Activism: Killer Mike Speaks On Mike Brown’s Killing, What It Means To All Americans And More (Video)
See? When your music speaks truth, you get called on to speak truth. See how CNN’s Brooke Baldwin even mentioned the “Reagan” video (got that one here)? She knows. Killer Mike should speak on matters like Mike Brown and Ferguson. Father, husband, SON OF A POLICEMAN, concerned member of the human race… Killer Kill From Adamsville has much to say, and man, he said it! The next eleven minutes of your life should be spent watching this video (above) right here, right NOW!
If this police officer is not arrested… rioting… tears… pain… But what really happens… is all of our rights are thrown out the window. I am afraid for all Americans. I’m not just afraid for Black Americans… We as a people have to be more vigilant about policing the people we pay to protect and serve us…
That about it, people. It ain’t just the cops. Quis custodiet ipsos custodes? It’s US! WE have to step up! We have to vote in LOCAL officials (sheriffs, councilpersons and alderman, and other officials) and participate in (and/or institute) watch-dogging so cops know that ‘policing’ goes both ways. More than that though, we need to develop solid, respect-driven relationships with police authorities; just as Killer Mike (with his barber shop) has. That does NOT excuse cops abusing their authority, but our steps toward revolution should bear in mind that we seek resolution. And building relationships that deescalate abuse of authority, and build respect and care for the community into the citizen-officer relationship is a necessary part of the resolution.

Punchlines That Sting: Comedian John Oliver Delivers Biting Commentary on The Mike Brown Shooting & Subsequent Protests (Video)
Comedian John Oliver put on a clinic on how you deliver stinging social commentary as thinly veiled comedy. VERY thinly veiled. On the last episode of his Last Week Tonight show on HBO, he spent a huge chunk of the show talking all things Ferguson. The delivery vehicle – a satirical news-formatted TV broadcast – puts viewers (except for hardened Conservatives dead set against the Liberal-leaning Brit they know from Comedy Central’s The Daily Show With Jon Stewart) in a “hey-you-gotta-be-able-to-laugh-at-things” mode to start. He expertly pulls some chuckles in his segment about the recent events – Mike Brown’s fatal shooting by Ferguson (Missouri) cops, the brutality and militarization of American police departments, etc. But he kept raising the temperature on the presentation until his beef with the entire situation was well cooked. Smoke. Fire. BURN!
Sure, we laugh. But it ain’t funny. John knows…and he let the viewer know he knows this is some bullsh!t.
Cover Story: Park Security Officer Pepper Sprays, Handcuffs, And Removes A Man From A Protest… Who Was Not Protesting And Never Threw A Punch (Video)
Okay, even if you have NO idea what happened before the cam started capturing this action… you can tell the officers got this wrong. Like pepper-spraying-an-innocent-bystander wrong! Then rough-handle him wrong… then whisk him away, retreating into a “private” building wrong.
Demonstrators protest the violence in Gaza during a pro Palestine rally in Seattle. As protestors lined the sidewalks in Westlake Park, a pro Israel supporter walks by, harassing the demonstrators, yelling in peoples faces, screaming obscenities, and racial slurs. After crossing the street and harassing another group of demonstrators, the man tore off his shirt and began walking towards the group with fists clenched. As someone who wasn’t a part of the demonstration walked by, the pro Israel supporter turned and said something as he passed. The man then turned around as if he was going to swing, but thought better of it. The pro Israel supporter squared off with him, but a Westlake security guard who was watching the interaction pulled out his pepper spray, and sprayed the innocent passerby, grabbed him by the arm and tried to wrestle him to the ground. He was eventually led off into Westlake Center as SPD arrived on the scene.
A subset of the photos taken documenting the moments before the video are included after the jump (source). THEN go back and watch the video again. Let it sink in. Then Google this phrase:Â quis custodiet ipsos custodes? And watch it again.
I thought I’d make a crack about out of control security officers being frustrated for not being ‘real’ cops; not having real guns. Then I thought:
- I don’t hate on anyone doing her/his job (and some security officers actually do their jobs)
- I am SO glad that ALL the officer had was pepper spray (another gun on another authority figure could’ve meant another Black man dead in this case).

