Thai Prison Fights (Documentary)

If you want to claim ‘baddest man on the planet’ (e.g. what they called Iron Mike Tyson in his prime)… and you are in the knuckle-up game in Bangkok, Thailand… then Klong Prem high-security prison is as good as Madison Square Garden. Sorta. Well, the inmates there box outsiders; and they fight hard for what’s really on the line – money, shorter sentences, glory, to settle arguments. Watch the VICE mini-documentary on it above. Let’s get it on!

Black Woman Disrespects A Black Man & White Girlfriend in Harlem Barbershop. What Would YOU Do? (Video)

I enjoy these ‘candid camera-type’ of social experiments that ABC News reporter John Quinones does in his “What Would You Do?” series that usually airs on Friday nights.   This episode is particularly interesting as they head to a Harlem barbershop with a large black clientele.  Things get interesting when a black female disrespects a black man & his white girlfriend.  Personally I’ve dated every race there is & wouldn’t tolerate anyone disrespecting my girlfriend or wife no matter what her race is. In fact, many of my family members are also involved in interracial relationships which reflects how much America as a whole is changing.  Many great points were made in this video by the people who stood up including the brother in the video who made a excellent point that interracial relationships are not destroying the black community. It’s drugs & poverty, but we can’t combat that with our own ignorance, hatred, & bigotry. African-Americans should know better than anyone else not to discriminate on anyone as much as we have been for many years. There’s so many great quotes in this segment it’s amazing. Ultimately, the most important thing about ANY relationship is “LOVE”.

‘Barbershop’ In Real Life: Brother Says To White Barber, “Nah Man” (Video)

We enjoy John Quinones’ segments on ABCNews called ‘What Would You Do?’ but this particular segment I don’t find to be racist at all.  It’s a little more nuanced than black customers simply refusing to get a haircut from a white barber. Some brothas have a tough time allowing a female barber to cut their hair as well for one simple reason. They don’t know them OR their work. Most brothas have a tough time giving a new barber a chance to cut their hair no matter what the gender, orientation, or race of the individual.  Usually it takes time for anyone to get to see someone’s work & develop a relationship with them before you begin to trust someone with your hair.  Especially if some haircuts are ‘Non-Refundable’ if the work performed was terrible.  Personally one of my barbers for a time was a white guy who still cuts hair in a barbershop with a mostly black customer base.   I was referred to him by a friend I trusted when my normal barber was out of town.  Needless to say I still go back to him on occasion.   There’s some guys who refuse to allow a woman to cut their hair if they don’t know how good they are at their craft.  Now does it matter to anyone in THIS barbershop the race or gender of the barber? Just check out this segment of ‘What Would You Do?”.  It’s a little more nuanced in not thoroughly knowing the the work of the individual who’s going to give you that haircut more than racist in my opinion.

Sure the White barber in Ice Cube’s hit comedy “Barbershop” got respect eventually but it took time to develop that relationship & trust.

Ferrari Prank Proves That Women Only Care About Money (Video)

Hahahaaaaaaa! That last … ummm … girl (yellow tank top)… was P*SSED! Wasn’t even gonna give dude the time of day, huh? Until she saw his candy red Ferrari. Then she had the nerve to get mad when he tells her she is actually not going for a ride in it. Tsk, tsk, tsk… At least this way she wouldn’t have to ‘ride with a stranger’ right?

We went out with a 2013 Red Ferrari Italia 458 to go on a social experiment and see if it can pick up ladies no matter how you look and this is how it went.:)

The Difference Between The Haves And The Have-Nots? Cal-Berkley Study Says… Morality (Video)

See? This is why money cannot buy happiness… because those who have money never feel they have enough OF ANYTHING. Astonishing clip above. PBS coverage of a research study that concludes that folks in high-end vehicles are in such a rush they’d nearly run a guy down in a crosswalk (when those worse off probably have more motivation to ‘not be late’ to wherever they are going)… that given opportunity, well-to-do study participants (more often than poorer participants) would take candy from kids… lie about test results reported via ‘honor system’… I mean, wow.

In a series of startling studies, psychologists at the University of California at Berkeley have found that “upper-class individuals behave more unethically than lower-class individuals.” Ongoing research is trying to find out what it is about wealth — or lack of it — that makes people behave they way they do.

Israel’s New Racism: The Persecution of African Migrants in the Holy Land (Video)

Racist? Well… um… noooo. Of course not. It’s just a “delicate situation”… just don’t want to lose our country to them… That’s basically what Israeli right-wingers are saying. Why does racist rhetoric always sound the same? Great investigative reporting by The Nation.

‘About 60,000 African migrants have arrived in Israel since 2006, fleeing unrest in their home countries. But upon arrival in the ostensibly democratic country, the migrants have faced intense persecution and have been branded as “infiltrators” by right-wing politicians and activists.’

