VICE Presents The Somali Pirates’ Perspective In ‘Fishing Without Nets’ (Trailer)

Okay, “Captain Phillips” you’ve had your say. And, it was a complex story. But the points of view, the heroes and victims, even the nature of the struggle… well, let’s just leave it peace by saying ‘things were askew’ for whatever reasons. Don’t retell your story though. It’s good. Here’s another for your consideration thoughtful movie watchers: “Fishing Without Nets” comes from the pirates’ perspective.

“Fishing Without Nets” follows Abdi, played by Abdikani Muktar, a fisherman who, after pollution spoils the waters generations of his family have counted on for fish, uses the last money he has to smuggle his wife and son out of the country, toward a better life. Desperate to join them, Abdi succumbs to the allure of the quick money to be made as a pirate. His experience as a fisherman gives him the knowledge about shipping lanes that the hijacking party needs. Reluctant, but determined to rejoin his family, Abdi sets off to capture an oil tanker and take its crew hostage.

That’s Right. Joe Is A Homeless Chick Magnet (Video)

Meet Joe. Homeless dude (awww). Self-admitted drunkard (okaaay). Chick magnet (WTF??!). Calls himself a “cardboard all star” but since he’s mastered the art of getting women to take him home with them, perhaps someone should come up with another moniker.

Originally from Boston, Joe, 26, may spend his daylight hours panhandling in Manhattan – making up to $150 on a given day – but his nights are a completely different ballgame. If you don’t think Joe looks homeless, well, that’s only because he’s good at what he does. According to Joe, his only responsibility is to not look homeless. In his mind, his appearance is a survival tactic. Joe spends whatever money he makes on keeping his appearance up, in addition to copious amounts of drugs and booze, with one goal in mind: attract as many girls as possible.
– Elite Daily

Okay, so by now you might be thinking Joe is a good-for-nothing-but-getting-drunk-laid-and-paid (whether that is good or bad thing… your call). But landing his next… er… “sponsor” is a matter of survival for Joe. Doing so three to four nights a week likely gets him hot showers and evenings off the streets. Watch and learn.

Vinyl Destination | Ep. 18 “Lessons With Jazz” On Season 2 With The Magnificent DJ Jazzy Jeff (Video)

Can I ask you a question… Was it a good fade?
DJ Ferno

DJ Ferno gets called onto the carpet (er… couch) for a DJ Jazzy Jeff post-show reprimand. Evaluations are evaluations, wherever you work, right? Nah. You probably don’t get a camera shoved in your face the whole time your boss is giving you the talkin’ to… and you don’t likely get a real opportunity to land a ‘counter’ like Ferno did. Haa! Even getting ‘dressed down’ on these Vinyl Destination eps is classic.

It’s all about IMPACT people. Remember that ya young’ns!

Keep watching though: The crew did a double in Manchester, then get over to Preston, UK. Jeff giving love to fans and they mans’n’em, meeting and greeting and signing stuff along the way. Skillz with his commentary added in. Prepare to chuckle.

(Notice how Jeff wouldn’t make the hand gesture he did not understand for the one fan’s pic. That’s not “being rude”… actually, it’s being smart… never know who you may offend, or if you are misrepresenting yourself in some way doing things like that just because someone asks. Careful people! Lots of laughs AND lessons in this episode. Enjoy!)

Kingdoms of Africa: West Africa (Documentary)

Incredible BBC Four documentary presentation. Frames West African history as an arc of time and development with timeless elements that exist in culture today as they did centuries earlier. Among the topics woven into this video are matters and practices regarding faith and worship, royalty and society, engineering and architecture, travel and trade, politics and war, and especially the arts are covered. Right from the start, the importance of the arts (including storytelling and recorded history) and craftsmanship as ways of marking time and linking present to past Africa is established.

In Benin, it seems history isn’t written by the victors. It’s written by the artists.

So much good content. Watch and digest thoroughly. This not just African history… this is world history!

People were using pottery here 8,000 years before it appeared in Great Britain… When West Africans began developing the skills that would eventually create some of the most exquisite art in the world, Europe was just emerging from the last Ice Age.

The Game – “Bigger Than Me”

8gFOc0s

So, we’ve been posting on the 2014 XXL Freshmen… because it’s good stuff. Everybody ain’t gotta agree. Some can even take shots. But none like the Game. Check out the venom spit on this diss track – “Bigger Than Me.” Actually seems like a broad shot at the whole lot of relative Hip-Hop newcomers. Like a battle invitation to whoever want it.

“Fuck all these p*ssies. Gimme any name to call out!”

Shots Fired: Rush Limbaugh Disses #BringBackOurGirls And Jon Stewart Slams Him For It (Video)

President Goodluck Jonathan of Nigeria, pressured into action by ‘hashtag activism’ on Twitter recently, now has help from several nations to save more than 200 schoolgirls held hostage by Boko Haram terrorists. #BringBackOurGirls our girls has been trending worldwide, bringing and maintaining attention on the issue. Good, right? I mean, the terrorists are the bad guys; but you MUST be a genuine azzjack of a bad guy to hate on the movement, right?

Enter Rush Limbaugh, azzjack. On his radio show, the conservative host ripped the effort, even calling a photo of First Lady Michelle Obama with a #BringBackOurGirls sign “pathetic.”

