Go In-Depth With ‘Common’ and ‘Serena Williams’ On ESPN’s “The Undefeated” (Video)
Quick! When you conjure up a visual of a dude sitting down to talk to his ex, what do you think? Cringeworthy viewing, right? Well, nah. Kind of a trick question if you aren’t told that it’s the renaissance revolutionary cool rapper Common. And his ex? Oh that’s super sexy tennis star Serena Williams. Much better imagery in your mind now, of course.
On this ESPN’s The Undefeated: In-Depth… Serena and Common… speaking on fame, sports, and race and gender issues. Start above and continue after the jump.
ESPN’s 30 For 30: This Was The XFL (Trailer)
This trailer is intriguing. Check it out.
ESPN, the world’s sports leader, is going to do a documentary on the XFL, the failed football league borne of and bearing more than a slight resemblance to Vince McMahon’s leading sports entertainment franchise, World Wrestling Entertainment. Any televised sport has to be entertaining enough to bring eyeballs and ad revenue, right? So maybe Vince thought he could put out an entertaining football program with no sweat. Whatever the motivations and machinations behind the result and resulting demise, we should learn something watching this 30 For 30.
(Speaking of learning something… Do you know what XFL stood for? Answer: It was NOT Xtreme Football League! It was not an acronym at all. Learned something already, huh?)
Comedy: John Cena Lampoons The University Of Alabama’s Football Players’ Academic Performance On SNL (Video)
Three judges (Beck Bennett, Aidy Bryant, Kenan Thompson) play favorites while reviewing students’ (Mikey Day, Vanessa Bayer, John Cena) projects.
Okay, knowing that @ojones1 is on the squad and that he is an Alabama alum and die-hard Tide fan aside… this is hilarious! Shout to A Tribe Called Quest and Dave Chappelle for getting eyes back onto Saturday Night Live for real back a while ago. So glad to have caught this ep. Damn O-Jeezuz, your school’s athletes research many of those ’round orange bananas’? And banana peel crust for real?? BWAAAAAHAHAAAAA!
But fair is fair. Read the @ojones1 commentary/response/rebuttal/whatev after the jump!
Watch This Record-Breaking 593-Foot Basketball Shot (Video)

55-Year-Old Joe Thomas Sr. Became The Oldest College Football Player To Play In A D-1 Game (Video)
Breaking: 55-year-old Joe Thomas Sr becomes oldest DI football player after rushing for 3 yds for @SCStateAthletic. @wachfox pic.twitter.com/eyoSMpZDBK
— Mike Uva (@Mike_Uva) November 19, 2016
File this under most memorable football plays… Actually, South Carolina State’s Joe Thomas Sr. had a few of them Saturday. To make history, and put a happy ending to his story, all he needed was one. No spectacular break away plays, but I’ll tell you what he did break: any and all notions of what ‘old’ is supposed to look like.
Used to be the only way to see 55 playing football was on a player’s back. No more, thanks to Joe!

Outside The Lines: Greg Oden After His Pro Basketball Career Was Cut Short (Video)
Damn. Greg Oden described himself as ‘the biggest bust in NBA history’ (damn, and damn again). There is a very somber tone to this whole interview. More coming to grips than moving on. Though leaving due to injury and going back to school should be seen as just that.
How would you describe your career now?
I don’t have one right now…
Short and not really sweet. Watch.
When Did Kristaps Porzingis Know He Was Destined To Play In The NBA? (Video)
Every professional athlete has had a particular moment when they realized that the game they were playing wasn’t going to be just a hobby — that they were special and capable of competing with the best in the world. In this installment of “When I Knew,” Kristaps Porzingis remembers the moment when he knew he was more than just another teenager.

Surya Bonaly: The Only Female Skater To Ever Successfully Do A Backflip During Competition (Video)
The best figure skater always wins, unless she’s Surya Bonaly and you are landing a backflip during a competitive run. It is so dangerous, doing it is illegal; and judges heavily penalize competing skaters for doing it. Only four have, successfully; and Surya is the only female of those. Damn shame they only award the ‘dainty’ in such competition. Awarding athleticism is what allows the average sports fan to get into demure sports for more than the “ooh, look how pretty” factor. Thanks to Serena Williams, who is hella sexy AND a beast mode competitor, we can see past the stuffiness of tennis and be amazed at her athleticism. For gymnastics, guys can thank Dominique Dawes, Gabby Douglas and the like for making ogling athletes in barely-there-wear as they go for the gold something they can watch with their gals.
Think Baseball Games Are Too Long? So Does MLB (Video)
Baseball. If you’re a fan, you love it; including all its imperfections… the duration of the game, the pace, the lack of action, etc. But those things will have to be fixed to attract new fans; fans that are not currently ‘into’ the sport. Major League Baseball (MLB) knows. Vox knows. And now there’s a video to let us know. All that’s left is to right the ship or write the sport off as America’s Pastime.
MLB games are now longer than epic movies, but it wasn’t always that way.

