Watch Sunday’s NYC #GoTopless Parade 2016 (Video)

You know how folks say, “It is what it is.” Here it, well, they are what it is all about. Naked breasts… all the way down to the nipple… all throughout the streets of Manhattan, New York, and [actually] various other places in the U.S.A. It is a peaceful protest for women’s rights to not be criminalized if they choose to go topless. Currently, men can; and it is no big thing (no big law against it).

On August 28, 2016, the women’s rights organization GoTopless held Go Topless Pride Parades and other events in New York, Los Angeles and over 60 other cities worldwide for the 9th annual GoTopless Day.

Surprising thing you will realize moments after watching: It’s just another parade… not even a protest. They’re boobs; women’s and men’s. Some folks are even pushing strollers. Perhaps, the biggest thing to gawk at is how this whole event is a relative non-event… perhaps, as it should be.

(Of course, I have NO problem admitting that I clicked to see some big ole breasteses… but that’s just me, I’m sure.)

Why Racism Isn’t Just a Southern Problem (Video)

Sure, Harriet Tubman led slaves away from the South to escape slavery… the Jim Crow and Civil Rights black & white photos and videos show the South as the true ‘home’ of racism… BUT, let Franchesca Ramsey hip you to fact that racism ain’t just in the South good buddy!

While the stereotypical racist in the US might be a southern good ole boy, the reality is that “progressive” Northern and Western states have had a pretty long and terrible history with racism as well. Whether it’s the history of sundown towns that threatened violence against people of color if they were found there after dark, the incredibly racist founding of Oregon, or the long history of redlining to prevent home ownership, it seems like racism certainly wasn’t and isn’t just a southern phenomenon.

Go Franchesca! Comedy Central’s The Nightly Show was cancelled, but you’ve got too much to share with the world to stop now. No joke. Keep it pushing!

DemocracyNow Presents: Michael Eric Dyson vs. Eddie Glaude, Race, Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama’s Presidency And More (Video)

Great interview (slash moderated debate-type discussion) featuring Eddie Glaude and Michael Eric Dyson by DemocracyNow. Strap in for some informative, intellectual exploration of approaches to the Democratic platform, President Obama’s actions and legacy, Former Secretary and Presidential candidate Clinton’s past and anticipated actions should she ascend to U.S. Commander-In-Chief, and SO MUCH MORE!

On Wednesday night, President Obama addressed the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia and implored the nation to vote for Hillary Clinton. As Obama seeks to pass the torch to his Secretary Of State, we host a debate on Hillary Clinton, her rival Donald Trump and President Obama’s legacy between Princeton University professor Eddie Glaude and Georgetown University professor Michael Eric Dyson. Glaude’s most recent book is “Democracy in Black: How Race Still Enslaves the American Soul,” and he recently wrote an article for Time magazine headlined “My Democratic Problem with Voting for Hillary Clinton.” Dyson is the author of “The Black Presidency: Barack Obama and the Politics of Race in America” and wrote a cover article for the New Republic titled, “Yes She Can: Why Hillary Clinton Will Do More for Black People Than Obama.”

Of the two, I agree with Eddie Glaude. Just getting that out there.

Bill Maher Says That Police Culture Has To Change (Video)

Above: Bill Maher tells Stephen Colbert that we need policing as a society. He values the police and denounces shooting of police, like most, BUT he understands why police got shot at this point.

You can only look at so many videos of shooting unarmed Black people. I’m surprised it didn’t happen before.

Wow. Then Colbert follows up with a quote from the late President John F. Kennedy: “Those who make peaceful revolution impossible make violent revolution inevitable.” Then Maher goes in further: Police culture – attracting the wrong types of people, protecting wrongdoers within their ranks, not administering true justice when wrongdoers are caught, even the training – HAS to change!

Yeah. By this point in the evening, the funny part of the show was over, as Maher declared.

(Well, actually, they got in some more joke pokes… some at each other… but, trust, the serious power of what was said was not diminished.)

Incredible conversation The Late Show. Colbert keeps bringing thoughtful TV to CBS; while allowing what needs to be said to be said. Watch.

Rant, Rebuttal, Reconciliation: Wendy Williams Apologizes And Invites Roland Martin To Speak On HBCUs & The NAACP (Video)

Two media power-movers get together and ensure the ooh’s and ah’s are not the last thing we get out of the swirl of fiery commentary that came from Wendy Williams’ rant – then Roland’s rebuttal – on HBCUs (Historically Black Colleges & Universities) and National Association for the Advancement of Colored People. See all that build up after the jump. What’s most important though… is that they got together on Wendy’s couch, reached an accord, and ensured knowledge was shared! Good use of a powerful platform.

“News One Now” host Roland S. Martin sits down with Wendy to talk about her remarks about Historically Black Colleges and the NAACP. Then, Roland weighs in on race in America, police brutality and the Black Lives Matter movement. Plus, Roland weighs in on how to talk to our kids about these issues.

