The Lone Buddhist Monk Who Stood Against The Communists And Saved His Temple (Video)

One man can make a difference. Full disclosure: There is no fist fighting in this docu-vignette. This monk fought Communist aggression against his temple in a different way, but he definitely stood his ground.

Very few of Mongolia’s Buddhist temples survived the Soviet era. But one particular temple in Erdenetsogt still stands thanks to the efforts of one monk, who risked a long prison sentence to save it.

Classic Beauty: Defined By Each Culture (Video)

We have known all along that ‘beauty is in the eye of the beholder.’ But consider that our judgments about whom is beautiful is based in the beholder’s ethnicity.

Photographer and photojournalist Natalia Ivanova has begun an ambitious project she calls “The Ethnic Origins of Beauty,” or Les origines de la beauté. She seeks out the ideal natural beauty that symbolizes every ethnicity, and photographs them in an identical position. The 100s of photos she has taken show the wide diversity that humans consider to be the classic beauty.

So this project pretty much makes it plain: What I (and people with whom I share ethnic background) have a different point of view when it comes to judging beauty. The Eye Candy posted here might be drastically different if someone from another culture starts selecting the Honeyz. How about that.

How Can You Tell If Someone Is Lying? (Video)

Okay. This is FASCINATING! Being able to divine the truth, or at least determine when someone is lying is the stuff of great spy stories, war movies, epic action-dramas, even sci-fi/superhero blockbusters… Captain America and the Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. could have certainly used a lot more of lie spotting early on in “The Winter Soldier” right?

(By the way, if you haven’t already, you reeeeally should check out the BEST MARVEL UNIVERSE FILM TO DATE – “Captain America: The Winter Soldier.”)

Deception can destroy confidence. Pamela Myer, the author of “Liespotting: Proven Techniques to Detect Deception” and one of the most popular Ted Talks of all time, has made a career developing interview techniques and identifying verbal and non-verbal cues a person trying to lie to you might exhibit.

But let’s bring this skill back down to Earth. Consider how your parents (or you readers who are parents) utilize lie spotting day-to-day. How does a mom know when her child is lying about where she was this afternoon? How does pops already know about those scratches on the car door did NOT just ‘happen at the supermarket’? Or let’s get real-life: How can an investigator know if a person of interest is telling the truth or not… or how might a spy counter lie spotting techniques?

Or to get really real… How will you determine whether the candidates are answering truthfully during the U.S. Presidential Debate?

(Tonight at 9PM EST. I’ll be watching on PBS – available on TV or online here.)

Watch Sunday’s NYC #GoTopless Parade 2016 (Video)

You know how folks say, “It is what it is.” Here it, well, they are what it is all about. Naked breasts… all the way down to the nipple… all throughout the streets of Manhattan, New York, and [actually] various other places in the U.S.A. It is a peaceful protest for women’s rights to not be criminalized if they choose to go topless. Currently, men can; and it is no big thing (no big law against it).

On August 28, 2016, the women’s rights organization GoTopless held Go Topless Pride Parades and other events in New York, Los Angeles and over 60 other cities worldwide for the 9th annual GoTopless Day.

Surprising thing you will realize moments after watching: It’s just another parade… not even a protest. They’re boobs; women’s and men’s. Some folks are even pushing strollers. Perhaps, the biggest thing to gawk at is how this whole event is a relative non-event… perhaps, as it should be.

(Of course, I have NO problem admitting that I clicked to see some big ole breasteses… but that’s just me, I’m sure.)

Sure, everyone knows of the hacktivists glamorized in the media for taking on ‘the powers that be’ all Matrix style. Cuba’s Skate Culture (Trailer)

When you look at the parallels between cultures, you learn more about yours as well as theirs. Cuba’s burgeoning skate culture came about as the poor people there becoming practioners, doing their thing in the park, with other people there loving and nurturing something of their own right where it is happening, and the outside world recognizing its beauty and coming to partake. Sounds like Hip-Hop’s beginnings, right? Cuba skate culture is evolving in a way we recognize. Salute! They did not ‘invent’ skating per se, but this is their own flavor. Get a taste of Cuba’s skate scene with the trailer above from VICE SPORTS.

Cuba’s skate scene has no funding, very few resources and not much to speak of in terms of a skate park. But despite those obstacles scene is growing, thanks in part to organizations like Cuba Skate and the kids that want to see it furthered. We travelled with Ishod Wair, Lucien Clarke, Andrew Reynolds and special guest photographer Arto Saari to see the best skate spots that the country has to offer and take note of a vibrant underground skate scene on the verge of change.

Talk about making it rain for the environment. In a way, I guess this is using money to ensure we have the best soil for the best crops for people to consume. Watch how the U.S. takes dirty money (e.g. ‘spent currency’) and shreds and composts it to enrich gardening/farming soil.

Build And Destroy: A Short History Of The Development Of The U.S. Highway System (Mini-Documentary)

A steady diet of VICE and Vox in your online reading and viewing can do real wonders for your perspective. Facts. Probably why we share their insights so often here. Check this short doc telling a different story behind the story of the development of the U.S. highway system. Sure you have to destroy to rebuild – a roadway to connect major cities, that allow fast traversal of the country in times of crisis – but we wouldn’t destroy neighborhoods to do it… not longstanding vibrant Black communities while preserving privileged White ones… on purpose… would we?

Yeah? Watch.

Maybe even check out Wikipedia to jumpstart a subsequent learning journey on highways. Key word parts: start and journey. DON’T let a quick Wiki run be the end of it. And make sure YOU drive your discovery!

State of Surveillance (Documentary)

Damn. Privacy is an illusion. That’s not the future; that’s NOW. If anyone would know, it’s former NSA’er, current whistleblower in exile, Edward Snowden. And if anyone can get at the core of the story, it’s VICE.

When NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden leaked details of massive government surveillance programs in 2013, he ignited a raging debate over digital privacy and security. That debate came to a head this year, when Apple refused an FBI court order to access the iPhone of alleged San Bernardino Terrorist Syed Farook. Meanwhile, journalists and activists are under increasing attack from foreign agents. To find out the government’s real capabilities, and whether any of us can truly protect our sensitive information, VICE founder Shane Smith heads to Moscow to meet the man who started the conversation, Edward Snowden.

The DNA Journey: Where Are You Really ‘From’ (Video)

The one comment by the lady near the end – how DNA testing could force folks to understand that there is no pure race – is so compelling. No ‘pure’ race, no ‘superior’ race… no more motivation for the conflicts based on such dumbness worldwide. A peaceful world, far more related than we would have known otherwise; like we are all ‘cousins.’ Incredible viewing!

To celebrate diversity in the world Momondo presents The DNA Journey: a journey into who we are and how we are all connected as a global family. We asked 67 people from all over the world to take a DNA test, and it turns out they have much more in common with other nationalities than they would ever have thought.

Going Offline: Reconnect And Enjoy Each Other Some Time (Video)

Disconnect from the ‘webs and reconnect (and enjoy) your partner. This video went with the sex angle (heh-heh…sex…angles…okay, I am a perv, so what of it). But it makes a great point that has been made before. Sometimes, maybe we are too connected. So what if the restaurant you and sweetie want to go to for date night doesn’t have Wi-Fi. So what if that ‘day-cation’ spot y’all want to hit for some quality time has poor reception. SO WHAT! The ‘Net is great for keeping us connected when we would otherwise be apart; but when we are with our loved ones, let’s be present.

You feel me?