…And Of The Son: The Legacy Of David And Jackie Robinson (Mini-Documentary)
David’s story begins by him talking about his going back home to Africa…Tanzania specifically. It’d be an interesting human interest piece if this was just that. But this is a Spike Lee [Lil] Joint. Why the Spike Lee treatment? And why on ESPN? David is activist & baseball legend Jackie Robinson’s son. ESPN’s headline – “Jackie Robinson’s son is a coffee farmer in Tanzania” – rather oversimplifies what this documentary is covering, but it’s a good watch!
Kabaddi World Cup 2016: Iran Vs. USA (Video)
The headline should read: Team USA Gets OWNED At Kabaddi World Cup 2016… But we’ll be back world… We’ll be BACK!
Wow, Kabaddi looks VERY interesting! American sports fans, this could be it! Okay, let’s back up a touch. What you see above is, as the commentator conveys starting around the 9-minute mark, the genesis tenet of a true world sport: “It’s a simple game to understand. Very tough to play.” But watch now, understand a bit of the way in, and understand that this Kabaddi thing is already enjoyed by MILLIONS, already being covered on ESPN3, already being played by teams from nations worldwide, already presenting a World Champion chosen via tournament games… Again, wow! Imagine a sport that has something in it for lovers of football, basketball, soccer…tag…f’n Red Rover… AND ‘Rasslin (yeah, the Greco-Roman stuff but with pro wrestling’s pop appeal)! This Deadspin (respect!) article put it perfectly:
Uh oh. Will Americans actually watch en masse a game not invented in the homeland? Truthfully, such remains to be seen. But if any sport has a legit chance, it is Kabaddi. Bet on it.
(And if and when Vegas starts laying odds on it. It will truly be IN… you can bet on it!)
Definition Of A Down A** Chick: Miko Grimes (Video)
Full disclosure: I really did not know who Miko Grimes was. Not important. Her eventual husband did, and while we might infer that things weren’t always heavenly, hearing her talk about how she rides for him… man… intense! Might even say HOT. Something very ’90s Hip-Hop about this Gangsta Chick. Gotta admit that I like it. Even though I know she’s a handful.
Okay, two handfuls (wink). Do you SEEEEE that top? Fitting her where she’s so gifted. Wowzers!
Suffice it to say, Miko Grimes is the business. But she is well-informed and about her business, so you really gotta hope her man (husband, Brent Grimes, pro ball player) stays on point. Miko’s outspoken on some of everything: from the treatment of NFL players, shutting down groupies and hangers-on, and much more (as shown in the sit-down vid above).
Regarding career ups & downs for her former Falcon, then former Dolphin, hubby Brent, Miko gives her side of those goings down, too. Again I say WOW. Of course, I know Miko would absolutely DESTROY me (I’d fall too hard and stay down). But ohhhh, what a way to go!

Undercover Lyft With David Ortiz (Video)
That is one helluva a wig! It hid Big Papi, in plain sight, from a bunch of Bostonians… who rode right next to him in a Lyft!
See what happens when Boston’s beloved slugger David Ortiz goes behind the wheel as a Lyft driver to surprise passengers. Things we know: Big Papi is just as good at driving on the road as he is in the ballpark. Also, he looks pretty good in a wig.
Bill Simmons Welcomes Guests Nas And Kevin Durant To “Any Given Wednesday” (Video)
Hmm… If you are not up on your “Any Given Wednesday” (hosted by Bill Simmons on HBO) watching, now’s as goo a time as any to catch up. Discussion goes in on everything from tatts to the best b-baller to rap to perhaps a budding “rap-like” beef between guest Kevin Durant and former teammate Russell Westbrook. And you know guest Nas can weigh in on much of that.
And both guests agree… Every basketball player wants to be a rapper. And every rapper wants to be a basketball player. Bill’s got both on here. Great show! Start with the clip above and continue after the jump below.
Roland Martin Chastises Bill O’Reilly For Not Respecting Colin Kaepernick’s Protest (Video)
Uh oh. Colin, you can drop back for a second and let brother Roland put the blitz on Billy [Bob] O’Reilly. Sacked him!! When Roland goes, “So, Bill, DAMN your book,” you KNOW the ‘turn up’ turned the corner!
“Bill, what books are you reading?”
Roland Martin gave Bill O’Reilly a history lesson on patriotism and African Americans.
O’Reilly wants Colin Kaepernick to read his book about patriotism, but Martin, host of NewsOne Now says O’Reilly has it all wrong and offered a series of tiles that O’Reilly should read instead.
Jesse Ventura Salutes Colin Kaeperkick’s National Anthem Protest (Video)
Former governor of Minnesota and veteran of the U.S. Armed Forces, Jesse Ventura, speaks on the Colin Kaepernick controversy above. Some will be surprised at what he has to say. But most who know Ventura will think, “Yeah.”
We asked the former Navy SEAL what he thought about San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick’s decision to protest during the national anthem by taking a knee.
Yeah. Hell yeah! So there is one of your so-called disrespected soldiers ‘Murica. Ventura fought for our right to protest; to take a stand. Or in Kaepernick’s case, a knee. Watch.
Marshawn Lynch On ‘Running Wild With Bear Grylls’ (Trailer)
Tell you what… Marshawn Lynch might be done with pro football, but we are not done watching him go ‘Beast Mode.’ This is a definitely different field of play. But on an outdoor adventure with Bear Grylls, there is not much time for ‘play’ anyway. Watch the trailer for Lynch’s episode of Running Wild With Bear Grylls.
Plucked from a medieval tower along the Corsica coastline, Bear and Super Bowl Champion Marshawn Lynch are dropped deep in a rugged mountain range where they navigate cliffs, dark chasms, and come face-to-face with the secretive French Foreign Legion. Spying a wild hog, the pair pursues the beast, but securing it for dinner will require Marshawn to dig deeper than he ever did on the gridiron. Along the way, Marshawn details his upbringing in Oakland, his “beast” mentality on the field, and his unexpected retirement.
Excuse Me, Young Knight. You Got Knocked The F*ck Out! (Video)
Knockouts during knights’ fights are very rare, but when they happen, they look very impressive!
So… first of all… KNIGHT fights? Where they do that at? Apparently, on M-1 Global – that and all kinds of MMA videos, fights, promo, interviews with fighters on there. Like this one right here. CRAZY fight to the finish: the finish being one dude in armor beating SHIelding off another!