Activism/Education: The NDAA Explained In 3 Minutes (Video)
Think all you had to worry about regarding your life and liberty in the United States were possible unknown risks inherent to your food supply, and very known instances of police brutality? Think again. This mini-expo video should give you a quick shake and smack to wake you up to the real dangers of having government-sanctioned arrests, extractions, and detainment without due process (per the National Defense Authorization Act) and nearly no real oversight. This is part of the not-so-beautiful half Homeboy Sandman rapped about America…
Regardless of where on this planet you live, and no matter what your nationality, the fact that the indefinite detention provisions of the NDAA are still on the books, should disturb you on a fundamental level. If not, give it three minutes.

John Oliver Slams America’s Slammers: The Prison System Is ‘Horribly Broken’ (Video)
Former member of the late night tongue-in-cheek commentative cabal over at Comedy Central (you know, folks like Jon Stewart and Jessica Williams of The Daily Show and Stephen Colbert of The Colbert Report)… John Oliver has been loosed on the HBO audience; where he’s making even more biting wisecracks. Letting them have it!
Here’s yet another occasion to unleash the cracking Kraken – spotlighting America’s broken penal system.
On the episode of Last Week Tonight with John Oliver embedded above, the host spent about a third of his show’s run-time on how broken America’s prison system is. In essence, tearing some a-holes some new a-holes. Oliver dropped science and atomic bombs… America having more imprisoned than China, the rampant amount of prison rape, the abysmal medical care and maggots in the food (as contractors cut costs beyond the bone), folks copping pleas to avoid prison instead of defending themselves in court as is their legal right… all wrong, wrong, wrong!
Tie the tirade together with a Sesame Street styled clip; and you’ve got a winner. Realize though that in the midst of the joking, how disproportionate the number of people of color vs. Whites end up in the hell we call prison…and you’ll understand that the U.S. has got a loser… its prison system!
JFK: The Private President (Trailer)
Most consider the Kennedys to be the closest thing to American royalty we have had in the States. Likely why so much mystique surrounds them; and why we are compelled to watch when someone brings a story about them to the small or big screen. Most are very worthy of the attention, especially the ones about John F. (JFK); and it looks like “JFK: The Private President” will not drop the ball either. Saw this covered in Rolling Out magazine.
Koch Brothers Exposed (Documentary)
David and Charles Koch (pronounced like ‘Coke’), the oil industry’s billionaire brothers that pretty much powered the Tea Party Movement and the recent emergence of the Republican Party’s ‘return to true Conservatism.’ You’d think that most Republicans would position themselves in the ‘it is what it is’ or say ‘I approve this message’ camps. Most do. But viewer-supported news network says “Koch Brothers Exposed” is “The Chilling New Documentary Republicans Don’t Want You to See.” So [per Democracy Now], at least some Republicans would prefer to not be linked to the Kochs. And those would certainly not want a film evidencing the Kochs’ influence (and naming politicians who are being ‘influenced’) to come out. Congressperson Candice Miller (Republican Representative from Michigan) tried to block an unveiling event for the documentary at the U.S. Capitol, claiming it could violate House rules (being debuted at taxpayer-funded facilities) and “cross the line into partisan politics.”
The documentary shows how the Koch brothers have used their vast fortunes to oppose government programs such as Medicaid, Medicare and Social Security, as well as obstruct efforts to raise the minimum wage, tackle climate change and expand voting rights. Democracy Now talks to the film’s director, Robert Greenwald, founder and president of Brave New Films, in its writeup (linked below). The full original release is embedded above.
Deep. Check it out. And considering that the film, and Democracy Now, are fighting the rich and powerful to bring real issues and news to light… maybe consider donating to the cause and/or getting some friends together to watch, discuss, and empower yourselves.

