!llmind – “Narcotic Nautilus”
One of my favorite producers in recent years & the creator of the ‘Boom Trap’ sound, !llmind, drops a dope ass instrumental gem that samples the Bob James jazz classic ‘Nautilus’. Check the track & peep what the ‘ill’ producer had to say about this beat below…..
“This was one of the 1st “BoomTrap” beats I’ve ever made (created almost 3 years ago).
Since then, it’s gone through many transitions, different song ideas with a handful of different artists. The only other person who has this beat is my homie Just Blaze. You may or may not remember him playing this beat for Blackthought to freestyle over, on the Combat Jack Show last year.
I wanted to finally put this beat out, in its rawest form, for the masses to hear.
Why? Because, f*ck it.
Let’s keep this in the streets of NYC.” – !llmind
Tall Black Guy – “Sade’s Taboo” (Sweetest Taboo Blap-Up)
Detroit producer ‘Tall Black Guy’ always has some dope ass remixes & original compositions that we continue to support on the radio show & also on the website here. Check out this smooth & jazzy rework of the beautiful Sade’s timeless classic song ‘Sweetest Taboo’ that only Sir Tall Black Guy could do. You can download the joint too for free too!
“As a thank you to my fans, I thought that it would be a good time to put up a track that a few have been asking for. Good things come to those who wait! Enjoy” – Tall Black Guy
Ekundayo feat. Boog Brown – “Everything” (Prod. By Illastrate)
Atlanta based lyricist Ekundayo links up with female emcee Boog Brown for this special collaboration called ‘Everything’. The jazzy track produced by the talented beatsmith Illastrate is inspired by the work of photographer Roni Nicole & serves as an answer to the, at times rhetorical, question ‘What Is Love?’. The answer for anyone who knows better & everyone involved with this project is…. ‘Everything.’

PBS’ Blank On Blank: Interview With Louis “Satchmo” Armstrong (Video)
Okay, so we’re hooked on PBS’ Blank on Blank series. Great animation built up around a 1964 radio interview with legendary jazz trumpeter/vocalist Louis “Satchmo” Armstrong. Interviewed by Michael Aisner and James R. Stein. Originally aired on WNTH (Winnetka, Illinois).
“You’ve got to be good or as bad as the devil. … Even if we had two, three days off I still had to blow that horn a few hours to keep up the chops.”
– Louis Armstrong

Robert Glasper feat. Jill Scott – “Calls” (Video)
Robert Glasper’s new single featuring Jill Scott entitled ‘Calls’ is one of my favorite new R&B/Soul joints over the past month or so. It’s not uncommon for me to replay a great song over & over again after hearing it for the very first time. Robert Glasper & Jill Scott’s collaborative piece would be no exception to that process of mine. The single will appear on Robert Glasper’s upcoming project “Black Radio 2” featuring many artists such as Dwele, Faith Evans, Common, Norah Jones, Snoop Dogg, & more due October 29th on Blue Note Records. You can pre-order the album below, but for now check out the almost dream-like yet creative new video for ‘Calls’ above….

Twenty Feet From Stardom (Trailer)
“When you’re a background singer, it is a springboard. But it can easily become quicksand if that’s not what you want to do.”
Talk about ‘unsung’… Darlene Love, Merry Clayton, Claudia Lennear, Lisa Fischer, and Judith Hill sang some of the greatest songs of our time… in the background! “Twenty Feet From Stardom” spotlights the untold true story of the backup singers behind some of the greatest musical legends of the 20th and 21st centuries. Included: archival footage and intimate interviews with Bruce Springsteen, Stevie Wonder, Mick Jagger and Sting. Here’s the trailer. Shout out to my folks at Bad Magics for the scoop.

R&B: Estelle – “Be In Love” feat. Jeremih
As a fan of reggae/dancehall & dub music I can really appreciate when good singers get together over this type of island breezy production. British singer Estelle enlists fellow R&B singer Jeremih to get down with her on this “Be In Love” track from her upcoming “Love & Happiness: Vol. 2 Waiting To Exhale” EP that will be released on her own label imprint New London Records. I’m feeling the latest push by a number of true R&B/Soul singers taking chances with more island style production in their music.

Hiatus Kaiyote – “Nakamarra” feat. Q-Tip
Already a worthy track, putting Australian group Hiatus Kaiyote on the map last year, Q-Tip (of A Tribe Called Quest fame) drops lyrics on an alternate version of the cut. Tip doing his “People’s Instinctive Travels” throwback flow on this one is nice. Relax to this.