– The Nation

And shout out to Mr. Davey D over at The Daily Beast for bringing this shameful aspect of Israeli life into clear view on our scope. We’re aware now. Best believe…

“[W]e have Israel which is supposed to be a beacon for Democracy in the Middle East demonstrating venom and hatred on par with any KKK and Neo-Nazi group.”

Politics: Saudi Artist & Activist ‘Hisham Fageeh’ Channels Bob Marley With His Viral Internet Hit “No Woman, No Drive” (Video)

Interesting. To be certain, this women’s rights issue-driven video could have been delivered with a more serious tone; but 26-year-old Saudi comedian/activist Hisham Fageeh likely ‘toned down’ his Bob Marley-inspired song “No Woman, No Drive” – as to be too fiery would put the performer, and any involved with the vid’s production/distribution, under fire.

A couple of months [after the “No Woman, No Drive” song was created], Twitter was abuzz with talk that Saudi Arabian women would defy the ban on driving by mounting a demonstration on October 26, Fageeh and his two friends, Saudi musicians Fahad Albutairi and Alaa Wardi, decided to produce a video to coincide with the day of protest.

– The Daily Beast

I like that this points out injustice, then pokes a stick at it… in sort of a fun way, but even that is done with substantial socio-political risk. On another note, Fageeh’s pretty good for someone who “doesn’t really listen to music.” Dude definitely getting his Bobby McFerrin on (e.g. with the ‘body music’ with a message). Wonder if there will be any ‘response videos’ from pro-conservatives of Saudi?

While the Saudi government officials issued harsh warnings to political dissenters or anyone supporting female drivers, there have been no reported arrests or fines, and the young comedian says he’s not afraid in the least. So far, he tells The Daily Beast, he’s gotten “nothing but love” in response to the video, from everyone from Saudi grandmothers to New York hipsters. “It resonated with people,” he says. “It was relevant to them.”

Elementary Genocide (Documentary Trailer)

“They’ve done studies…If you are illiterate in 3rd or 4th grade, then it’s very likely you will be in prison… You mean to tell me that people who decided on where to build a prison, how to build a prison, or when to build a prison didn’t look at the research? They had to look at something…of course!”

Supreme Understanding, Author/Activist

Executive produced by award winning journalist/filmmaker Rahiem Shabazz, “Elementary Genocide” addresses how the federal government allots money to each state to build prions based on the failure rate of 4th and 5th graders! In America, half of all 4th graders read below grade level, and more Black men are going to jail than are going to college. Compelling content, including interviews and voice-over narration from professors, teachers, best selling authors, celebrities, and more.

David George aka ‘The Bug Chef’: The Eat-A-Bug Cookbook (Video)

David George Gordon – known the world over as the ‘Bug Chef’ came to Seattle (Washington, USA) to promote “The Eat-A-Bug Cookbook” and to cook up some delicious creepy-crawlers… spiders. scorpions, you know… delicacies.

WHAT??? I know… Blech!!

Nah, for real. The cookbook features “33 ways to cook grasshoppers, ants, water bugs, spiders, centipedes, and their kin.” And as you will see in the clip above, he makes little attempt to ‘mask the natural bug flavor’ of his dishes. A dash of spice, a quick steam over lemon juice, and viola! Grub… yeah, he probably has a grub worm recipe or three, too.

“Of all the different dishes I make, I think the tarantula is actually the tastiest.”

Politics: Former VP Al Gore Is Worried. The Survival Of Civilization Is At Risk (Video)

When asked, “What does the world look like in 100 years?” Former U.S. Vice President Al Gore declares:

The answer is in our hands….Our democracy has been hacked…Big Money has now perverted our democracy… to serve the purposes of special interests… Internet-based, democratic forms of communication can re-empower individuals to make their voices heard in numbers that can outweigh the special interests and lobbyists…It’s important to change light bulbs, but it’s way more important to change laws…What’s at risk is truly the survival of civilization…literally, that is the case.

VICE: Racism At The University Of Alabama – Problem NOT Solved (Video)

It’s a shame that there are some societal ills, like racism, that we cannot seem to move beyond… even in this, the 21st century. Admittedly, The University of Alabama has much to be proud of – certainly its back-to-back NCAA football championships tops among them. But just as we had observed how far UA has come since its campus’ integration (see the R.I.P. James Hood post here), racism at The Capstone is exposed once again.

“In 1963, in the midst of the heated debate over the desegregation of American schools, The University of Alabama announced that it would for the first time allow African Americans to enroll. Fifty years later, in September 2013, two University of Alabama sororities rejected an African American student because of her race. As a result, an anti-racist student group called the Mallet Assembly and other members of the community took action to prevent segregation within the university’s Greek system.”

– VICE

So sad. An embarrassment on so many levels: A majority of UA students have likely moved on from notions in step with its segregated past; but a significant number of students (and more important, institutions and organizations they join) have not. UA sororities, students and alumni, all should find it harder to yell “Roll Tide” with pride. And if the shame was limited to the embarrassing actions of two sororities who wanted to stay ‘lily white’… that would be enough. BUT… as you see in the documentary short above, racial insensitivity is still very much a reality woven into the fabric of campus life at UA.

