THIS story.

The deeper that sorrow carves into your being, the more joy you can contain.
Is not the cup that holds your wine the very cup that was burned in the potter’s oven?
And is not the lute that soothes your spirit, the very wood that was hollowed with knives?
When you are joyous, look deep into your heart and you shall find it is only that which has given you sorrow that is giving you joy.
When you are sorrowful look again in your heart, and you shall see that in truth you are weeping for that which has been your delight.
– On Joy and Sorrow, From The Prophet by Kahlil Gibran

Very appropriate literary piece for this E:60 piece. It’ll make even more sense after you watch.

And It Don’t Stop: Allen Iverson On His Injecting Hip-Hop Into The NBA, His New Documentary And More (Video)

Allen Iverson was into way more than basketball as a young’un. And we know he brought more than phenomenal skills to pro basketball. If there was a name with which history could associate the NBA’s Hip-Hop swag, it’d be Iverson’s. Here in his sit down with Complex, he talks about that, other sports passions early in life, being controversial, a new documentary (to ‘splain it all) and more.

(Yuuup… he touches on that rap album he had, too.)

World Soccer Pioneer ‘Paul Canoville’ Speaks On Being 1st Black Player Signed to ‘Chelsea FC’ (Video)

When it comes to Sports being the first or a trailblazer can be good and bad at times.  It’s great if you are the first to set a world record or obtain hall of fame for having the most championship rings.  Well when you are the first to break the color line it can be a difficult process and Paul Canoville knows exactly how that feels.  The first black player ever signed to Chelsea FC (Soccer Team based in London, England) Paul experienced harsh treatment from his own fans and people associated with the team.  His love of the sport helped him push through and he helped the team secure championship silverware and now he is an advocate for the club speaking to kids  about pursuing their dreams and dealing with racism.  On his first trip to Atlanta I got a chance to speak with him for a few minutes about his experience at Chelsea and his foundation.  With Atlanta getting a MLS Soccer team in 2017,  we can expect more visits from Soccer legends across the pond!

Floyd “Money” Mayweather Talks About His Tough Youth, ‘Toys,’ Manny Pacquiao And More With Stephen A. Smith (More)

“I have to…because he’s not just any other fighter.” – Floyd Mayweather

Stephen A. Smith was able to pull some good insights from Floyd Mayweather in this ESPN ‘All Access’ episode. For one, Mayweather was NOT ducking the upcoming ‘fight of the century’ AND an important two, he is preparing for his bout with Manny Pacquiao harder than he has for anyone in quite some time. Chopping wood, going old school with training techniques and intensity like a ‘Rocky’ movie. Despite the expected bravado, Floyd is SERIOUS about this upcoming fight (this Saturday, May 2nd)!

Now, okay. Fair warning: Co-host Skip Bayless is going to throw shade at Floyd (ex: “Now I KNOW he’s going to lose”). Look past that though, he touches on concerns expressed by insiders and onlookers worldwide: Mayweather’s ‘bluster’ compensating for a real ‘fear’ of Pacquiao, being embarrassed into finally making the fight, otherwise risking a lackluster legacy (were he to retire never fighting an obvious contender for his titles), and advanced age (38 years old) as a boxer, among other things.

WATCH! Great episode. Good point brought up by guest Michael Rappaport later in this culled-together clip, too. Everyone should hope for a good fight with a clear winner; and that there will be no shenanigans (interruptions by parachuters, bad decisions by the judges, etc.).

Of course, we also get a look at the house, the million-dollar car collection… you know the ‘toys’ (fun, but SERIOUS blingage)!

MMA: The Underground Fighters Of Cuba (Video)

Fighting mixed martial arts in Cuba is not easy. Not just because MMA is demanding, or that life in Cuba is hard in many ways in general. It’s also hard because the fight is not just with the in-ring opponent; it’s with the government.

The Cuban government hasn’t legalized MMA for fear of losing its best boxers, so the fighters on coach Evelio Padron Ferrier’s team wrestle on concrete floors, use the ocean for endurance training, and practice techniques pulled from memory and bootlegged DVDs.

Nothing goes in or out of Cuba without facing obstacles. Freestyle fighting is no exception. Want to know more though? Follow VICE Fightland in to the den then.

The Phife Sports Network (PSN): Phife Dawg Narrates & Provides Game Analysis of Toronto Raptors vs. Los Angeles Clippers in Mini-Documentary (Video)

In case some of you may not be aware, Phife Dawg of the legendary rap group A Tribe Called Quest has been very active & vocal in sports for quite a number of years. In recent years he has appeared on ESPN, ESPN2, & various sportstalk radio programs around the country giving his opinion on everything from the NBA, NFL, NCAA College Basketball & more. There were rumors that Phife had some bigger plans in the works to further expand his sportscaster resume, but nothing stopping him from at least making inroads independently online with his own “PSN” or ‘Phife Sports Network.’ Check out one of the first video clips of Phife Dawg providing pre-game NBA analysis in great game that took place between the Toronto Raptors & the Los Angeles Clippers about a month ago on February 6th of this year. Phife Dawg & his manager DJ Rasta Root also performed at halftime while they were in Toronto that evening as well. In case you missed the footage from that, we have it below….

Kevin Garnett Makes Heroic Return To The Minnesota Timberwolves (Video)

Kevin Garnett started his NBA career as 19-year-old kid with the Minnesota Timberwolves. Unfortunately after 12 years he left the Timberwolves, eventually winning a championship with the Boston Celtics, but that didn’t stop fans T-wolves fans from welcoming back KG to the team he spent the majority of his career with. The energy was so high that even a shirt-less KG fan with ‘KG’ written on his chest was in full show out mode. Over the years KG has been one of my favorite players in the NBA & it’s going to be sad to see him leave the game. KG maybe near the end of his NBA career, but his leadership with Andre Wiggins & that young Timberwolves squad could surely leave an impact.
