Young Guru Speaks On Piracy vs. Invention in Hip-Hop (Video)

Young Guru has mixed most of Jay-Z’s albums over the years. He has been Jay-Z’s tour D.J. for years. Safe to say he knows a thing or two about Hip-Hop. Well, the NY Hip-Hop aficionado goes in-depth on the thin line between piracy and invention in the genre.

“When we study hip-hop we are actually studying the history of piracy. If we go back and study all piracy, we see that most things that were created in the world are a remix of something else.”

– Young Guru

Now, don’t let that quote make you defensive Hip-Hop heads. Watch as Young Guru takes us on a journey of modern human history referencing the history of Hip-Hop to show how our ‘remixing’ things in industry over time is good for all overall… we just have to address some tough questions of who owns what, who should should get paid, what we consider ‘piracy’ (versus ‘new creation’) and more. Very interesting.

It has been said that ‘there is nothing new under the sun.’ Play the video clip above, and watch more after the jump, to get Young Guru’s application of that in the study of Hip-Hop.

Illastrate – “PENGO / I Don’t Brag”

Illastrate PengoCheck out this new digital ’12 from one of my favorite producers Illastrate featuring a gang of dope emcees. PENGO is a posse cut featuring Yamin Semali, Boog Brown, Joe D, Flux Da Wondabat, Lex Boogie From the Bronx, and Gotta Be Karim.  The “B” side is a track with Willi Du Dat, Joe D, and Yamin Semali. Two dope tracks! Atlanta based hip hop fans will instantly recognize the intro featuring the homie JAX from Binkis Recs who first coined the term “Pengo” years before his passing.

Live From London: A Conversation With 9th Wonder

The Doctor’s Orders recently hosted an event with 9th Wonder and Rapsody at Plan B in Brixton, London. There was a screening for the film about 9th Wonder called ‘The Wonder Year’ followed with performances by Chris P Cuts, Spin Doc, 9th Wonder and Rapsody.

This is a short clip of the night + the brief interview I had with 9th Wonder on that night. It was great to finally meet him as he is one of my all time favorite hip hop producers as well as seeing Rapsody perform who in my opinion is one of the best MCs out there at the moment.”

Black Milk – Demo Beats 2012

Detroit producer & emcee Black Milk took to his soundcloud page to release some of the beats he’s cooked up for 2012 for his fans’ audio consumption. It’s about time we heard something from Black Milk who seemed to be rather quiet for most of the year. I’m still hoping he drops an official song & video for that ‘Don Cornelius’ joint he teased us with a while back. After listening sitting here listening to these instrumental demo joints, the track that catches my attention the most occurs around the 2:50 mark. That’s that gritty Detroit hip hop most of us fiend for. Black Milk has to stop disappearing like this. I’d like to see Black Milk put out more videos from past albums while in between projects to hold fans over until the new stuff is done. Until he does I guess these demo instrumentals should suffice for how.

Marley Marl Recreates The ‘Classic Recipe’ For “Eric B. Is President” by Eric B. & Rakim (Video)

Damn! Has it been 25 years already?? Guess so. But what was dope then will be dope again… especially the way Marley Marl put it down on “Eric B. Is President!” Check out the super producer putting together another ‘Classic Recipe’ in the video above!

‘In the second installment of Marley Marl “Classic Recipes,” he shows you how he produced “Eric B. Is President” in 1986, the debut single for legendary hip hop duo Eric B. & Rakim. Marl talks about meeting Rakim for the first time and discusses the collaborative process with Eric B. that would yield one of the most influential Hip-Hop tracks ever. “Eric B. Is President” combines a bassline from Fonda Rae’s bonafide 1982 club hit “Over Like a Fat Rat” and a beat from James Brown’s 1974 hit “Funky President.”

– DubSpot

‘Limitations made us who we are.’ (Marl spoke truth with that…speaking on making a CLASSIC with only 4 tracks. No high tech; just superior SKILLS!)

SKI BEATZ Speaks on Success, Cereal, and More with Montreality (Video)

This Montreality interview was pretty dope. SKI BEATZ answered some of the show’s usual questions… the type of student he was, how he spent his 1st big paycheck, the key to success, … etc. etc. But then he gets into karate movies, cartoons, favorite cereals… and it’s ON! Finishes strong with his music – past, present, and future – and the legacy he hopes to leave… his music and kids. GREAT interview. Well worth the watch. Get to it.

House Shoes Breaks Down J Dilla – “Feelin Good”

Bling47 brings us a super rare Slum Village/ J Dilla treat. Previously unreleased music. By unreleased, we mean aside from a handful of folks (most at Slum Village shows in the 1990s), NO ONE has experienced it. As our guide, Detroit producer House Shoes takes us through the music in this video Bling47 calls “Feelin Good” (filmed, edited, and animated by Waajeed)…referencing a rare J Dilla cover of “Feelin Good” (a song made famous by Nina Simone).

Cardiak – “The Emergency Room” Vol. 1 (Instrumentals)

New Jersey’s own producer extraordinaire Cardiak has released his first all-instrumental download, “The Emergency Room” Vol. 1, featuring music for “Lean Wit It,” “600 Benz,” “Start It Up,” “Outlaw,” and more.  The Willingboro, New Jersey (outside of Philadelphia) based producer is definitely seeing his stock rise so he’s letting loose some freebies for the emcees to get busy over or for those of us who dig his beats. My favorite is the ‘Lean Wit It’ joint he produced for Meek Mill. Also included in his new mixtape are beats that have never been heard prior to this release. Get “The Emergency Room” Vol. 1 by Cardiak right here or listen to the beats from the project below…