Opinion: Accused Of Being Racist? The NAACP Can Help. Bring Your Checkbook Though (Like Donald Sterling Did)
Y’all, Businessweek is some good reading. I get tons of info from just skimming, and when I want more I read more closely. Case in point: The writeup the mag did on the recent ‘quick public relations makeovers’ the NAACP appears to be helping out otherwise hated entities with.
Help The NAACP Help You…Like Donald Sterling Did! Now that’d be a winner of a tagline, right?
And maybe not that far from the truth. The NAACP was happy to recognize Sterling as a ‘sterling’ supporter (yup), until he got in too much trouble. Now, I am not saying the NAACP (National Association for the Advancement of Colored People) cancelled its second award ceremony for embattled (read: racially challenged) NBA Clippers’ owner Donald Sterling because they got caught with their hands in the cookie jar… But Donald, and the mega-rich that donate to the cause as he does… have some nearly irresistible cookies. Cause-driven organizations like the NAACP have always had to balance responsibilities regarding ethics and image while keeping the funding coffers full. The NAACP, therefore, can ill-afford to turn down too many quarter-million-dollar (or way more) donations… even from the likes of Sterling… even when folks had been calling him out as ‘less than appreciative’ of Black folk long before ex-girlfriend V. Stiviano bugged him while actually bugging (e.g. recording his racially insensitive remarks) him.
Hey, his views are his own business, right? Can’t let that influence fundraising, right? Ignore it, NAACP. Your reputation will probably be okay. Money is money. Sterling’s. Wal-Mart’s. Bank Of America’s. FedEx’s… Yeah, pretty much anyone at-risk or already entangled in discrimination-related litigation… can drop some (big) see-what-I-do-for-the-Blacks dollars off to the NAACP. Such investments donations go pretty far in helping clean up even the dirtiest situations and reputations (oops… I mean… go far in helping … um … you know … folks the NAACP helps and stuff).
Interesting. Check out the Businessweek article like I did; and just imagine if former Governor Mitt Romney’s people would have had him drop some money here and there with the NAACP before his whole 47% comments got out and put some of the final nails in his presidential campaign’s coffin.

VICE: Corruption, Cocaine, & Murder in Trinidad (Video)
VICE News visited the slums of Port of Spain and spoke with police, activists, community leaders, and gangsters to understand the country’s decade-plus spike in killings [more than tripling over the past 15 years]. Many of the murders are attributed to ruthless and politically connected street gangs who control territories that are sometimes no larger than a city block. The gangs fight over lucrative government contracts meant to provide social services and combat unemployment.
But gang violence is just where the problems start. Trinidad has become an important stop for drugs headed to West Africa and the United States. The “big fish” keeping and growing the country into a mega narco-state — the political and business elite.
Shots Fired: Rush Limbaugh Disses #BringBackOurGirls And Jon Stewart Slams Him For It (Video)
President Goodluck Jonathan of Nigeria, pressured into action by ‘hashtag activism’ on Twitter recently, now has help from several nations to save more than 200 schoolgirls held hostage by Boko Haram terrorists. #BringBackOurGirls our girls has been trending worldwide, bringing and maintaining attention on the issue. Good, right? I mean, the terrorists are the bad guys; but you MUST be a genuine azzjack of a bad guy to hate on the movement, right?
Enter Rush Limbaugh, azzjack. On his radio show, the conservative host ripped the effort, even calling a photo of First Lady Michelle Obama with a #BringBackOurGirls sign “pathetic.”
Oh…my…damn! Did Limbaugh just slam a humanitarian movement AND diss our beloved First Lady? Sure did. But don’t worry. Jon Stewart got him; as you’ll see in the Comedy Central ‘Daily Show’ clip above. In fact, by the show’s end, Stewart had set off a Twitter trend of his own – a message for Limbaugh: #F*@KYOURUSH.
(Even more important, Jon had some heartfelt words for the real G’s caught up in this horror story; the captive Nigerian girls who knowingly risked life and everything daily to get educated and empowered.)