Oh…my…damn! Did Limbaugh just slam a humanitarian movement AND diss our beloved First Lady? Sure did. But don’t worry. Jon Stewart got him; as you’ll see in the Comedy Central ‘Daily Show’ clip above. In fact, by the show’s end, Stewart had set off a Twitter trend of his own – a message for Limbaugh: #F*@KYOURUSH.

(Even more important, Jon had some heartfelt words for the real G’s caught up in this horror story; the captive Nigerian girls who knowingly risked life and everything daily to get educated and empowered.)

HBO: Real Time With Bill Maher Welcomes Nas (Video)

I knew Bill Maher would ask Nas about his collaboration record with Jay Z called “Black Republican.” When the song first came out I knew it wasn’t titled properly in my opinion, but if you’re an astute listener then you know that Nas has never said he feels like a “Black Republican.” in the song. While Jay Z was proclaiming to feel like a “Black Republican,” Nas made it clear in the songs chorus that he leans on the side of the “Black Militant” taking over the government. Nas didn’t throw Jay Z under the bus in his explanation to Bill Maher, but he played it off well. I think that maybe Bill Maher asked this question on purpose to see if Nas would throw Jay Z under the bus.

The ‘Scratch DJ Academy’ Opens up a New School Chapter In Atlanta (The @KoolKila Report)

DSC09288After three years of consideration and strategic planning, the world-renown Scratch DJ Academy has now opened a new school chapter in Atlanta, GA. Saturday, February 15th, Scratch DJ Academy held an open house for it’s new facility located within the SAE Institute. The event was packed with aspiring students, industry professionals and music enthusiasts of all kinds. Founded in 2002 in New York City, NY, by Jam Master Jay (hip hop pioneer and DJ for Run DMC), Scratch DJ Academy continues to attract individuals interested in learning the fundamentals of DJing. Several chapters have already been established in the United States, including Los Angeles, Chicago, Miami, and now Atlanta. After students successfully complete courses, they can receive certification for their education. Professionals already established in the business can also take courses to update themselves about the latest technologies for DJs. Hosted by instructor DJ Hapa and other academy employees, visitors were able to see the musical gear used in classes, meet new employees, and witness live DJ performances. DJ Hapa also hosted a panel discussion to introduce a few of the instructors for the school, including Atlanta veterans DJ Jaycee, DJ Jelly, and DJ Sky. Another contemporary favorite in Atlanta, DJ Sofa King Evil, was on hand to introduce himself as well. Classes are slated to begin in March. For more information, visit: www.scratch.com. Travel: The World’s Nicest Prisons (Video)

If you live in the U.S., nine times out of ten, you or someone you know has been to jail… even if it’s not JAIL jail (e.g. prison). They might have come out with that dismissive steely-eyed thug life declaration, “Jail ain’t sh!t.”

And you, knowing better, didn’t believe a word. You know jail SUCKS. But traveling outside the U.S. and getting incarcerated in one of these facilities… well… you could do worse. Some might say the prisoners of these facilities live in relative luxury. Of course, no prison can be considered “luxury accommodations” because, by definition, imprisonment takes away the one accommodation we all supposedly have from birth – LIBERTY.

That’s as deep as this post gets. I swear.

Above: Watch a “promo clip” for the ‘world’s nicest prison’ (in Norway) with clips for some runners-up embedded after the jump.

VICE: The Florida Mandingos (Documentary) [NSFW]

Although swinging culture in Atlanta is something I’m told is growing I can readily admit it’s a lifestyle that’s not for me. The racial element to interracial swinging is also one that is not that easy for many to comprehend as well, but in this ‘Vice Guide To Sex’ documentary we ran across featuring a Florida man by the name of Art Hammer, he attempts put into perspective as to why any man would be comfortable with another man having sex with his wife & the racial elments of the lifestyle. VICE reporter Alex Miller covers all the kinky angles for this story for VBS.TV. Although this is a news piece some of the video & content, although blurred out, is still strong & graphic so therefore it may Not be Safe For Work.

“VICE follows Art on a road trip leading up to a ‘Hot Chocolate’ party he’s hosting at a purpose built sex bungalow called the Shangri Lust. Along the way we meet the key players who make up the lifestyle: the insatiable wives and their cuckolded white husbands obsessed with sex with black men, and Art’s A-team, the crème de la crème of [The Florida] Mandingos.”

Founder Ali Mahmoud Speaks On Alif Laam Meem – America’s First Muslim Fraternity (Video)

This looks interesting.

Ali Mahmoud shares the origins story of AΛM, aka Alif Laam Meem, the first and only nationwide Muslim fraternity in the United States. Though the things that come to mind typically associated with fraternity life probably turn off most followers of Islam, Founder and Executive President Mahmoud provides insight on the organization and why it might benefit those who belong to it.

“Why would any Muslim want to join a fraternity? …There’s some really good connections that build up over time in a fraternity… Some great leaders, Martin Luther King, was part of a fraternity. And just the human need to make friends… there was a void that needed to be filled… some kind of way for a Muslim male… [to live a] lifestyle that is synthesized with an organic college social experience.”

Ali Mahmoud

You can learn more about AΛM by visiting the frat’s website – almfrat.com – and by watching the information brief after the jump.
