The Roots Speak About Not Having ‘Yes Men’ during their 25-Year Career, Their New Album, and Bringing Back ‘Soul Train’ (Video)
Black Thought & Questlove of The legendary Roots crew stopped by the ‘Breakfast Club’ to speak upon a variety of topics while promoting their new album “…and then you shoot your cousin.”  This is one of those interviews where the answers were more interesting than the actual questions asked. Questlove & Black Thought managed to touch upon their history & the new album while provide their perspective on contemporary soul & rap music. The Roots also spoke about the sometimes uneasiness when meeting their idols, stressed the importance of not having ‘Yes Men’ in their camp, the social significance & challenges of bringing back ‘Soul Train’, & more.
R&B/Soul: Eric Lau x Tawiah – “Love Call” (EP)
Yep. Small talk is over. Time to put in for the “Love Call.” The EP from Eric Lau and Tawiah is out and available for you now.
DJ Neil Armstrong – “Mi Cheri Amour” (Remix)
DJ Neil Armstrong putting some Hip-Hop sense and sensibility to Stevie Wonder‘s hit “My Cheri Amour.†Listen. Hear that? That’s “The Bridge” from MC Shan in there. And hear that drop in after that? That’s “Grindin†from The Clipse in there, too. With Steveland’s classic track playing all along. Blend-ing (say it like Pharrell would…no one will blame you)!
“In honor of Stevie Wonder, from the mixtape Bittersweeet.”

R&B: Jazmine Sullivan – “Dumb” feat. Meek Mill
That Philly girl Jazmine Sullivan is back with a new single called “Dumb” & she brought another her fellow ‘City Of Brotherly Love’ spitter Meek Mill to provides some additional vocals on this joint. It’s been a minute since we heard something new from Jazmine Sullivan & this one right here works for us. There’s very few young female R&B vocalists her age (26) that have the vocal chops to SANG like she does. After what was a 3-year-hiatus, the Philly songstress rocked a sold-out performance in London recently & is geared up to perform during the Essence Festival’s 20th Anniversary between July 3-6th in New Orleans. Don’t be ‘Dumb’…go ahead & peep her movements on her website below & press play to hear this new jawn!
R&B/Soul: Eric Lau x Tawiah – “Favourite Truth†featuring Kaidi Tatham

R&B/Soul: Denitia x Sene – “Divided.†(Video)
Brooklyn based duo Denitia and Sene released their video for “Divided” – the soulful earful we posted on here. Visuals for “Divided” were directed by Joel Kefali, who was also responsible for Lorde’s “Tennis Courts” and “Royals” videos. Nice work.
Erykah Badu x Hi-Tek – “Honey” (Duncan Gerow Blend)
BamaLoveSoul gave much love and propers to Alaska-based producer, Duncan Gerow, for his latest Erykah Badu / Hi-Tek blend. We give respect to BamaLoveSoul for sharing the wealth and bringing this jewel of a joint to our attention. FREE download below!
Gerow skillfully places Badu’s vocals over one of my favorite Hi-Tek produced beats. It quickly reminded me that Erykah actually did do an official remix to Reflection Eternal‘s lead single “The Blast†but I always felt like I got robbed a little bit cause all she was relegated to were hook duties. So to hear this blend gives my imagination free license to wander/wonder a bit as to what she could have done on this track with a little more leash and leg room.
R&B/Soul: Denitia x Sene – “Divided.”
There’s a period in the title. Artists… we left it there.
New music from Denitia and Sene entitled “Divided.” Produced by Christian Rich. Good stuff as always (explore earlier posts from Denitia and Sene here).
RIP Frankie Knuckles, Legendary DJ And Godfather Of House Music
Senator (now President) Barack Obama, pictured with First Lady Michelle (left) helped declare August 25, 2004, Frankie Knuckles (right) Day in Chicago.
The psalmist wrote, “Weeping may endure for a night, but joy comes in the mourning.” Often, mourners gain comfort from these words; because they remind them that the pain of losing a loved one will not last. But the memories, legacy and love… those should. But first the respect due, demands we take a somber moment, family.
For House heads, dancers, and fans worldwide, it is not ‘breaking’ news so much as heartbreaking news that the
The Huffington Post reported yesterday: “Frankie Knuckles… Godfather of House Music… dies at 59 in Chicago.”
Knuckles remained active until his sudden passing, playing a show just two days before his death.
For the legend, the set has now moved to another venue. Yet, we have much to celebrate and celebrate with here. Take your time, fam. Join the party when you’re ready… after the jump.

DJ Rahdu – “Honey Molasses: Jill Scott Remixes and Covers” (Mixtape)
A nice bunch of covers and conversions of Jill Scott jawns, curated and compiled by the soul selector DJ Rahdu. This “Honey Molasses” is ‘soundtrack of Spring’ indeed!
Jill Scott made a comment during her performance on VH1’s Storytellers about her music selection process that stuck with me – She said that even without her, the music has to have a story of it’s own for her to write to it. Apparently she picks them well; Jill has the uncanny ability to connect to numerous demographics, an uncommon skill in today’s stratified musical climate. “Honey Molasses” is a compilation of the artists that feel that Jill’s songs could somehow help tell their story.

R&B/Soul: Raheem DeVaughn – “Cry Baby” (Video)
“A Place Called Loveland” by Raheem DeVaughn is stacked full of hot R&B tracks. This one, brought to your screen by director James “Kraze” Billings, is no exception. Speaking of stacked… baby in the video had us crying tears of joy!
R&B: Phil Beaudreau – “Anyway” (Video)
Phil Beaudreau continues to impress me with his music ever since I’ve been following his work. In fact, this song ‘Anyway’ produced by Dawaun Parker off of Mr. Beaudreau’s new full-length project “Ether” that’s available now, I first heard in January of 2013. It’s about time the L.A. based singer dropped a visual clip to further propel awareness of his talent as supporters like myself have been playing his music on my radio show & posting various joints up on various websites. Nothing too crazy extravagant with this Charley Mac & Phil Beaudreau self-directed video but even in its minimalism, just like the song itself, it doesn’t take much to really hit home.

R&B: Rochelle Jordan – “Follow Me†(Prod. By KLSH) [Video]