Bill Maher: “Donald Sterling Isn’t Worth Defending, But The 4th Amendment Is.” (Video)
Bill Maher is right, to an extent, about protection of the 4th Amendment in his recent commentary regarding former NBA owner Donald Sterling’s case, but the point is everyone is still accountable for what they say. It doesn’t matter what was said in private because in America you can be convicted of crimes & incarcerated for things that were said in private. Even television news investigations secretly record & release evidence of people saying things that were meant to be in private. I agree with most of what Bill Maher is saying in his commentary but you can’t even get a job for saying outrageous things that some people would disagree with. So it’s best to keep things 100 all the time about how you feel. It’s America & you do have a right to say what you feel even in private, but in Donald Sterling’s case the NBA is a business & once those private feelings were out in the open no black players would be willing to play for a NOW known racist.
Jeremiah Camara Says ‘Blacks Screwed Up’ In Handling The Controversy Surrounding Former NBA Owner Donald Sterling (Video)
“As usual, Blacks were left with nothing but a moral victory…Donald Sterling was never the problem in the first place.”
After banning Donald Sterling from the NBA for life, there was much celebrating, specifically amongst African Americans, but in reality what was actually accomplished? As usual, Blacks were left with nothing but a moral “victory.†Black leadership, in an outside of the NBA blew perhaps the greatest opportunity to advance the conditions of African Americans since the so-called Civil Rights Movement.
VICE: The Devil Tried To Divide Us (Documentary)
There are REASONS we have rules for wars… that nations declare war, seek coalitions before they do, and convene war crimes courts after. The ongoing tragedy in the Central African Republic though… Damn. There have been no rules, no understandings, and countless crimes against humanity… for DECADES… and it has just gotten worse! VICE News is taking us there. They have to, so we can try to understand. Watch above.

Permanently Temporary: The Truth About Temp Labor (Documentary)
President Obama is on board with BIG retailers like Amazon, driving economic renewal AND employing more and more people with American jobs that cannot be outsourced.
Yay… right? No.
Temp labor is one of the fastest growing industries in the US. Increasingly, temp workers are part of a business strategy to keep costs down and profits high.
From mega-retailers to mom-and-pop shops, temps are hired to do some of the hardest and most dangerous jobs. While more and more of the American workforce is composed of temporary workers, they’re largely hidden from public view. Many of these workers stay silent, often having their livelihoods threatened if they speak out.
But that’s what VICE is best at doing: shedding light on shameful practices and telling the stories of people for whom it would be too dangerous to tell themselves. Damn shame that the largest corporations, time and again, ride the road to success on the backs of laborers with no regard to their interests or even their well-being… at all. Watch the documentary above. Learn.
VICE: Jamaican Herb Business (Video)
Hold the phone. Marjuana is still illegal in Jamaica.
That may well change though, as Western powers pressured the island nation to tamp down production and export of its cultural crop are now reconsidering their stances on ganja en masse. At the forefront of stirring change for the country: Jamaica’s first medicinal marijuana company, Medicanja, launched this year against a backdrop of reinvigorated debate around ganja law reform among leading policymakers. Renowned Jamaican scientist Dr. Henry Lowe, a leader in THC studies for medical purposes, is running the company, with the University of West Indies and the University of Technology jointly funding the facility. Dr. Lowe says the company will be studying the scientific benefits of marijuana and producing CBD-based medical products, which fall under legally accepted medicinal use of the ganja plant. Lowe says the plant extract can be used to treat psychosis and severe pain, as well as mid-life crises in men.
Swaziland: Gold Mine Of Marijuana (Video)
Smokers are gonna get high on the greenery scenery to start in the video above, but stick around and take in the economic reality that drives grandmas and other good people into this business. It stinks (and not in the good way). People are just making a living the only way they can, by farming the only tax-exempt produce in Swaziland. That ‘tax exempt’ part is a huge loophole favoring growers in the sub-Saharan monarchy’s economy. Everything else is taxed to hell in a land where 2/3 of the population lives below the poverty line. So Swazi weed is not just a means of escape from the day’s humdrum or from the ails of the AIDS epidemic gripping the populace; but probably the only way to any level of prosperity for the citizenry.
Swaziland is a landlocked country sandwiched between South Africa and Mozambique. Despite Swaziland’s small size, it boasts more hectares of land dedicated to growing Cannabis than all of India. It is also home to Swazi Gold, the legendary sativa strain.
Hamilton Morris travels to Swaziland hoping to chemically analyze the cannabinoids present in some of the local strains. Instead, he finds a country steeped in political corruption and economic turmoil. Cannabis is viewed by many growers, users, and politicians as a drug that will cause insanity, but it may be Swaziland’s only hope for economic stability.
