R&B/Alternative: The Supremes – “Stop! In The Name Of Love” (Yoroku Saki Remix)

Supremes2000fOkay, so take the Supreme’s joint and slow it down to a moan. Then simplify and air out the track with synth and chimes. That’ll work.

‘Here’s a gift from me to you! Enjoy!’ – Yoroku Saki

So… what do you think? Not much on Saki on the interwebs yet. Peeped the Facebook page About section and got ‘I manipulate air particles.’ Oookay. Interesting sounds on his ‘Cloud though.

‘So after so many requests from my Twitter, Facebook & Instagram Family, i’ve decided to take a shot at this Suit & Tie Remix but what really made it a “Must Do” is the fact that i’m a big Jay Z fan and the way they changed the beat on the original made Jay Z’s verse sound horrible so that was my main objective here and i now personally feel that i’ve done the homie Hov justice….. lol Enjoy people.’ – DJ Ted Smooth

Lex Boogie x Goldi Gold – “Sharks In The Golden Pond” (EP)

3016091063-1I had dope producer Lex Boogie & the outstanding visual artist Goldi Gold to speak on their collaborative instrumental project “Sharks In The Golden Pond” last Saturday during The Beatz & Lyrics Show. We’ll have audio of that interview posted very soon, but listen, download, & check out a brief synopsis of the project below….

“Conceptually the project can best be described as a ‘visual instrumental’.  Lex Boogie from the Bronx, known for his soulfully, raw, Boom bap, , drum kicks and snares hails from his name sake, the boogie down Bronx. Artist Goldi gold best known for his staple life like, one of a kind graphic illustrations hails from New Jersey. When the two got together in Atlanta they immediately saw the value in each others work and shared a similar work ethic. The project maybe the perfect instrument to take you from the freeze of this past winter to the unpredictability of the Spring. Collaboratively this project is symbolic to the drive and vision of these two talented Hip Hop heads.”

The trio discussed all things related to DJ’ing, from Jeff’s background to how he became one of the most in-demand DJ’s in the world, including his philosophy on a DJ’s responsibility, the rise of DJ’s in popular music (while it seems to wither within hip-hop), and whether or not “real DJ’s” should take requests. He also told stories about the early days of his work with Will Smith, transitioning from rocking parties in Philly with the Fresh Prince to selling millions of albums and touring worldwide.”KUBE Sound Session

Marco Polo feat. Big Daddy Kane – “Nite & Day’

marco-polo-newport-authority-500x500It was just a few days ago we posted new joint from producer Marco Polo featuring the God Rakim called ‘What’s Wrong’. He’s back with another gem called ‘Nite & Day’ with another hip hop legend in Big Daddy Kane. This particular joint finds the ill producer flipping Al B. Sure’s 1988 R&B classic  ‘Nite & Day’ while BDK spits the appropriate bars to make this joint pop properly. This joint will appear on Marco Polo’s forthcoming free-LP “Newport Authority 2” as Marco states “I’ve recorded so much quality material over the last few years and I really want to share it all. It couldn’t all possibly fit on “Port Authority 2”; hence “Newport Authority 2” came to be.”

Marley Marl Recreates The ‘Classic Recipe’ For MC Shan’s ‘The Bridge’ (Video)

In this episode of Classic Recipes, the legendary producer explains and demonstrates how he created the beat for MC Shan’s “The Bridge,” one of the most memorable beats in hip hop history. As always, along with the beat programming tips and composition/production techniques he also gives us the lowdown on where and when the music was originally created.

Marl recalls the moment he first met MC Shan and recorded “Marley Marl Scratch,” and also remembers when legendary rap radio personality Mr. Magic rejected a Boogie Down Productions record that was submitted for airplay on WBLS-FM, later resulting in the feud between the South Bronx crew and Marl’s Juice Crew.

“The Bridge” was originally created using the Roland TR-808 Rhythm Composer and the Korg SDD-2000 Sampling Digital Delay. Marley Marl programmed the beat by triggering drum sounds (the kick and snare) from the TR-808 into the SDD-2000, giving the track a unique sound and feel.

In this video he recreates the beat using the Akai MPC Renaissance; instead of just sampling The Honey Drippers’ track “Impeach The President” intro drum beat, Marley completely reprogrammed the beat from the kick and snare right down to the “Ladies and gentlemen” voice intro. Along with adding some ghost notes, he reversed The Magic Disco Machine’s “Scratching'” record to create the stabs and gritty noises you hear at the beginning of “The Bridge.” – Dubspot

Marco Polo feat. Rakim – “What’s Wrong”

artworks-000042460260-ztwfhb-original“What’s Wrong,” was initially produced and recorded for Rakim’s “Seventh Seal” (2009) LP, but due to clearance issues was nixed from the retail release of the project. It has since sat dormant until Rakim gave the track back to Marco and he decided to use it for his forthcoming free-LP “Newport Authority 2” as Marco states “I’ve recorded so much quality material over the last few years and I really want to share it all. It couldn’t all possibly fit on “Port Authority 2”; hence “Newport Authority 2” came to be.”

“Newport Authority 2” will feature appearances from Rakim, Big Daddy Kane, Artifacts, Das Efx, Lil Fame (M.O.P.), Torae & Ruste Juxx all rocking over Marco’s production.

Yet, the project everyone should really be excited for is Marco’s “Port Authority 2” LP which will be released this spring on Soulspazm Records. “Port Authority 2” features appearances from Organized Konfusion (yes, a new Oragnized Konfusion track!!), Gangrene, Talib Kweli, DJ Premier, Masta Ace, Posdnuos (De La Soul), Kardinal Offishal, Styles P, Nature, Rah Digga, Slaine, Celph Titled, Ill Bill, Large Professor, Inspectah Deck, O.C. & many many more.

Illastrate – “Henny Loggins Show” (EP)

2131335829-1Atlanta based producer Illastrate is one of ‘illest’ producers who’s been consistently releasing quality product on the low for a while now. His masterful & often soulful production credits continues to grow albeit rather quietly to the larger mainstream audiences.  As much as he’s known throughout the Atlanta true school & soul scene for his tracks he’s almost equally known amongst those in the know for the wild alter-egos he employs such as “Hoodie Allen” & of course his latest alias inspired by songwriter Kenny Loggins & his love for Hennessy to become “Henny Loggins”.  Wasn’t surprised when he chose the latest moniker for ‘SEASON 1’ as the title of the new project series featuring artists Ekundayo, Boog Brown, Stanza, Mike Flo, Yamin Semali, Arablak, & more. If you just want to vibe out to his dope tracks minus all the vocals, Illastrate also provided an instrumental version of the project as well. Listen or download the joints below….
