Live. Lyricism. Lupe. Under the bridge. On these streets, where it matters. Unexpected but not uncharacteristic. Fiasco is only a ‘disaster’ to wack rappers’ careers. The rest of us in the real Hip-Hop Nation… we fux with dude heavy! Stuff like this is why.
For his live performance of “Mural Jr.†we took him underneath NYC’s Williamsburg Bridge for a shoot that nods to the ‘Drogas Wave’ theme. There’s a clear view of the East River waters next to the downtown Manhattan walkway ‘Lu prowled while rhyming a cappella. His inspired take on the track (the sequel to the ‘Tetsuo & Youth’ original, “Muralâ€) gains extra emotional clout by insightfully incorporating the local landscape. Hold up!

When Tuxedo arrived at NPR and Mayer Hawthorne spied a small ‘Ho!’ button sitting on Bob Boilen’s desk, he immediately beamed. “We use a big ‘Ho!’ button on tour,” he said. They didn’t bring a drummer, opting for a boombox — yes, a real boombox playing a real cassette tape, kids — and it was nostalgic delight from the start of the cassette’s hiss. The band was tight as ever, while their ace in the hole, Gavin Turek provided dance moves and the sweetest harmonies. Tuxedo set things off with a fan favorite from their first album, along with two [more] before closing it out with a red light special. It’s one thing to go against the grain for the sake of it — and another completely make it good. In this Tiny Desk concert, Tuxedo accomplished both.

Wow! Young Devyn has been in the game since BEFORE becoming the 16-year-old phenom we’ve come to respect and check for. Seems crazy to say that an early teen has YEARS in the game, but then I think about the Golden Era (Da Youngstas, Shyheim The Rugged Child, all the way up through Buckshot Shorty and way more) and YEP! That’s how it was, and that’s how it is in real Hip-Hop.
Or, at least, how it is SUPPOSED to be. Stop with the mumblin’ young’ns… Get your BARZ up! Like Young Devyn.