Activism: 23 Ways You Could Be Killed If You Are Black in America (Video)

Remember when Chris Rock did the comedic PSA “How To Not Get Your Ass Kicked By The Police” on his show years ago? No? We’re not surprised. With the passage of time AND all the police involved tragedy going on today, who can remember? And with all the unwarranted KILLING happening to us, it is really hard to laugh anymore. Crazy thing is… there seems to be NOTHING we can do to GUARANTEE living through a police encounter nowadays. Truth is, the time for folly is at an end. Hence the #WeAreHere Movement and the video above.

Beyoncé, Alicia Keys, Rihanna, Jennifer Hudson, Pink, Bono, and others explain why it’s time to take action to heal the long history of systemic racism in America. #23Ways

Killer Mike Speaks On His Anger And Fears In The Wake Of More Police Killings Of Black People (Video)

Without fail, Killer Mike is ALWAYS speaking poingnantly with passion about matters affecting the people… his people. Sometimes it’s a wonder how he keeps answering the call to speak. Frustration we all feel, way before he and those of like mind began to #FeelTheBern

This is all truth. No slick talk and no backtracking. Notice how he does not have to couch his statements in the typical ‘all cops are not bad’ rhetoric, because he is out there with the police in his town – forging relationships, ensuring that they will feel/be compelled to protect & serve in his community. He touches on that. He has not abandoned talk on political movements we need to make either: VOTE out the folks who refuse to look out for the people in the community… VOTE THEM OUT! And he continues to bang the drum for a show of Black economic power: Want to move those in power, move your money away from them and toward folks you wish to empower.

None of this is new, but Killer Mike keeps speaking it. As frustrating as it must be. The truth is easy to repeat; because it’s not a ‘platform’ or something he has to ‘make up’ or remember. Watch Mike Render speak on his fears and frustrations with the two recent tragic losses of two Black Lives that did not Matter to cops who took them.

Roseanne for President (Trailer)

Here I go… Running for President…
I’m the only serious comedian in this race…
I wasn’t shut up by networks… I won’t be shut up here…
Roseanne Barr

Yep. Rosanne is making a run for the White House for real. She is seriously on the campaign trail, and why, even at first glance, is that any more ridiculous than a Trump 2016 run?

Follow comedy legend Roseanne Barr as she embarks on a wild, hilarious, and impassioned campaign for the highest office in the land. It’s 2012 and Barr, fed up with corporate influence in politics, takes matters into her own hands when she launches a third-party Presidential bid founded on grassroots activism. Hitting the campaign trail, the sarcastic, opinionated, and outspoken Barr makes for a candidate unlike any other as she brings her message to the people. Featuring appearances from Michael Moore, Sandra Bernhard, Rosie O’Donnell, and others close to Barr, Roseanne for President! is both a rousing David vs. Goliath tale and a revealing portrait of a cultural icon.
– IFC Films

Now, of course, Rosanne is a comedian first; so there will surely be ‘funny’ in here. But this trailer is teasing an underlying story that looks to make you do a second take. Watch.

(Due out July 1, 2016.)

State of Surveillance (Documentary)

Damn. Privacy is an illusion. That’s not the future; that’s NOW. If anyone would know, it’s former NSA’er, current whistleblower in exile, Edward Snowden. And if anyone can get at the core of the story, it’s VICE.

When NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden leaked details of massive government surveillance programs in 2013, he ignited a raging debate over digital privacy and security. That debate came to a head this year, when Apple refused an FBI court order to access the iPhone of alleged San Bernardino Terrorist Syed Farook. Meanwhile, journalists and activists are under increasing attack from foreign agents. To find out the government’s real capabilities, and whether any of us can truly protect our sensitive information, VICE founder Shane Smith heads to Moscow to meet the man who started the conversation, Edward Snowden.

What Does The Future Look Like For Black People? (Mini-Documentary)

So dope! Afrofuturism. A way for Black people to see themselves in a bright future, almost in stark opposition to what most art forms hold for them. Seems like just what the people crave, has always been here… in our music. While movies and television beyond, say, Star Trek and the like, leave us out of the bright future, there is incredible music that puts us front, center, Black and strong!

Black people are rarely featured in sci-fi and fantasy films — that is, unless that Black person is Will Smith. How do Black people get to exist in the future? Afrofuturism, a scholarly and artistic movement that imagines the future through Black people’s experiences is one answer. The term was coined in 1994 by culture critic Mark Dery in his “Black to the Future” essay.

Parliament, Dr. Dre, Andre 3K, Janelle Monae… yeah, our music Afrofuturists are a good look… and help us look forward to a good place in the future!

Driving While Black in New Jersey (Documentary)

A new report from Seton Hall Law School Center for Policy & Research has found that in the majority-white municipality of Bloomfield, New Jersey, nearly 80 percent of traffic tickets are issued to African American and Latino drivers.

The report also found that most tickets were issued to non-resident minority drivers passing through town, suggesting a “de facto border patrol” policing policy is in effect.

The Bloomfield Police Department — which has begun collecting data on the race of drivers in traffic stops as of January 2016 — rejects the report’s findings.

VICE News reports on Seton Hall’s methodology and on the experience of minority drivers in Bloomfield.
