Kevin Durant: The Offseason (Documentary)

It is what it is, but it is more than what we see. True of many things, but with folks in the NBA especially. With none more so than Kevin Durant, who gets real personal, beyond the tunnel, behind the curtain with this documentary. This is drawn from 2014 in the offseason; hence the title.

Vick (Documentary Trailer)

The teaser is powerful. Those that followed Michael from college through the pros certainly know that there is a story to break down. And if what the trailer promises holds… well… in the voice/words of Robin Harris’ character in “Do The Right Thing”… LET IT BE BROKE!

Michael Vick has been through it all.

The dual-threat playmaker was the No. 1 overall pick in the 2001 NFL draft, set numerous quarterback rushing records, made four Pro Bowls and amassed a fortune playing football.

Then it all disappeared. A dog-fighting scandal sent him from the gridiron to prison.

– Bleacher Report

Hope the Bleacher Report documentary does the right thing. We’ll see in July.

Candid Camera Classic: Ali Meets the Kids (Video)

If it is possible to run across an ‘Ali hater’ in this time of remembrance of The Greatest, SHOW THIS VIDEO!

Muhammad Ali made several appearances on Candid Camera. In 1974 he visited a school and allowed kids to “discover” him. Allen Funt narrates.

The Louisville Lip had no chill…larger than life, but accessible and obviously not shy about cutting up for the kids. Incredible classic TV clip that you may have seen. Worth watching [again].

R.I.P. Muhammad Ali

13344632_10154167763277822_6446833236814751172_n

As much as we want it not to be true, reporting from CBS Sports, BBC and myriad news media confirms that the man known worldwide as The Greatest, Muhammad Ali, has passed. He was 74 years old.

Born Cassius Marcellus Clay, Ali stepped into the world’s spotlight by winning a gold medal as a light-heavyweight at the 1960 Rome Olympics. He would go on to defeat Sonny Liston in 1964 to claim his first world title and became the first boxer to capture a world heavyweight championship on three separate occasions. Retiring in 1981, Ali won 56 of his 61 fights as an active professional. However, his accolades do not stop there. Sports Illustrated recognized Ali as “Sportsman of the Century,” and the BBC named him “Sports Personality of the Century.”

Though later more understated as an elder statesman of sport, remembering Ali’s boldness and bigger-than-life presence over the years is what is likely driving the water from your tear ducts now. Even now you hear his braggadocio echo…

I float like a butterfly; sting like a bee.
I am The Greatest!
I shook up the WORLD!
I’m a bad man!

But he was also a champion for Civil Rights and Human Rights the world over. An outspoken member of the Nation Of Islam, a conscious objector to the war in Vietnam (convicted for his stance), a goodwill ambassador (notably meeting Fidel Castro when U.S. – Cuba relations were still very cold) and so much more. Too much more to do justice to his legacy in this Memoriam, but please, if you will, say one more time as he would, “The Champ is here!”

Then, in spirit, join with mourners around the world dealing with the reality that The Champ is with us no more. Hit the jump for some remembrances, quotes and video footage.

Rest Well, Champ.

Line To Gain: How That Yellow First Down Line Came To Be Part Of Every Football Game Shown On TV (Video)

Wow. This is pretty dope. Check out the history and engineering behind sports on TV’s adoption of that yellow first down line you see during all the football games.

Since the late 1990s, the virtual yellow line has been quietly enhancing football broadcasts by giving viewers a live, intuitive guide to the state of play. The graphic is engineered to appear painted on the field, rather than simply plopped on top of the players, so it doesn’t distract from the game at all.

The line debuted during a September 27, 1998, game between the Baltimore Ravens and the Cincinnati Bengals. It was developed by a company called Sportvision Inc. and operated by six people in a 48-foot semi-truck parked outside the stadium.

ESPN was the only network that immediately agreed to pay the steep price of $25,000 per game. Before long, other companies began offering the yellow line to the other networks, and now you won’t see a football game without it.

Hands Of Stone (Trailer)

Trailer looks good. Damn good! When Robert De Niro (as trainer Ray Arcel) says, “You’re Roberto Duran. Get in there and act like it…” Whew!!

“Hands Of Stone” follows the life of Roberto Duran (Edgar Ramirez), the Panamanian fighter who made his professional debut in 1968 as a 16 year‐old and retired in 2002 at the age of 50. In June 1980, he defeated Sugar Ray Leonard (Usher Raymond) to capture the WBC welterweight title, but shocked the boxing world by returning to his corner in their November rematch, famously saying the words “no mas” (no more.)