Damn… they’re still trying to keep black folk out of the swimming pool. Shameful. You MUST watch. Kudos to The Mallet Assembly and to VICE for bringing this to the forefront.

VICE: Ground Zero – Mali (Video)

This is the story of the Battle for Gao, the biggest city in Northern Mali. The French used to rule the region. They left. Militant extremist factions like Al Qaeda moved in… banned music and booze and basically anything they call “sin” and instituted HARSH punishments for violators and martial law. It’s Jihad on steroids on steroids. It’s just wrong. The Malian-French alliance forces are trying to stop this; but can they? VICE went over to give us an up close look… and some answers.

It’s basically the first legitimate combat footage to come out of the war there…[I]nsurgents came to us: they slipped into Gao overnight on small boats and used suicide bombers to blast their way into government buildings. The French left the fighting to the Malian army for most of the day as a test of their combat abilities. Malian soldiers, while very brave, are almost completely untrained and had great difficulty fighting less than a dozen jihadists, some of whom were children. They fired wild bursts of automatic fire everywhere, destroying the city center. The Malians soon ran out of ammunition and had to wait for the French to show up and save the day.

Employee Calls Out McDonald’s President On Poverty Wages (Video)

YEAH! McDonald’s worker Nancy Salgado got ’em so shook they called the cops! Damn shame it has to come to this though.

Great story from NPR’s website. Watch the embedded clip that has gone viral this week, with the help of Fight For 15 – a fast-food workers’ campaign aimed at raising hourly wages to $15. Salgado shouts to Jeff Stratton, president of McDonald’s USA, who was standing at a podium in a ballroom giving a talk:

“It’s really hard for me to feed my two kids and struggle day to day. Do you think this is fair, that I have to be making $8.25 when I have worked for McDonald’s for 10 years?”

Stratton’s response:

“I’ve been there 40 years.”

Wow.

VICE: Black Bike Week (Video)

“We call it Black Bike Week. Whether you’re Black, White, Asian, Chinese, or Japanese, we don’t give a f**k! We ridin’!”

VICE covers the annual Black Bike Week in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, over Memorial Day weekend. Half a million Black (mostly) bikers and event go-ers gather for several days of riding and partying… and traffic-stopping flossing and bike stunts up and down the seafront strip.

And…

‘Hordes of women—known as “huggers”—also flock to Myrtle Beach for the event, hoping to be picked up for a ride, and maybe something more. A girl will often perform the “pillion clapping” move as a passenger—essentially twerking on the back of the bike. Unfortunately, the combination of partying and biking without a helmet isn’t an especially safe one, and every year there are people who don’t make it home. The event also attracts a ton of prostitutes, but more and more women are starting to ride their own bikes and each year an increasing number of female biker gangs show up for the party.’

– VICE

Sigh… if there was a seedy side to this week of debauchery, you know VICE would expose it. Let’s watch and learn… about that ‘clapping’ thing, too.

Former Angola Prisoner Herman Wallace, Denied A Fair Trial For 41 Years, Dies Just 3 Days After Being Freed (Audio)

herman-wallace_17475943

Herman Wallace spent the 41 years of his life in solitary confinement in Louisiana State Penitentiary (aka Angola).

A free man, Wallace died of liver cancer, three days after gaining his freedom. He was 71 years old.

“While already serving a 50-year sentence for armed robbery, Wallace was convicted of the murder of a prison guard in 1974, along with Robert King and Albert Woodfox. The men became known as the ‘Angola 3’ for spending most of their years in solitary confinement… All of them claimed to be innocent.

On Tuesday a judge overturned Wallace’s conviction on the grounds that he had been denied a fair trial because he was indicted by a grand jury comprised solely of men — in violation of the equal protection clause of the 14th Amendment.

Wallace spent the first 18 years behind bars without an appeal. The argument that finally won Wallace his release was one he had been making for decades, mostly acting as his own attorney.”

It didn’t take new legislation, new science or DNA (as was the case for freed Angola prisoner Henry James)… It just took work, reconsideration, and FORTY F**KING YEARS for a judge to do the right thing.

“It’s tragic it took 40 years for him to find a court that would say, ‘You’re right, Mr. Wallace, that violated your Constitutional rights; you are entitled to a new trial.'”

– Attorney George Kendall, one of Wallace’s advocates

This is sad, folks. Of course, we are talking about the wasted years of a man now at rest; but we are also talking about the denial of rights and protections that we are ALL supposed to be afforded in America. God be with you are denied due process in a time of legal trouble. Because if you are convicted, it might take half your life to get that ‘judiciary oversight’ even looked at by a judge!

I… I don’t have the words, but NPR’s ‘All Things Considered’ does.
